Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Warm-Up and Posture

Loosen the ankles and set the tall, still upper body Irish dance is known for before the feet get busy.

10–25 mins

Soft-Shoe Steps

Rises, points and the light-footed movement of the jig and reel, taken slowly and counted right through.

25–40 mins

Hard-Shoe Rhythm

Add the percussive side — heel and toe beats that drum the rhythm out loud, built up phrase by phrase.

40–50 mins

Link It Together

Join the steps into a short sequence, keeping the timing crisp and the arms quiet and low.

50–60 mins

Full Speed and Stretch

Run the sequence up to tempo, then cool the calves and ankles down properly to finish.

About Irish Dancing Classes in Swindon

Irish dance holds the body tall and dead still from the waist up while the feet carry everything — quick, sprung, exact steps that sound the rhythm out on their own. The soft-shoe half glides through jigs and reels; the hard-shoe half is the percussive one, heel and tip knocking a beat out loud enough for a whole room to feel it under the floor.

When we went hunting for a weekly Irish class an adult in Swindon could just walk into, we came up short — there are children's schools and the occasional feis around Wiltshire, but no standing grown-up fixture. So this one is ours: our own teacher, a plain beginner-to-improver route, on the calendar every week of the year rather than surfacing only near St Patrick's Day.

You don't have to kit yourself out first. To begin, wear whatever you can spin in — a smooth leather sole is ideal, though a firm pair of socks gets you through the opening weeks — and leave buying proper hard shoes until you're certain the class has stuck. Each week is £8. Prefer to keep it private? We'll load the sound and the syllabus into the car and teach your group at its own venue, out through Royal Wootton Bassett, Highworth, Cricklade and Wroughton.

Book as a group and we'll bring the music and the steps to your hall anywhere across Wiltshire.

Your Irish Dancing Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

First Steps

Getting Started

Posture, the light soft-shoe basics and the timing of a simple jig, all taken slowly.

What to Wear

Comfortable clothes and any smooth-soled shoe or firm socks — no kit to buy yet.

Month 2–3

Into the Rhythm

Soft to Hard

Cleaner soft-shoe work and a first taste of the percussive hard-shoe beats.

Shoe Talk

When, and whether, proper hard shoes are worth it — only once you know you're staying.

Month 4–6

Real Steps

Sequences

Joining steps into recognisable jigs and reels with sharp timing and still arms.

Stamina

The springy, lifted footwork starts to feel natural rather than tiring.

Month 6+

Improver

Confident Footwork

Faster tempos, longer sequences and genuine control over the rhythm.

Something to Aim For

Informal show-and-tells, or a set piece if the group fancies performing it.

Irish Dancing in Swindon FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Isn't there already a weekly adult Irish class in Swindon? +

Not one we could find. There are children's schools and the odd feis around Wiltshire, but no standing adult class you can simply walk into. That's the gap this one exists to fill.

Do I need Irish roots or a partner? +

Neither. Heritage isn't required, and there's no partner work — it's danced solo in lines and sets, so you turn up on your own and join straight in.

Where in Swindon do the classes run? +

In a central hall, confirmed when you book. If you'd rather stay local, group bookings come to your own venue anywhere across Wiltshire instead.

What's an Irish dance class in Swindon cost? +

£8 a session, paid on the night. No membership, and nothing to buy up front to get yourself started.

Do I have to buy shoes before I start? +

No. Any smooth sole you can turn on is fine early on, and firm socks even see you through the first weeks. Hard shoes only make sense once the class has stuck.

Am I too old to take this up? +

Almost certainly not. Adults arrive at all sorts of ages, and the beginner steps are taught slowly — the springy footwork builds over the weeks, it doesn't need to be there on day one.

Is this a céilí or a barn dance? +

No — this is technical step dance: the jigs and reels, quiet arms and busy feet, not social céilí figures. A different thing entirely, though both are a good night out.

Can you bring Irish dancing to our group across Wiltshire? +

Yes. We'll pack the music and the steps and teach at your hall out through Royal Wootton Bassett, Highworth, Cricklade, Wroughton and beyond. Just ask for a group booking.

Is there anything to work towards? +

If you want it — informal show-and-tells for the group, a set piece to perform, or simply steady progress along the beginner-to-improver path. No pressure either way.
