Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0-10 min

Attitude Warm-Up

Rolling shoulders, hip figure-eights and a walk practised the length of the room - we loosen the body and find the unhurried, deliberate pace burlesque is built on.

10-25 min

The Tease Toolkit

Glove peels, boa poses, the shimmy and the classic over-the-shoulder glance. Small isolated moves, each one drilled slowly so the reveal lands rather than rushes.

25-40 min

Chair & Floor Work

Sitting, leaning and rising choreography around a single chair - the cabaret centrepiece. We break the transitions down so they feel safe long before they feel sultry.

40-52 min

Routine Building

Stitching the moves into a short number to one track - thinking about where the audience's eye travels and how a held pause can say more than a spin.

52-60 min

Cool Down & Photos

Stretching out the hips and shoulders, then the optional group boa photo. You leave standing taller than you walked in.

About Burlesque Classes in Gloucester

Burlesque is the art of the slow reveal - a performance style that trades speed for suggestion and puts personality, wit and self-possession centre stage. Our Gloucester classes teach the vocabulary honestly: the walk, the glove peel, the boa, the shimmy and the chair routine, all learned at a pace that builds confidence rather than nerves. Nothing has to come off; the tease itself is the whole point.

Gloucester keeps a genuine after-dark character - the bars and late rooms around Eastgate Street, and the cabaret-friendly warehouse spaces down at the historic Docks, give the style a natural home in the city. You need none of that to join us, though. Most people arrive having never once performed, simply wanting a couple of hours a week that are entirely their own.

There is something fitting about learning a craft built on detail in the city of the Tailor of Gloucester - the routine, like the waistcoat in that tale, comes together stitch by patient stitch, one small movement drilled until the whole thing finally sits right. Wear clothes you can move in, bring heels if you own a pair or stay in socks, and expect to laugh a great deal.

Why Choose Burlesque in Gloucester?

Confidence That Sticks

The real skill you build is holding a room's attention entirely on your own terms. Members tell us the posture and self-assurance follow them into work meetings and nights out long after the boa goes back in the bag.

No Judgement, Any Body

Burlesque has always celebrated every shape, age and size - this is the least body-conscious room you will find anywhere. The class is women and non-binary friendly and built entirely on genuine encouragement.

Real Performance Craft

You learn stagecraft, not merely steps - timing, focus, the reveal and the recovery. It is proper theatre skill, scaled patiently to a first-timer's confidence.

Made For a Group

Come with friends or turn it into a hen do - the style is built for a room that is firmly on your side. Ask us about a private group session for celebrations.

Your Burlesque Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

01

First Tease

Getting Started

You learn the burlesque walk, a glove peel and two or three signature poses. Nothing fast, nothing exposing - just the grammar of the style and the feeling of moving with real intent.

What to Wear

Leggings or shorts and a fitted top, plus heels if you have them or grip socks if you do not. Bring a robe or cardigan you would not mind pressing into service as a prop.

02

Finding Your Character

Developing Style

Chair choreography, the shimmy and the art of the pause. You begin to find your own persona - playful, sultry, comic or classic - and let it colour every move.

Musicality

Learning to ride a slow brass track, to sit inside the beat rather than chase it, and to let silence and stillness do a good part of the work for you.

03

Owning a Routine

Full Numbers

Linking sequences into a complete one-song routine with an entrance, a build and a finish. Performing it for the room if you fancy it, or keeping it purely for yourself.

Props & Polish

Boa work, glove and fan handling, and the small details - a glance, a slow level change - that quietly turn steps into an actual show.

04

On the Cabaret Floor

Performance Ready

Confident with a full routine and the stagecraft to match. Optional showcase spots and group numbers for anyone who wants the lights on them.

Where Next

Move across into heels or commercial for more choreography, or keep building your own solo repertoire with fresh tracks and themes each term.

Burlesque in Gloucester FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

What actually happens in a burlesque class? +

You warm up, learn a handful of classic moves - the walk, a glove peel, a shimmy, some chair work - and by the end string them into a short routine to one song. It is playful, technical and far more about attitude than acrobatics.

Do I have to take anything off? +

No. Never. The tease in burlesque is about suggestion, timing and confidence, not nudity. In class you keep whatever you feel comfortable in on the entire time - gloves and a boa are as far as any peeling ever goes.

I have no dance experience - is that a problem? +

Not in the slightest. Burlesque is one of the friendliest styles to begin with because it prizes character over technical precision. We break every move down slowly and there is nobody at the back marking your lines.

What should I wear and do I need heels? +

Comfortable clothes you can move in and either heels you can stand in or grip socks - both work perfectly well. Bring a dressing gown or an old shirt you can use as a prop if you happen to have one.

How much is a class in Gloucester? +

Every session is £8 on the door, paid as a simple drop-in with no membership or block to sign up for. Turn up the weeks that suit you and skip the ones that do not.

Is it only for women? +

The class is women and non-binary led and welcoming, and it celebrates every body, age and background. Burlesque's whole history is one of inclusion - you will fit right in from the first session.

Where in Gloucester are the classes held? +

Sessions run from a central studio near the Eastgate and Westgate streets, with a Docks-side option depending on the timetable. The exact room is confirmed when you book, and it is a short walk from the bus station and the Quays car parks.

Can we book burlesque for a hen party? +

Yes - it is one of our most-requested hen themes. A private group gets its own routine, props and a photo at the end. Flat-rate group pricing is separate from the £8 drop-in; just ask us for a quote.

Will I have to perform in front of people? +

Only ever if you want to. Plenty of members come purely for the fun and the fitness and never once step onto a stage. Showcase spots are always optional and never sprung on you.
