Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Posture & Warm-Up
Set the soft, tall posture the dance is built on, then loosen the hips, ribs and shoulders. Everything in raqs sharqi grows out of a relaxed, lifted frame.
Isolations
The heart of the class: learning to move the hips alone, then the ribcage, then the shoulders, one part at a time, until each can work without dragging the others along.
Shimmies & Layering
Build the shimmy and start layering — a hip movement over a walk, a shoulder accent over a shimmy — which is where the dance begins to look like itself.
Putting It to Music
String the moves into a short combination set to Arabic rhythms, learning to read the drum and let the accents in the music shape how you move.
Flow & Cool-Down
Dance the combination through more freely, adding a little of your own expression, then a gentle stretch for the hips and lower back to finish.
About Belly Dance Classes in Leeds
Underneath the sequins, belly dance — raqs sharqi to give it its name — is a precise solo art built from isolations, teaching the hips, ribs and shoulders to move independently before combining them again in time with the drum. Our belly dance classes in Leeds teach that real technique, with genuine respect for its Egyptian and Turkish roots and a lot of warmth in how it is passed on.
It is the least self-conscious hour we teach. Age, height and shape are simply not the point — the movement forms itself around whoever turns up, and no part of you is ever on show. That open spirit suits Leeds, and Chapel Allerton in particular, the bohemian little neighbourhood of independents a couple of miles north where a good few of our dancers come from.
Classes run at partner studios in Chapel Allerton and the city centre, the room confirmed once you sign up. Leeds has no tram, but frequent buses link the centre with Chapel Allerton, Headingley and the northern suburbs, and the compact middle of the city is walkable — so getting to class is rarely the hard part of the evening.

Why Choose Belly Dance in Leeds?
Every Body, No Exceptions
Whatever shape walks in is the right one. Curves count in your favour here, age is no obstacle at all, and nobody is measured against a poster on the wall.
Deep Core Strength
The slow shimmies and circles quietly build the deep stabilising muscles a treadmill never touches — strength that surfaces later as poise instead of visible effort.
The Real Technique
This is raqs sharqi taught properly — isolations, layering and genuine Egyptian and Turkish styling — not a vague, sequin-flavoured aerobics class borrowing the name.
£8 to Try It
A drop-in is just £8, listed plainly for you. No membership, no term to commit to; block discounts open up when your nearest studio fixes a weekly evening.
Your Belly Dance Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
First Isolations
Getting Started
You learn to find and move the hips on their own, then the ribcage — the odd, brilliant feeling of one part moving while the rest stays perfectly still.
What to Wear
Leggings or comfy trousers and a fitted top so the teacher can see your hips and ribs. Bare feet or soft socks; a coin scarf is fun but never required.
Layering Up
Building Combinations
Isolations start stacking into shimmies and layered moves, and short sequences begin to feel like actual dancing rather than separate exercises.
Reading the Music
You begin to hear the drum underneath the melody and match your accents to it — the moment the dance stops feeling like counting and starts feeling like listening.
Finding Your Style
Expression
Longer routines and room to add your own flavour, plus the graceful arm and hand work that frames everything the hips are doing.
Confidence
The self-consciousness of the early weeks is long gone, replaced by genuine enjoyment of how the movement feels in your own body.
A Real Raqs Sharqi Dancer
Where You Are
Fluent through the core vocabulary, comfortable improvising to a piece of music you have never heard, and moving with real control.
What Comes Next
Props like veil and finger cymbals, deeper Egyptian or Turkish styling, or performance opportunities if the stage ever tempts you.
Belly Dance in Leeds FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Where in Leeds do the belly dance classes run? +
At partner studios in Chapel Allerton and the city centre, with the exact room sent to you once you sign up. Frequent buses connect the centre with Chapel Allerton and the northern suburbs, and the middle of the city is easily walkable from the station.
How much is a belly dance class in Leeds? +
A drop-in costs eight pounds, shown right here on the page. There is no membership and no commitment to a term; discounted blocks become available once your nearest studio settles into a regular weekly evening.
Can I start belly dance with no experience? +
Yes — it is designed for exactly that. The whole class is taught in small pieces you repeat until they feel natural, the room takes itself lightly, and almost everyone beside you in a beginner session is finding their first isolation too.
What do I wear to belly dance? +
Leggings or comfortable trousers and a fitted top so the teacher can see your hips and ribcage working. Bare feet or grippy socks are ideal. A coin or hip scarf makes the shimmies audible and fun, but you certainly do not need one to begin.
I do not have a dancer's body — is that a problem? +
Not in the slightest. Belly dance genuinely suits every shape and age; the movement adapts to the person, not the other way round, and there is never any pressure to show your midriff. Come as you are — that is the whole spirit of the class.
What actually is raqs sharqi? +
Raqs sharqi is the Egyptian classical form most people mean by 'belly dance' — an elegant solo style built on controlled isolations of the hips, ribs and shoulders, with fluid arms framing it. We teach the real technique and its Egyptian and Turkish styling, not a watered-down version.
Is belly dance good for my core? +
Very. Those slow, controlled movements work the deep abdominal and back muscles that ordinary exercise tends to skip, which is why regulars often notice better posture and a stronger, more comfortable lower back within a couple of months.
Am I too old to take it up? +
Almost certainly not. We teach adults right through to 75, and belly dance is famously kind to the joints while building real core strength and mobility — it is one of the better things you can offer your body as the years go on.
Is it women only? +
Our classes are overwhelmingly women, and many people like that easy, unpressured atmosphere, but the art itself is open to anyone. If you would like to join, note it on the enquiry form and we will point you to the right session.
