Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm, Then One Part at a Time
With the body warmed we run isolations — the head alone, then the shoulders, the ribcage, the hips, each travelling while the rest stays frozen. Learning to move one section on its own is the bedrock the style stands on.
Drilling in Place
The technique gets built standing still: pliés, controlled kicks, spotting, and the mechanics that keep a turn balanced. We lock the shapes down before ever letting them travel anywhere.
Sending It Across the Room
Now everything is set loose to move — leaps, chaîné turns and stretched-out combinations thrown from one corner to the other, so that careful standing technique becomes dancing that fills the space.
Shaping the Combination
The hour's material collects into a short routine with light and shade, hitting hard on the accents and softening between them, finished enough that a run feels like a performance.
Dance It, Then Stretch Long
One run at full pace to feel it as an actual number, followed by a thorough stretch through the legs and back that did the heavy lifting.
About Jazz Classes in Brighton
Brighton is a good city to learn jazz in, because there is somewhere for it to point. New Road's Theatre Royal has been staging shows since 1807 and still brings pre-West-End tours and pantomime through; the Dome and the Brighton Centre host the larger touring productions across the year. Drill a combination on a weeknight and there are real footlights a walk away — precisely the sort of stage jazz dance classes in Brighton are ultimately preparing you for.
Watch a big stage number and most of what you are seeing is jazz: a single isolated shoulder over a held body, a kick snapped up to eye level, a turn that halts stone dead on the beat. It hands you attack, control and the ability to throw a line clean to the back of a room. It is also the trunk that musical theatre, commercial and heels all branch off, which is why so many dancers start here.
Nobody checks how bendy you are at the door. Range is something the class grows in you gradually, warm-up by warm-up and stretch by stretch — an outcome rather than a requirement. Ordinary clothes and trainers see you through the early stages, and jazz shoes are a treat for later. Adults begin from around seventeen, younger dancers have their own supervised groups, and every class is a flat £8.

Why Choose Jazz in Brighton?
Real Footlights Down the Road
With tours and panto rolling through the Theatre Royal, the Dome and the Brighton Centre all year, the precision you sweat over aims at genuine stages nearby rather than an endlessly reflected mirror.
Made to Project
Because jazz is built to carry to the furthest seat, you learn to send energy outward and back a beat completely, instead of quietly scaling everything down for your own reflection.
Beginners Start Level
No stretch and no history costs you nothing here — flexibility and technique rise side by side from whatever your body brings on evening one.
The Trunk of Three Styles
Musical theatre, commercial and heels all stem from jazz, so hours banked here trim the route into any of them when you fancy branching out.
Your Jazz Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Nailing Control
First Principles
Posture, isolations and simple kicks and turns, with the flashy material shelved until accuracy and control are dependable.
Dress Code
Snug, stretchy layers so the lines are readable, plus trainers or grip socks. Jazz shoes come much later.
Taking Up Space
On the Move
Chaîné turns, pas de bourrée and leaps ferried across the floor, growing your stamina and spatial sense together.
Locking to Sound
Pinning the attack and give of each move to the music, so a routine looks danced instead of merely executed.
Whole Numbers
Stretched-Out Routines
Weeks of technique gather into longer pieces with dynamics, direction changes and a good dose of attitude.
Facing Out
Head lifted and gaze forward, throwing energy beyond the mirror at a crowd that is imagined today and possibly there tomorrow.
Stage-Ready
Dependable Turns
Turns you can bank on, controlled lines and a fast eye for absorbing new choreography.
The Next Move
Onward to musical-theatre or commercial work, a role in a local show, or auditions if that is where you are headed.
Jazz in Brighton FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Where do the jazz classes take place in Brighton? +
A partner studio close to New Road and the Theatre Royal, an easy walk from Brighton station. We pick somewhere central and simple to reach by bus, and you get the precise address the instant you book.
What is the price of a jazz class in Brighton? +
£8 flat per visit, on the day. There is nothing to join and no bundle to buy ahead — you pay for the sessions you attend and nothing for any you skip.
Could a complete adult beginner cope with jazz? +
Absolutely — the beginners' tier is designed around exactly that. Combinations are taken apart slowly from zero, and everyone beside you is also an adult starting fresh, not a former child performer quietly outshining the room.
Must I be flexible first? +
Not at all, and it works the opposite way round. Jazz builds flexibility; it does not demand it as a condition of entry. Weekly warming and stretching means your range simply grows over the weeks and is never needed on day one.
What is there to aim at in Brighton? +
Plenty that is real. With the Theatre Royal, the Dome and the Brighton Centre running shows all year, a routine you polish has actual boards to work toward rather than just the studio glass.
What should I wear, and are jazz shoes essential? +
Fitted, stretchy things so your shape shows, with trainers or grip socks to start. Jazz shoes sharpen a turn eventually but are not an early necessity — pick some up once the style has really taken hold of you.
How does jazz differ from contemporary and commercial? +
Set against contemporary, jazz is crisper and more theatrical than its flowing floorwork. Set against commercial, it is more technically anchored than the video-driven style. They swap ideas endlessly, yet jazz stays the sharpest-edged of the three.
Does jazz set you up for musical theatre? +
As well as anything could. The projection, isolations, kicks and turns that carry stage numbers are jazz at root, which is why performers so often log time in it before anything else.
Do I need ballet or prior training? +
Not a bit. Ballet is a general help, but jazz owns its own technique and we start it from the ground. Many of our adult beginners have never been inside a studio before, and the beginner class is built for precisely them.
