Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Shake Off the Day Job

We start loose and slow — rolling out shoulders, hips and ankles — then change gear completely. The version of you that clocked off work waits outside; the one who walks the floor like she owns it turns up. These ten minutes are really about finding her.

10–25 mins

Build the Vocabulary

Next come the raw ingredients, one at a time: a shoulder roll, the drop of a hip, the slow theatre of a glove easing down the arm. We drill each on its own until it looks chosen rather than accidental, and you walk away with a small kit of moves to draw on.

25–40 mins

It's All in the Delivery

The moves are the easy half; the cheek sells the rest. We work on eye contact that lands on one person and holds, a pause you can sit inside without flinching, and the gap between doing a move and performing it. This is the part nobody expects to enjoy quite so much.

40–50 mins

Put It Into a Number

The pieces join into one short routine — some weeks a brassy big-band strut, other weeks a slow torch song or something off this year's charts — arranged so newcomers and regulars finish shoulder to shoulder on the last beat.

50–60 mins

Run It, Compare Notes

You dance the whole thing once, fully committed and played dead straight, because that is the only way to feel it work. Then we stretch down and swap notes over who found the cheekiest moment of the lot.

About Burlesque Classes in Hull

Burlesque rewards patience and cheek over anything athletic. The real skill is commanding attention: a slow reveal of a wrist, a look held a beat too long, the confidence to stand perfectly still and let a whole room lean in. Beginners are always surprised by how much of it is acting, and how little depends on how you look.

Hull has never been short of women with nerve — think of Amy Johnson pointing a tiny plane at Australia, or the Hessle Road wives who faced down the trawler bosses and won. That backbone suits a dance about owning your space. We run sessions in private rooms in the city centre and the Old Town, where converted warehouses have long housed the after-dark scene.

One question turns up in every first email, so here it is plainly: nothing comes off. Burlesque here is about attitude, not undress — the tease is all suggestion. You leave with a straighter back and a bolder walk, and the address of your nearest studio arrives the moment you book.

Why Choose Burlesque in Hull?

A Room That Has Your Back

Our burlesque classes fill up with people who arrived every bit as nervous as you. It is one of the warmest, least judgemental rooms we run — far more encouragement than competition, and a great deal of laughter.

Attitude Over Athletics

You do not need to be fit, flexible or a certain size. Burlesque was built for real bodies and pays off timing and confidence, both of which we teach from nothing. If you can walk across a room, you can begin.

Taught by Performers

Your teachers work the cabaret and stage circuit, so what you pick up is the genuine craft — the timing, the reveal, the way to hold a silence — rather than a watered-down version of it.

Nerves Turn Into Nerve

The whole point is looking comfortable being looked at. Master that under studio lights and the everyday stuff — presentations, introductions, walking into a packed room — stops feeling like such a mountain.

Your Burlesque Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

Finding Your Feet

The First Steps

You get comfortable with the basic moves and, more to the point, with being watched. Expect a lot of laughing at yourself in the best possible way.

What to Wear

Anything you can move in — leggings and a top are perfect. Add heels if you own a pair, but bare feet or trainers are absolutely fine to begin.

Month 2–3

Growing a Character

Your Stage Self

You start shaping a performing version of yourself — a name, an attitude, a way of moving that is a size bolder than everyday you.

First Full Number

The separate moves knit into your first complete routine, and it lands why the timing matters far more than the steps.

Month 4–6

Owning the Space

A Bigger Presence

Your reach grows to fill the whole room, and the pauses stop feeling awkward and start feeling powerful.

Props Come In

Feather fans, gloves and a boa get folded in now your feet are certain, adding polish instead of panic.

Month 6+

Ready to Shine

Full Performance

You can carry a complete routine, in character from first pose to last, with real command of the room.

Where Next

Some dancers keep it just for themselves; others take it to a cabaret night or book a group session for a big occasion.

Burlesque in Hull FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I have to take anything off? +

No — nothing comes off, ever. Our burlesque classes in Hull are about attitude, timing and the art of the tease, all done fully clothed. The suggestion does the work, not the undressing.

I've never danced in my life — is that a problem? +

Not at all. Most of the room is in exactly the same boat. Burlesque pays off confidence and timing far more than technique, and both are things we build slowly from your very first class.

Where in Hull are the burlesque classes held? +

In private rooms at partner studios in the city centre near Paragon, and down in the Old Town and Fruit Market where the converted warehouses have long suited this sort of thing. Your exact venue is confirmed the moment you book.

How much does a burlesque class in Hull cost? +

Drop-in sessions are £8, with no membership and no contract. Block-booking discounts are offered once a regular schedule is set at your nearest Hull studio.

Can men join, or is it women only? +

Everyone is welcome. Burlesque has always been a broad church, and our Hull classes are open to all genders — the one thing to bring is a sense of fun.

What kind of music will we dance to? +

A mix — brassy big-band swing, slow torch songs and the odd current chart hit, chosen to fit the routine. Titles change term to term so the classes stay fresh.

What should I wear to a class? +

Anything you can move comfortably in. Leggings and a top are ideal; add heels if you have them, though bare feet or trainers are completely fine to start.

Will I ever have to perform in front of people? +

Only if you want to. Plenty of dancers keep it entirely for themselves. There is no pressure to get on a stage — the confidence is the aim, not the performance.

Can we book a burlesque session for a Hull hen do? +

Yes. A private burlesque class is a favourite Hull hen-party option — huge fun, flattering to every group, and it comes to your venue or a central studio. See our burlesque hen party page for details.
