Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Loosen Off and Find the Pocket
We start soft and low, chasing the up-and-down bounce that sits under every hip-hop record, so your body is riding the beat before a single count is taught.
One Named Step, Properly Unpacked
Each week we take a single social dance and pull it apart to how it really works, so you leave owning the mechanics rather than a rough copy off a phone.
Bank It Into a Routine
Those pieces get stacked onto a track into a short routine you can run top to tail — the bit most people turn up for, and the bit that sticks with you.
Answer the Track
Low-key improv games teach you to hear a snare or a kick and reply to it, building the nerve to move without a set plan sat ready in your head.
Optional Circle, Then Stretch
An open circle that nobody is dragged into for anyone who fancies a go, followed by a full stretch-down to close the hour and send you home loose.
About Hip-Hop Classes in Dundee
Hip-hop and street dance often get filed under one label, but on our Dundee timetable they run as two different classes. Our street class tours breaking, house, locking and popping by turn; this one stays put on hip-hop's own material — its groove, the social steps you can name, and routines built straight onto the records. Holding a single lane is the point, since it gives each move the room it needs to settle in.
Dundee has genuine hip-hop of its own. Vibe Dance Company teaches street and hip-hop out on Arbroath Road at number 193, and the charity Showcase the Street runs community sessions from Manhattan Works. Our adult beginner hour sits alongside them rather than on top — one central studio near Nethergate and City Square, plus a second floor over in the West End towards Perth Road.
Rocking up with no timing behind you and not a single routine in your head is exactly what a beginner class is built around, and most of the floor is in the same position. Entry is £8, paid at the door, with nothing to join. Dundee runs on buses rather than any tram, and the centre climbs uphill from the waterfront, so allow yourself a little extra time. Under-eighteens dance in their own staffed, age-grouped sessions.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Dundee?
One Class, One Focus
Instead of skimming every street style, the whole hour lives inside hip-hop — its groove, its social steps, its choreography — which is why the learning actually holds.
Dundee Has the Scene
Vibe Dance Company on Arbroath Road and the Showcase the Street charity keep the city's hip-hop and street life going, so there's somewhere real to take it once you're hooked.
Where the Moves Come From
We break each social dance into its working parts, name them and rebuild them, then build choreography on top — so the movement makes sense in your body, not just on a screen.
Junior Groups Run Apart
Anyone under eighteen trains in separate, staffed, age-banded sessions with vetted teachers, kept well clear of the adult beginner hour.
Your Hip-Hop Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Onto the Beat
Settling In
Simple grooves, a rock or two and your very first social dance. We're after feel and timing long before anything is asked to look sharp.
First-Day Kit
Loose clothes you can shift in and flat trainers with a bit of padding. Water in the bag, and no fussing over how you look.
Stack the Vocabulary
More to Draw On
Extra social dances and grooves, plus the counting that lets you chain them into runs longer than a single move on its own.
Trying Improv
Gentle guided improv eases you into moving with no script — the skill hip-hop is genuinely built around, taken a step at a time.
Sit in the Track
Hearing the Accents
Spotting where a song hits and dropping your moves onto those points, so the dancing reads as meant rather than roughly guessed at.
Fuller Routines
Longer choreography that pulls several weeks of work into one piece you can run clean from the first count to the last.
Your Own Voice
A Stamp of Your Own
You begin bending the steps toward something recognisably yours instead of tracing whoever happens to be standing at the front.
What's Next
Local jams and battle nights, guest workshops around Dundee, or a move across into our street and commercial classes when you're ready.
Hip-Hop in Dundee FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
I have honestly never danced — will I manage? +
Easily. Every beginner hour opens on the plainest bounce going and grows from there, and most of the room arrived with nothing behind them too, so a first-timer never stands out.
Whereabouts in Dundee do the hip-hop classes run? +
At partner studios near Nethergate and City Square in the centre, with a second base over in the West End towards Perth Road. Buses reach both, and we send the exact address once your place is booked.
What's the difference between your hip-hop and street dance class in Dundee? +
Street dance is the broad family that rotates breaking, house, locking and popping. Hip-hop is one part of that, and we hold it for a full hour — the groove, the named social dances, the choreography. Plenty of people take both.
What should I wear to the first class? +
Anything you can move freely in — a tee and joggers do nicely — with flat trainers that carry a touch of cushion. Personal style is part of the culture, so past the basics, turn up looking however you like.
How much does a hip-hop class in Dundee cost? +
Eight pounds a session, handed over on the day. There's no joining fee, no block bought up front and no contract — you come along on the weeks that suit your diary.
Do you teach real foundations, or just copy videos? +
Foundations lead every time. We take each social dance and groove to its parts, name them, put them back together and build choreography from there — so the moves make sense to you rather than being aped off a clip.
Will I be made to freestyle in front of everyone? +
Never pushed. The improv games arrive gently and the closing circle is always a choose-to-join. Oddly enough, once a few weeks pass most people are itching for a turn anyway.
Is there a hip-hop scene near Dundee to join? +
There is. Vibe Dance Company on Arbroath Road and the Showcase the Street charity keep the local street and hip-hop scene busy, and cyphers and workshops surface around the city. Your teacher will point you at the next one.
Do you run sessions for children and teenagers? +
We do. Under-eighteens train in their own staffed, age-banded groups with vetted teachers, run apart from the adult hour. Flag the right age band on the enquiry form and we'll place them.
