Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Settle Into the Nod

We start on the head-nod and the loose knee-bounce that sits underneath every hip-hop step, and there is no rush to leave it. It doubles as the friendliest way to thaw out a roomful of people who walked in knowing nobody.

10–25 mins

One Move, Its Whole Story

Each week picks a single social dance and teaches it properly — where it came from and roughly when — so you walk away with the genuine article rather than a blurry version half-remembered from a phone screen.

25–40 mins

Build a Short Routine

Those steps get threaded onto a compact piece set to a hip-hop or chart cut, and then we hunt for the accents and the held beats that turn marking-through into something that actually reads as dancing.

40–50 mins

Talk Back to the Track

Low-pressure improv where the only brief is to hear the music and reply to it — nobody marking you, nothing at stake, just room to try a thought and start trusting the timing that is already yours.

50–60 mins

Full-Tempo Run and Wind Down

One last pass at speed to fix the routine in the body for good, then a cool-down that hands your calves and lower back the attention an hour of springing about has more than earned.

About Hip-Hop Classes in Hull

Here hip-hop gets sixty minutes entirely to itself, rather than a passing wave on a quick circuit of the street-dance styles. Our hip-hop classes in Hull give the style the room to breathe: the grooves that power it, the party dances that carry real names and histories, and choreography cut to hip-hop and chart tracks — treated as a subject worth an hour, not a taster crammed in beside four others.

Hull, for what it is worth, knows a thing or two about music that travels. This is the city that produced Mick Ronson — the guitarist and arranger who built the sound of Bowie's Spiders from Mars — along with The Housemartins, The Beautiful South, and Everything But The Girl, whose two halves first met at the University of Hull. It is a place that quietly turns out records the world ends up loving, and that same instinct for a beat walks in with the dancers.

Arriving unable to stitch two moves together is entirely normal — it is where most of the beginner room began. We pull the groove apart until it runs on its own, then stack from there. Our floors sit around the city centre near Queen Victoria Square and Paragon, down in the Fruit Market on Humber Street, or up in the Avenues around Princes Avenue; you find out which is yours once your place is booked. A drop-in costs £8 with nothing to sign, and under-18s have their own supervised, age-banded groups.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Hull?

One Style, a Whole Hour

Instead of brushing past six street styles and shortchanging every one of them, this class plants itself firmly inside hip-hop — a single branch of the family, handed the slow, patient time it needs to properly take root.

A City That Makes Records

From Mick Ronson to The Housemartins, Hull has a habit of sending music out into the wider world. That ear for a groove is stitched into the place, and it turns up in the room every single week.

Under-18s Have Their Own

Younger dancers work in age-split groups led by DBS-checked teachers, and on the under-18 timetable hip-hop is reliably one of the first classes to fill across the city.

Beginners Set the Tone

Turning up with no steps whatsoever is simply the normal way in. The person next to you was almost certainly in exactly that spot a term back, and has long since forgotten the early wobble.

Your Hip-Hop Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

The First Month

Locking Onto the Groove

Where It Begins

These weeks go on the bounce, the rock and a first named dance, chasing an easy feel over the beat before anything else. The sharpness turns up later, and it mostly arrives on its own once the groove is settled.

What to Pack

Joggers or trackies, a top you are happy to sweat through, and flat cushioned trainers. Past that, bring your own look — it is welcome the moment you have found your feet.

Gathering Pace

Stacking the Vocabulary

More to Draw On

A fresh party dance most weeks, plus choreography that keeps tightening up, until the hits and the pauses begin snapping cleanly to the record playing under them.

A First Freestyle

The improv drills edge forward — short solo moments, call-and-response phrases, and the nerve to back your own choices while the track rolls on beneath you.

Several Terms In

Moving Like Yourself

Your Own Accent

Longer choreography and open freestyles where you begin stretching the counts and pressing your own signature into them, rather than shadowing whoever happens to be at the front.

Part of the Room

Relaxed enough to take a turn in the circle, greeted by name at the door — Hull's hip-hop crowd has become somewhere you belong instead of somewhere you drop in on.

The Long Haul

Standing on Your Own

Digging Deeper

Tougher routines, a keener ear for what the music is doing, and freestyle you can fall back on when a song lobs you something you never saw coming.

Where It Leads

Our own showcases and events, or the jams and battles the student crowd keeps ticking over — plenty to enter, or just watch, whenever the mood takes you.

Hip-Hop in Hull FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

So how does this differ from your street dance class? +

Street dance is the whole clan — across a term it cycles through popping, locking, house and breaking. Hip-hop is one member of it, and this hour stays put with that member alone: the grooves, the party dances people can actually name, and choreography set to hip-hop and chart records. A fair few dancers do both, one straight after the other.

I honestly can't dance a step — will I cope? +

You will. The whole thing is assembled up from that basic bounce, one layer at a time, and genuine beginners make up most of the starter room. Rather than sticking out, you would be part of the biggest group on the floor.

Whereabouts in Hull do the classes run? +

Partner studios sit around the city centre near Queen Victoria Square and Paragon, down in the Fruit Market on Humber Street, and up in the Avenues around Princes Avenue, with the under-18 groups reaching a little further out. You hear the exact venue once you have booked, and most are a short, flat walk from Paragon Interchange.

Is a typical night more choreography or more freestyle? +

Both, every week. A usual session hands you a party dance or two and a run of choreography, then some guided improv — short drills with nobody put on the spot. Give it a few weeks and most people are quietly angling to get into the circle.

What should I turn up in? +

Loose kit you can sweat in and flat trainers with a decent cushioned sole. Hip-hop has always set store by personal style, so once it is comfortable and practical, come dressed however feels like you.

What does it cost, and am I committing to anything? +

A drop-in is £8, paid on the door, and you are never tied in. Once your nearest studio locks in a weekly time, discounted multi-week blocks open up next to the single-session rate.

Do you run it for kids and teens as well? +

We do — under-18s have their own age-banded sessions with DBS-checked staff, and hip-hop is among the styles that age group asks for most. Flag the age when you enquire and we will steer you to the right group.

Once it grabs me, is there a hip-hop scene in Hull to step into? +

There is. The University of Hull keeps a young, mixed crowd in town, and the City of Culture year left a livelier events calendar behind it, so jams, battles and showcases surface through the year. Say the word and we will point you at the one worth your time.

Can you bring hip-hop out to a venue of ours? +

Of course — the class packs up and travels. We will set up youth-group sessions, birthday parties and school workshops right across Hull and East Yorkshire, from Hessle and Cottingham out to Beverley, Hedon and Willerby. Just drop your area on the form.
