Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Lock Into the Nod
The room loosens off to a steady head-nod tempo — rolling shoulders, shifting weight foot to foot — until the pulse settles somewhere in your chest and you stop having to think about it.
One Dance, One Story
Each session hands you a single party dance and its history — where the Running Man, the A-Town or the Nae Nae came from, who set it off, which year it swept the clubs — then teaches it move for move.
Stack the Eight-Counts
The week's choreography lands in bite-sized pieces. We mark them slowly, join them up, and loop the lot to the record until your body remembers what your head keeps mislaying.
Rough It Up
The identical steps, made personal — knees dropped, hits sharpened, timing shoved a hair behind the beat — the trick that lets eight people on matching counts still read as eight separate dancers.
Take the Floor
Little groups rotate onto the floor while everyone else brings the volume, and we close on a full stretch with a track or two left playing to wind down on.
About Hip-Hop Classes in Sheffield
Sheffield taught Britain to love a machine. The Human League, Heaven 17 and Cabaret Voltaire wired up synth-pop here, and Warp Records made the city the home of bleep techno — so a hip-hop class in the Steel City lands among people who already respect a beat. Our hip-hop dance classes in Sheffield keep the name precise: the grooves, the party dances and the choreography that belong to the culture, rather than a quick lap of everything labelled urban.
Locking, popping, breaking and house — the whole spreading family — belong to our street dance class; this hour stays put inside hip-hop and goes deep. We teach out of partner studios in and around Kelham Island and the centre, naming the venue the day you book. Come off the train at Sheffield station and the Supertram carries you the last stretch, which, in one of Britain's hilliest cities, your calves will appreciate.
Turning up with no moves at all is entirely normal — we start from the nod and add a layer at a time. The adult room welcomes everyone between 17 and 75, while under-17s train in their own junior and teen groups with DBS-checked teachers, and a single class is £8 with no sign-up. That undercuts two rounds on Division Street, and you leave able to actually dance something.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Sheffield?
History You Can Dance
Nothing is taught as a bare sequence — you get the era it came from and the dances that led up to it, so by the end of a term you can talk about hip-hop as well as do it.
Born in a Machine City
Sheffield handed the country its synthesisers and its bleeps. There is a certain rightness to learning a rhythm-built music in the town that has always treated a beat as something worth engineering.
Moves With a Long Life
These are dances made for parties, not just studios — the sort of thing that resurfaces at a wedding, a birthday or the kitchen at midnight, which makes the hour oddly practical.
Juniors and Teens On the Bill
Younger dancers get their own age-banded groups under DBS-checked teachers — and it is, without fail, the class Sheffield parents email us about first.
Your Hip-Hop Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Find the Nod
Getting Started
Rock steps, weight changes and a party dance or two simple enough to use the same weekend. The point is feeling the rhythm; neat edges can come later.
What to Wear
Joggers, a loose top, flat trainers. Personal style is welcome down the line, but the opening month only asks that you move freely and are happy to sweat.
Bank the Vocabulary
Social Dances
The list of party dances grows every week, until you have one filed away from just about every era the music has lived through.
Longer Phrases
Routines lengthen from a single eight into whole verses, and you begin holding sequences as phrases rather than isolated steps.
Grow a Signature
Musicality
Some weeks you chase the drums, some weeks the bassline — the choice of which part of the track to answer is where your own style begins to show.
Confidence
The bit where small groups run it alone stops being the scary part and becomes the part you turn up for.
Into the Scene
Advanced Practice
Routines come quicker and land denser, and a groove that is recognisably yours starts bleeding into everything else you dance.
What Comes Next
Sheffield's jams and club nights, our commercial and street dance classes, or quietly becoming the person who runs the dancefloor at every party.
Hip-Hop in Sheffield FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Where in Sheffield are the hip-hop classes held? +
Around Kelham Island and the city centre, at partner studios we name as soon as you book. Sheffield station and the Supertram at Park Square are both a short walk off, and there is free Park & Ride at Meadowhall and Middlewood if you drive.
What does a hip-hop class in Sheffield cost? +
£8 on the day for a drop-in, with no membership or joining fee behind it. When your studio locks in a regular weekly time, discounted blocks open up next to it.
Can I come along having never danced? +
That is who the beginner sessions exist for. The nod comes first and asks nothing of you; every move stacked on top of it is taken apart and taught from the ground.
What should I wear for hip-hop? +
Something you can move and sweat in — joggers and a tee are ideal — plus flat-soled trainers. Pack water; the choreography section will hunt it out for you.
How is this different from the street dance class in Sheffield? +
Street dance samples the whole family — locking, popping, breaking, house — on a rotation. This class is hip-hop by itself, spending the full hour on its grooves, party dances and choreography. A fair few people take both.
What music will we actually dance to? +
Anything from golden-era boom bap to this month's chart hits, chosen to fit what we are learning — and given the town founded Warp Records, do not be surprised by the odd electronic detour.
Do you run hip-hop for children in Sheffield? +
Yes — juniors at 6–8 and 9–14 plus a 15–16 teen class, each led by DBS-checked teachers. Just pick the age band on the enquiry form.
Is hip-hop a proper workout? +
More than it lets on. Sixty minutes of grooves and routine is real cardio with plenty of leg in it, but the music hides the effort so well it rarely feels like training.
Do I have to freestyle in front of everyone? +
Not on the spot, ever. We approach it through guided drills built on steps you already own, and the circle is always an invitation you can decline.
