Get Loose Over a Track
We ride an easy warm-up straight across the music, letting the bounce settle into the knees and ribs, so your body has already met the beat by the time any teaching begins.
Groove Foundations
The weighted bounces and rocks that sit under everything come first — the small movements that separate hip-hop from a set of counted steps — drilled slowly until they stop feeling like homework.
Add a Named Step
One classic party dance joins your kit each week, taught with the story of where it started, then folded into a short routine on a track you will already know from the radio.
Answer the Beat
Gentle freestyle games teach you to catch a snare or a bassline and reply to it with movement, so your nerve grows without a fixed sequence to hide behind.
Open Circle, Then Stretch
A no-pressure circle for anyone who fancies a moment in the middle — take it or skip it — followed by a proper stretch to shut the hour down.
About Hip-Hop Classes in Peterborough
Street dance is the family name for a set of styles — locking, popping, breaking, house — usually cycled through a class in turn. Hip-hop is a single member of that family, keeping to the grooves, the named party dances and the choreography set to the records. Handing it the full hour, rather than a slice, is what lets the movement actually settle into you.
We will be honest about Peterborough. The city's dance strength is broad and youth-facing — the Hebden School of Dancing ranks across almost every style, while Dance Waves Academy and EB Dance carry much of the younger street and hip-hop work. A grown-ups' hip-hop hour is the quieter gap, and it is the one we run, just off Cathedral Square in the centre. No talk of a hip-hop capital — just a friendly weekly class for adults.
Turning up with no timing and no routines behind you is precisely who a beginners' hour is built for. It is £8, handed over on the day, with nothing to join and nothing to sign. Peterborough station and the Queensgate bus station both sit a short walk from the room; there is no tram or metro here, so trains, buses and the A1 do the work. Under-eighteens dance in their own separate, staffed sessions.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Peterborough?
One Member, a Full Hour
Instead of touring the whole street family in a single class, the session settles on hip-hop by itself — groove, party dances and choreography — and that narrower focus is precisely why the learning sticks.
Straight Talk on the Scene
Peterborough's adult hip-hop circle is small and we are upfront about it, glad to point you toward the Hebden School and Dance Waves for the wider youth and street timetable.
Named Steps, Real Stories
Every social step arrives with where and when it began — the Running Man, the Cabbage Patch, the Reject — so you gather a living vocabulary instead of one frozen eight-count.
Younger Ages, Separate Rooms
Kids and teens train in their own vetted, age-grouped classes kept clear of the adult hour — flag the age band on the form and we will place them right.
Your Hip-Hop Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Onto the Bounce
Where You Begin
Simple grooves, a rock or two and your opening party dance. We are chasing feel and timing well before anything looks razor-sharp.
Kit for Day One
Loose, comfy clothing and flat trainers with a bit of cushioning. Water in the bag, and no fussing over how you look.
Fill the Kit Bag
More to Draw On
Further party dances and grooves, plus the counting that lets you thread them into runs longer than a single move.
First Freestyle
Short guided improvisation nudges you into moving without a plan — the very thing hip-hop is really built around.
Ride the Pocket
Hearing the Track
Picking out the accents in a song and dropping your moves onto them, so the dancing looks intended rather than roughly guessed.
Longer Combos
Fuller choreography that gathers a few weeks of work into one piece you can run clean from top to tail.
Sound Like Yourself
Your Own Stamp
You start bending the steps toward something recognisably yours instead of copying whoever happens to stand at the front.
Where Next
Local jams and open sessions, guest workshops, or a crossover into our street and commercial classes.
Hip-Hop in Peterborough FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Is there much of a hip-hop scene in Peterborough? +
The adult side is honestly modest. The Hebden School of Dancing ranks broadly and Dance Waves Academy and EB Dance cover a lot of the younger street and hip-hop work, but a dedicated grown-ups' hour is thin on the ground — which is the gap we fill. We will not oversell the city or claim a capital it does not have.
How is this different from the street dance class in Peterborough? +
Picture street dance as the whole family — popping, locking, breaking and house, cycled week to week. Hip-hop is one member of it, and here that member gets the entire session: the groove underneath, the party dances, the choreography on a track. Some people study both; plenty are happy with just this.
Where in Peterborough do the hip-hop classes run? +
At partner studios just off Cathedral Square in the centre, a short walk from Peterborough station and the Queensgate bus station. There is no tram here, so we choose rooms near bus stops and parking, and send the precise address once your place is booked.
What does a hip-hop class in Peterborough cost? +
Eight pounds a class, paid on the day. No joining fee, no block bought up front and no contract — you come along on the weeks that fit around your diary and pay only for those.
I have genuinely never danced — will I keep up? +
You will. Every beginners' hour opens on the plainest groove going and grows from there, and the room is mostly people who arrived with nothing behind them. A first-timer never stands out, because most of the floor is in the same boat.
Do you teach real foundations, or just copy videos? +
Foundations lead every session. We take each party dance and groove apart, name its pieces and rebuild it, then use that to build choreography — so the movement makes sense in your own body rather than being traced off a phone screen.
What should I put on for the first class? +
Anything you can move easily in — a tee and joggers do nicely — with flat trainers that carry a little cushion. Personal style is part of the culture, so beyond comfortable and flat, wear whatever feels like you.
Is this the same as your commercial or heels classes? +
No. Commercial chases music-video polish and heels is its own craft in a heeled shoe. Hip-hop here is about the groove and street-rooted party dances. They sit happily side by side, but each gets taught in its own session.
Do you run classes for children and teenagers too? +
We do — age-grouped sessions for younger dancers and teens run alongside the adult hour, taught by DBS-checked staff. Choose the right age band on the enquiry form and we will steer you to the correct group.
