Your First Belly Dance Class

Posture and isolations

Class starts by teaching your hips, ribs and shoulders to move independently — the isolations that everything in belly dance is built from.

Layering the shimmy

The famous shimmy gets drilled, then layered over travelling steps — harder than it looks, more addictive than it should be.

Combinations and choreography

Isolations chain into combinations and short choreographies, often building to a drum solo — the style's signature conversation with the tabla.

What Is Belly Dance?

What the West calls belly dance is really raqs sharqi — 'dance of the east' — a family of dances from Egypt and the wider Middle East and North Africa, with folk roots far older than any stage. The golden age of Cairo cinema in the 1940s and 50s made international stars of dancers like Samia Gamal and Tahia Carioca and fixed the glamorous image the world knows.

The technique is all about isolation: moving hips, ribs, shoulders and hands independently, then layering them — a shimmy over a figure-eight over a travelling step. It is precise, meditative work that doubles as one of the best core workouts we teach, and it is famously kind to every age and body type.

Our classes teach proper technique from scratch — no costume required, no midriff on show unless you want it, and a room that consistently rates among the friendliest we run.

Every age, every body, zero prerequisites — and a core workout hiding inside the glamour.

Egyptian Raqs Sharqi

The classical Cairo style — elegant, contained and musical. The foundation most UK classes teach first.

Drum Solo

The showpiece: sharp hip accents and shimmies matched beat-for-beat to a tabla improvisation.

Tribal & Fusion (FCBD/ATS)

The group-improvised American style and its fusion descendants — earthy, hypnotic and cued in real time.

Veil & Props

Veils, finger cymbals (zills) and canes — the prop work that adds theatre once technique settles.

Turkish & Romani Styles

Livelier, playful regional cousins with their own rhythms and attitude.

Belly Dance Fitness

Technique-based conditioning classes — the workout without the performance track.

Belly Dance Facts Worth Repeating

The name is a mistranslation

'Belly dance' comes from the French danse du ventre, a 19th-century Western label — dancers themselves call the art raqs sharqi, 'dance of the east'.

Cairo cinema made it famous

Egypt's golden-age film industry turned dancers like Samia Gamal into international stars — the movies exported the dance worldwide.

The drum leads the dance

In a drum solo, the dancer translates a live tabla improvisation hit-for-hit — the closest dance gets to a spoken conversation.

Built for every body

The technique works with your body rather than against it — which is why classes span teenagers to great-grandmothers, all in the same room.

Belly Dance Questions, Answered

Do I have to bare my midriff?

Absolutely not. Leggings and a t-shirt are standard; most dancers tie a hip scarf on top so the movement is visible. Costumes are strictly for those who eventually want to perform.

Am I the wrong age or shape for this?

No such thing here. Belly dance is one of the few styles where classes genuinely span every generation and body type — the technique celebrates the body you arrive with.

Is it a proper workout?

Quietly, yes. Isolations and shimmies are deep core and glute work, and an hour of layering drills leaves you aching in places gym classes miss.

Do I need to buy props?

No — just yourself. Hip scarves are usually available to borrow, and zills, veils and canes only enter at improver level if the style takes hold of you.
