Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm at the Barre
We start holding the barre through slow pliés and tendus, easing heat into cold ankles and coaxing the turnout awake. The rail carries your balance, which frees your head to concentrate on the shape of each movement.
The Barre Sequence
Then the classic run of exercises — dégagés, ronds de jambe, frappés and grands battements — building the turnout, control and quiet leg strength that everything else in ballet is stacked upon.
Into the Centre
Off the barre now and out onto open floor: the arms learning port de bras, a held adage testing your stillness, and an early balance with nothing but your own two feet to rely on.
Travelling and Jumping
Movement that covers ground — glissades, chassés and a small first jump — taught slowly enough that your coordination always keeps up rather than scrambling to catch the count.
Réverence and Stretch
One last combination gathers the whole hour into a single phrase, the traditional réverence bows the class out, and a generous stretch leaves you longer and warmer than you walked in.
About Ballet Classes in Leicester
Leicester is a fine place to first put on ballet shoes. The city's flagship theatre, Curve — the striking glass Rafael Viñoly building in the Cultural Quarter — has launched major touring productions, and De Montfort Hall carries full-length shows through as well. Our ballet classes in Leicester make no pretence of being a conservatoire; they are honest classical technique starting from the very first position, made for adults who wrote the whole idea off years ago.
Nearly everyone in the beginners' room walked in convinced ballet was something you had to start as a child. It is not. There are no certificates here, no exams, and no interest at all in whether you danced at seven or have never once set foot in a studio. From your twenties to your seventies — we teach adults up to seventy-five — the barre treats you the same and hands back better posture, steadier balance and real command of your own body.
Classes run at partner studios in and around the city centre and the Cultural Quarter, and the precise address arrives by email after you book. If you ever wonder what all this barre work is building towards, Curve and De Montfort Hall put touring ballet on Leicester's stages through the year — reason enough to spend one evening dancing it and another watching it done properly.

Why Choose Ballet in Leicester?
Ballet in a Theatre City
Few places keep the art this close. Curve, the bold Viñoly theatre in the Cultural Quarter, launches touring shows, and De Montfort Hall programmes ballet across the year — the real thing is only ever a short walk down the road.
The Grown-Up Beginners' Room
This is the class we enjoy teaching most. Nobody here is a former dancer coming back — they are simply grown-ups discovering, one week at a time, that starting ballet late was never the closed door they always assumed.
And the Young Ones Too
Children's ballet with DBS-checked teachers grows accurate technique from the first position onward, taken patiently and never rushed toward an early show staged for the relatives' phones.
Eight Pounds, Nothing Buried
A single session is £8 and we say so straight out — no tier to join, no term to sign up for. Reduced blocks of classes come along once your studio locks in its regular weekly evening.
Your Ballet Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Learning the Vocabulary
Getting Started
The feet and arms through the five positions, a first attempt at pliés and tendus, and a handful of French terms that somehow lodge in the memory faster than the steps they name.
What to Wear
Do not go shopping first. Anything you can move and stretch in is right, with a top that lets your shape show; bare feet or socks are ideal early on. Buying proper ballet shoes can wait until you are certain you will keep coming.
Things Begin to Connect
Control Turns Up
The separate exercises start to knit, a wobble becomes a balance you can hold, and rising onto the balls of your feet stops feeling like your ankles are about to stage a walkout.
Quiet Strength
Beneath its calm surface the barre is banking real strength — open rotation, arched insteps, a core switching on. Desk workers usually clock it first as a back that has stopped complaining.
Out Into the Room
Centre Work
The open floor becomes familiar territory: a combination with nothing to hold, a first proper turn, and an upper body that carries itself in a way it plainly could not back in month one.
A New Way of Watching
Ballet on stage changes for you — at De Montfort Hall or Curve you now catch the craft threaded through the show, and the evening gives back far more than it did before.
Genuinely Dancing
Where You Stand
A full class is within reach now, barre through to a gentle allegro, scaled to suit you — and whenever your appetite outgrows the beginners' group, the improvers are ready and waiting.
Choosing a Direction
The path is entirely yours: a graded ladder if targets keep you keen, the slow honest road toward pointe for the truly devoted, or simply a weekly hour you flatly refuse to give up.
Ballet in Leicester FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
I have never danced a single step — can I really begin as an adult? +
Completely, and that is precisely who the beginners' class is for. We start from nothing, the barre keeps you upright while your balance and strength catch up, and the dancers who get somewhere are simply the ones who keep turning up, not the ones who started as toddlers.
Am I too old for ballet? +
Almost certainly not. Our adults run from 17 to 75, and there are few kinder gifts to your posture, balance and bones as the years go by than regular work at the barre. If you have put it off for ages, that is a reason to book now rather than let it drift again.
Will I be pushed onto pointe? +
Only if you go chasing it. Pointe is a far-off option that demands strong ankles and a teacher's explicit blessing, and even then you are free to say no. Most adult dancers stay perfectly happy in soft shoes for good.
How much does a class cost in Leicester? +
A drop-in is eight pounds, and we print the figure right here instead of tucking it behind a sign-up. Nothing to enrol in, nothing to sign away; once your studio fixes a steady weekly slot, cheaper blocks open up for the regulars.
Whereabouts in Leicester do the classes happen? +
At partner studios in and around the city centre and the Cultural Quarter, with the room confirmed once you have booked. You will be a short walk from the railway station and the buses at St Margaret's, and the centre is small enough to reach on foot without wrestling a car through the one-way system.
What should I put on for a first class? +
Leggings or joggers you can bend and stretch in, plus a top that is not too loose so your alignment shows. There is no need for a leotard. Start in socks or bare feet; ballet shoes are cheap enough, but there is no rush to buy any until you are sure the class has you.
Is this the school of a professional ballet company? +
No — we are independent, with no membership rung to climb before you are allowed in. What surrounds you instead is Leicester's real theatre life: touring ballet at Curve and De Montfort Hall whenever you fancy watching the finished article performed.
Do men come to class? +
Regularly, and from the very first week. The male classical role carries its own demands — elevation, lifts, partnering — and every adult studio we run is mixed as a matter of course, with no separating by sex.
Does ballet actually count as exercise? +
Far more than its poise lets on. It goes easy on the joints while forging a genuine core, strong supple feet and dependable balance — exactly why physios and strength coaches borrow barre drills for their own clients. Muscles you had forgotten about will introduce themselves.
