Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Ankles First
Feet, ankles and calves come alive first, then we build the tall carriage the style rests on — a long straight back, easy shoulders, arms kept still at your sides.
Learn to Travel
The soft-shoe basics — skips, hops, rises — repeated slowly over a live-sounding reel. Each one is a small building block; line a few up and you are already dancing a phrase.
Stack a Figure
We assemble the blocks into a whole figure, adding a section on each run-through. Your legs learn the route by repetition, and the music is in no hurry to lose you.
First Taste of Hard Shoe
Your first go at making noise — drumming out heel-and-toe rhythms in your normal trainers. Doing it soft-shod first means the timing is already there when the real hard shoes eventually arrive.
Up to Speed, Then Stretch
We take the full figure to full tempo with the tune turned up, then cool down with a long, honest stretch for the calves and ankles you have just worked hard.
About Irish Dance Classes in Bradford
You do not need a scrap of Irish ancestry for this — the dance travelled the world long ago, and Bradford of all places knows about arrivals: the mills that made it "Worstedopolis" once pulled in workers from across Ireland and beyond. Our Irish dance classes in Bradford go after the craft under the spectacle: the gliding soft-shoe reels and jigs, and the hard-shoe steps that hammer rhythm straight out through the soles.
This is the craft, not the arena spectacle. If it is the percussion and the footwork pulling you in — heritage or none — you are exactly who these sessions are for. We run from partner studios in Little Germany, the intact Victorian warehouse quarter just east of the centre, and out at Shipley and Saltaire, named the moment you book. There is no tram or metro here, so it is the two central stations and a compact town centre on foot.
The adult class holds a real range of ages side by side; teens and children have their own DBS-supervised bands; and one session is £8 with nothing to join. Turn up in normal trainers or thick, grippy socks — that covers the early weeks. The hard shoes are a purchase for much further down the road, and we will never push you into a pair before you are ready.

Why Choose Irish Dance in Bradford?
No Heritage Required
Irish surnames optional. The dance belongs to anyone willing to learn it, and most of our room arrived with no connection to Ireland at all.
Rhythm You Can Hear
Hard-shoe work makes your feet the loudest instrument in the room — the closest thing to being a drummer without ever touching a kit.
Juniors and Teens Too
Younger dancers train in age-grouped classes with DBS-checked teachers — Irish dance is a brilliant one for building coordination early.
Easy to Start Solo
No partner needed and no kit to buy on day one — flat trainers or grippy socks get you clean through the first month.
Your Irish Dance Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Posture and Skips
Getting Started
The carriage, the soft-shoe basics and a first short reel. Rhythm and confidence come before neat lines.
What to Wear
Something you can move in and flat trainers or thick grippy socks. Nothing to buy yet.
Reels and Jigs
Soft-Shoe Steps
Longer figures in the smooth soft-shoe styles, and the difference between a reel, a jig and a slip jig starts to click.
First Hard Shoe
A taste of the percussive side in ordinary shoes, so the rhythms are in your feet before the loud shoes are on them.
Feet Like Percussion
Building Speed
Cleaner lines, quicker feet and full figures danced up to tempo without losing the shape.
Real Hard Shoes
If the percussion has hooked you, this is when the proper shoes make sense — never before.
The Real Thing
Going Further
Trickier steps, sharper timing and the stamina to drive a full figure at speed.
What Next
Trickier set pieces, group figures danced together, or just the quiet win of feet that finally do as they are told.
Irish Dance in Bradford FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need Irish heritage or any experience to join? +
Neither. Irish dance has spread far past Ireland, and the vast majority of our dancers turned up with no family link to it and no dance background either. Beginners are the point of the class.
Where in Bradford do the Irish dance classes run? +
At partner studios in Little Germany and out toward Shipley and Saltaire, with the exact one confirmed when you book. Both areas are an easy reach of the two central stations, and there is no tram system to work around.
What does an Irish dance class in Bradford cost? +
A drop-in is £8, paid per session, with no membership and no contract. Once your local studio has a settled timetable, discounted blocks of sessions become available too.
Do I need special shoes to start? +
No. Flat trainers or thick grippy socks are perfect for the first month or two. Hard shoes are a later, optional purchase, and we will tell you when — and only if — you actually need a pair.
Will I need a partner? +
Never. Irish dance is danced in lines and solo figures, so you can arrive on your own and take part in everything from the first minute. Plenty of people come by themselves.
What's the difference between soft-shoe and hard-shoe? +
Soft-shoe reels and jigs are the light, gliding, springy side; hard-shoe is the loud percussive side, where the shoes hammer out rhythms. We teach both, starting soft and adding the noise as your timing settles.
I'm over sixty — is Irish dance sensible? +
Yes, with the usual honesty: we build ankles and calves up slowly and the stretch at the end matters. The adult class runs a wide spread of ages, and people well past sixty dance in it happily.
Is there a class for younger children in Bradford? +
There is — juniors and teens have their own DBS-supervised groups, and Irish dance is a great early discipline for posture, timing and coordination. Pick the age band on the enquiry form.
Could we book Irish dancing for a hen or group? +
Yes — there's a dedicated irish dancing hen party option for one-off group sessions, and we can travel across the Bradford district and up the Aire Valley to run it wherever you are.
