Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 min

Frame and Footwear

We set the hold first — a light, tall frame between partners that carries the whole dance. Then a slow walk in time, so the feet learn to travel before they learn to turn.

10–24 min

The Waltz Box

The rise and fall of the waltz goes in as a simple square you can trust. We keep it unfussy until the sway feels like breathing rather than counting.

24–38 min

Foxtrot's Smooth Walk

Slow-quick-quick becomes a gliding stroll across the floor, heel-led and unhurried. This is the most useful step you can own for any wedding or function.

38–50 min

Quickstep Sparkle

We lift the tempo and add a little brightness — chassés and a lock step that skip along. It is livelier, but built on the same calm frame you already have.

50–60 min

Around the Floor

We link a few figures and travel a full circuit as a room, weaving past one another with control. By now the elegance is doing the work for you.

About Ballroom Classes in Durham

Ballroom is the grand, upright tradition of partner dancing — the waltz, the foxtrot, the quickstep — and it rewards poise far more than athleticism. Our Durham classes teach it from the very first hold, so a couple who have never danced, or a single dancer who fancies learning, can both walk in cold and leave with a real figure or two. The whole thing runs on posture, timing and a good frame, all of which we build slowly.

We lean into a particular kind of elegance here, and it is emphatically not the tan-and-sequins spectacle of the Blackpool ballroom or a big-city showcase. Durham is the city of the Prince Bishops, men who once minted their own coins and kept near-royal state, and that regal, understated bearing is exactly the note ballroom likes — carriage over flash, dignity over dazzle. County Durham has a quiet, long-standing social ballroom scene of its own, and we are glad to point you toward it once you have your footing.

Reaching the studio takes a moment's planning, so here it is plainly. Durham station sits up the hill to the north-west of the centre and the historic core is all cobbles and gradients, with no tram or Metro to smooth the way. Park once at the Prince Bishops or Milburngate car park and come in on foot, and save the smart shoes for the sprung floor rather than the walk down Saddler Street.

Your Ballroom Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

1

First Steps

The Hold

You will build a proper frame and take your first waltz box in the opening class.

Just Walk

We start with walking in time, so rhythm feels natural before any turns arrive.

2

Building a Repertoire

Two or Three Dances

The waltz, a foxtrot walk and a taste of quickstep all enter within the first weeks.

Leading and Following

The signals between partners get clearer, so you move together, not side by side.

3

Adding Polish

Rise and Fall

The waltz swing deepens and your travel around the room turns smooth and sure.

Floorcraft

You learn to navigate a busy floor gracefully without ever breaking your frame.

4

On the Floor

Social Dancing

You are ready for a County Durham tea dance or a family wedding first dance.

Keep Refining

Move on into new figures and dances — the tango and Viennese waltz await.

Ballroom in Durham FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I have to bring a partner? +

No. Couples are very welcome, but single dancers are too — we rotate partners through the class so everyone gets to dance.

We have never danced together before. Is that a problem? +

Not at all. Most couples arrive as complete beginners. We build the frame and the first figures from nothing, at a gentle pace.

What should we wear? +

Smart-casual clothes you can move in, and a shoe with a smooth sole that turns easily. Save any heels for the studio floor rather than Durham's cobbles.

How much is a class? +

£8 as a drop-in, paid per session, with no contracts or memberships to commit to.

Where in Durham do the classes run? +

In a central Durham studio confirmed on enquiry. The station is uphill to the north-west and there is no Metro, so park at Prince Bishops or Milburngate and walk in.

How long is a session? +

A full 60 minutes, from setting the frame through to travelling a circuit of the floor.

Is this like Strictly or Blackpool? +

It shares the dances, but our focus is understated, real-world elegance rather than competition glitz — poise and confidence you can use at any function.

Can this help for our wedding first dance? +

Absolutely. A steady waltz or foxtrot is exactly what a first dance needs, and these classes give you that grounding.

How do I book? +

Complete the enquiry form on this page and we will send over the next available class times and the venue details.
