Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

First 10 min

Release on the Floor

We begin down on the floor, warming the spine and joints and coaxing out release — letting held tension drain so movement can start from the centre rather than the shoulders. Contemporary opens by softening instead of bracing, which is why it leads the hour.

10–20 min

Weight and Breath

You explore how weight travels and how breath drives movement, learning to fall and rebound with control. This is the raw material of every contemporary phrase, and it arrives long before any set choreography.

20–34 min

Into the Floor and Back

Rolls, spirals and the trip down to the floor and back up without a scramble come next, taught in unhurried stages so both the way down and the way up feel secure and unbroken.

34–50 min

The Press-Room Lab

Borrowing the rhythm of Watford's old printing presses — the stamp of type, the turn of a page, the roll of the gravure drum — we improvise to shifting counts and found sound. You choose movement on the spot instead of copying a phrase, and this is where contemporary tips over into feeling like yours.

Last 10 min

Dance the Phrase

The threads gather into a short flowing phrase over atmospheric music, run a handful of times, so you finish having danced something whole and expressive rather than filed away a row of separate drills.

About Contemporary Classes in Watford

Contemporary dance classes in Watford are where technique and feeling finally meet — floorwork, momentum and breath used to say something, not just to hit shapes. It draws on ballet, release and modern dance, then hands you room to move the way your own body wants to.

Watford makes a fitting home for it. This was once one of Europe's great printing towns — Sun Engraving on Whippendell Road and Odhams Press turned out most of Britain's weekly magazines, and that pulse of type, page and rolling press is exactly the kind of rhythm contemporary loves to improvise against. For a greener counterpoint there is Cassiobury Park's 190 acres sweeping down to the Grand Union Canal, and the town's stages — the Edwardian Palace Theatre and the recently reopened Colosseum, long famed for its acoustics — are the sort of rooms this dance was made for. We reference them for inspiration only; the class is entirely our own.

One flat £8 drop-in, run near the town centre, on the Cassiobury side, or at your own space across Watford and south-west Herts. No mirrors to fret over and no set look to hit — just room to move.

Why Choose Contemporary in Watford?

Meaning over neatness

Nobody is chasing a perfect line here. The aim is movement that carries weight and intention, which is why complete beginners often surprise themselves fastest.

Strong and mobile

All the floorwork, rolling and rebounding builds genuine core strength and supple joints — you leave looser and steadier than you arrived.

Learn to improvise

The press-room lab teaches you to make movement up on the spot, a skill that unlocks the whole style and quietly builds nerve.

Watford's own texture

From printing-press rhythm to the green sweep of Cassiobury, the class is rooted in the town rather than a generic studio anywhere.

Your Contemporary Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

01

Weeks 1–2 — Letting Go

Release stops feeling strange

Softening into the floor and starting movement from your centre begins to feel natural instead of unfamiliar.

Falling with control

You learn to drop and rebound without bracing, the trust that all contemporary floorwork is built on.

02

Weeks 3–6 — Down and Up Again

Floorwork travels

Rolls and spirals stop being static and start carrying you across the room in one unbroken line.

The body unlocks

Hips, spine and shoulders free up, and phrases that felt impossible in week one begin to flow.

03

Months 2–3 — Choosing for Yourself

Improvising for real

The press-room lab becomes the part you look forward to, where you choose the movement rather than borrow it.

Phrases with weight

Your short sequences start to carry feeling and dynamics, not just correct positions.

04

Ongoing — A Voice of Your Own

Your movement signature

The way you fall, pause and travel becomes distinctly yours — the point where contemporary stops being learned and starts being spoken.

Keep deepening, no strings

Every session is a flat £8 with no block to buy, so you can keep going as deep as you like at your own pace.

Contemporary in Watford FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I need to be flexible or trained first? +

No. Contemporary dance classes in Watford start from the ground up, and the floorwork actually builds the flexibility as you go — turning up with none is completely normal.

What actually is contemporary dance? +

It is expressive dance that blends ballet, modern and release technique, uses the floor as much as standing, and prizes momentum, breath and meaning over rigid shapes.

Is there any partner work? +

Not as a rule. Contemporary is danced solo within the group, though you will sometimes share space and timing with others — no lifts or partnering required.

What should I wear? +

Soft, stretchy layers you can roll around in, and bare feet or socks — no shoes, since so much of the class happens on the floor.

What is the press-room lab? +

It is our improvisation section, named for Watford's printing heritage. We move to shifting counts and found sound and you invent the movement on the spot — it is where the style truly opens up.

How much is a class? +

A flat £8 per drop-in, every time. No block booking, no membership, no contract.

Will it get me fit? +

Yes, in a low-impact way — the rolling, rebounding and floorwork build real core strength and mobility without any of the pounding of a high-energy class.

Is there a contemporary scene in Watford? +

Local studios such as Aviv teach contemporary alongside other styles, and the town's stages — the Palace Theatre and the reopened Colosseum — host plenty of movement work. We run our own adult classes and simply take inspiration from the town around us.

Where in Watford are the classes? +

Near the town centre, over on the Cassiobury and West Watford side, or at your own venue across Watford and south-west Herts. There is no tram, but the Tube reaches Watford on the Metropolitan line and fast trains run to Euston in about fifteen minutes.
