Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Arriving in your body
A slow warm-up for feet, ankles and spine that undoes the day — desk shoulders down, cyclist's hips opened, weight found over the arches.
Barre
Pliés, tendus and rises with the barre for balance — the same exercises professional dancers do every morning, scaled honestly to adult beginner bodies.
Centre practice
The barre work repeated in open space, where balance becomes the lesson — port de bras, small adagio, and the discovery of your own centre line.
Travelling steps
Simple walks, chassés and small linking steps across the floor in pairs and threes, building the confidence to actually move through space.
Révérence and release
The traditional closing bow, a gentle stretch, and the pleasant surprise of standing taller than you did an hour ago.
About Ballet Classes in Cambridge
Ballet is the slowest promise in dance: nothing about it is instant, and that is exactly why adults fall for it. Our Cambridge classes teach classical technique from first principles — posture, turnout, the logic of the barre — for grown-ups starting from zero or returning after twenty-odd years away.
There is already ballet in Cambridge, and much of it orbits the university. This class is the door for everyone else: no audition, no uniform, no assumed childhood of exams. Just an hour a week where the only competition is with the person you were last Tuesday, and the technique is treated as something you're entitled to at any age.
£8 a class, leggings and socks will do, and the barre doesn't care when you started.

Why Choose Ballet in Cambridge?
Posture that follows you home
Barre work rebuilds the alignment that desks, labs and laptops quietly dismantle — students report standing differently within weeks.
Beginner is a valid rank
The class is built for adult starters, not lapsed children. Every exercise has an honest entry version and nobody is graded on their past.
Strength without the gym
Pliés and rises load legs and core in slow motion — cyclists and rowers find it targets precisely the stabilisers their sport skips.
£8, term-free
Sessions cost £8 each and nothing binds you to the next one — though the barre has a way of getting people back.
Your Ballet Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
The alphabet
Positions and pliés
The five positions, the first port de bras, and the plié that underwrites every other step — learned slowly enough to learn them well.
Standing anew
Weight placement and a lifted spine become habit at the barre first, then start turning up unannounced in queues and on station platforms.
The sentences
Linked exercises
Single steps combine into short barre and centre sequences — tendu into plié into rise — and your memory for movement starts compounding.
Balance earned
Relevés hold longer, wobbles shrink, and the centre of the room stops feeling like open water.
Dancing, officially
Adagio and allegro
Slow controlled phrases and the first small jumps enter the hour — ballet's two temperaments, both finally available to you.
Music leads
Counts give way to phrasing; you begin dancing with the piano rather than after it.
A practice for life
Technique deepens
Turnout, épaulement and cleaner lines keep rewarding attention — ballet's ceiling is decades high and that is its gift to adults.
Your reasons multiply
People arrive for posture or curiosity and stay for the hour of complete absorption — the closest thing to meditation with music and a barre.
Ballet in Cambridge FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Where do the Cambridge ballet classes happen? +
At a central studio between Market Square and Parker's Piece, with proper flooring and barre provision. The confirmed address comes with your booking.
What does a ballet class cost? +
The rate is a flat £8 per session — turn up weekly or dip in monthly at the same price, with no term fees and no registration charges on top.
I have literally never done ballet. Will I be out of my depth? +
No — this class assumes nothing. Every exercise is taught from its simplest honest version, and the format is designed around adults starting from scratch rather than children working towards exams.
I'm in my forties, fifties or beyond — is this really for me? +
Genuinely yes. Adult ballet is one of the fastest-growing corners of dance precisely because the technique scales to any starting body, and the oldest dancers in adult classes are routinely the most devoted.
Do I need a leotard and ballet shoes? +
No. Leggings or joggers with a top you can move in are perfect, and bare feet or grippy socks are fine for your first classes. Soft ballet shoes are a cheap upgrade if you decide to continue.
I'm not remotely flexible. Does that rule me out? +
Not at all — flexibility is an outcome of ballet, not an entry requirement. The class works within each person's current range, and range quietly improves as a side effect of the technique.
I row and cycle — will ballet actually help? +
More than you'd expect. Ballet trains the ankles, hips and deep core stabilisers that repetitive sports leave underused, and the balance and posture work transfers directly to boats, bikes and everything else.
How is the hour structured? +
Classically: a warm-up, barre exercises, centre practice, travelling steps and a closing révérence. It's the same architecture used in professional company class, scaled with total honesty to beginners.
When does the Cambridge ballet class launch? +
The timetable is being opened now — register interest via the contact page or on 07759 656300 and you'll receive the confirmed day, time and studio the moment the ballet slot is set.
