Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Warm-Up & Isolations

Head, ribcage and hips moving one at a time — the control that makes jazz look sharp — drilled while the body warms right through.

10–25 mins

Across the Floor

Travelling steps — chassés, pas de bourrée, kicks and leaps — sent corner to corner so movement learns to eat up space.

25–40 mins

Turns & Technique

Spotting and pirouettes, then the fine details that separate a clean line from a nearly-clean one.

40–50 mins

The Combination

A short performance phrase with attitude built in, set to something from a show or the charts.

50–60 mins

Perform & Stretch

Run the combo full-out, playing to the back row, then a long stretch to bank the flexibility you have earned.

About Jazz Classes in Leicester

Leicester punches well above its size on a stage. Curve — the glass, turned-inside-out theatre in the Cultural Quarter — does not just receive touring musicals, it builds them: shows have gone out on national tour straight from this stage. Add De Montfort Hall down by Victoria Park and there is serious performing on your doorstep. Jazz is the technique most of it runs on, and our jazz dance classes in Leicester teach the genuine article.

That means isolations, turns, kicks and long travelling lines, with performing baked in rather than bolted on. You learn to project a step to the furthest seat, to hold an attitude, to sell a single moment. It is theatrical by design — the discipline behind musical-theatre, commercial and competition dance alike.

Sessions run from partner studios in the city centre and the Cultural Quarter, minutes from Curve itself, with the address confirmed when you book. The station is a short walk, Highcross holds over three thousand cars, and the pedestrian Lanes mean the last stretch is always on foot.

Why Choose Jazz in Leicester?

Built for the Stage

This is the vocabulary touring shows are choreographed in — learn it in the city where those tours are actually made.

It Unlocks the Rest

Jazz technique quietly improves your commercial, your heels and your musical-theatre — the base coat under a lot of other styles.

Stretch and Strength Included

Kicks, controlled falls and held lines build flexibility and core power without a separate trip to the gym.

Performing From Week One

Nobody hides at the back. Projecting to an audience is treated as a skill you practise, not a talent you are born with.

Your Jazz Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1–4

Clean Isolations

Getting Started

Isolations, a warm-up you will keep for years, and a first short combination to hang it all on.

What to Wear

Fitted, stretchy kit you can see your lines in. Bare feet or jazz shoes both fine to begin — we will advise on the right pair.

Months 2–3

The Turns Land

Spinning

Spotting clicks and single pirouettes stop being a lottery, which changes how the whole combination feels.

Dynamics

Sharp versus smooth, sudden versus sustained — jazz starts to have light and shade.

Months 4–6

Lines and Attitude

Performance Quality

The strength shows: higher kicks, cleaner extensions, and combinations that read from the back of a hall.

Musicality

You stop counting and start phrasing, letting the music decide where the accents fall.

Months 6+

Stage-Ready

Confident Performer

Longer routines, quick pick-up, and the nerve to actually perform them for people.

What Comes Next

Musical-theatre auditions, our other classes, or a seat at Curve watching the touring show with new eyes.

Jazz in Leicester FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

I am a complete beginner — is jazz too advanced to start with? +

Not at all — jazz is a fine place to begin. We start with the warm-up, basic isolations and a short combination, teaching the vocabulary from scratch. Plenty of adults take their very first dance class in this room.

Do I need ballet training first? +

No. Ballet helps, as it does with most things, but it is absolutely not a prerequisite. We teach the turnout, control and lines you need directly, so you can walk into jazz with no previous training.

Where in Leicester are the jazz classes? +

Partner studios in the city centre and the Cultural Quarter, a few minutes from Curve, with the exact one sent when you book. The station is a short walk and Highcross parking is close if you drive.

What do I wear, and do I need jazz shoes? +

Fitted, stretchy clothing you can see your lines in — leggings and a close top are ideal. Bare feet or jazz shoes are both fine to begin, and we will point you to the right shoe before you need one.

I am not flexible — does that count me out? +

Not remotely. Flexibility is something the class builds, not something you turn up with. The kicks and stretches do the work over weeks, and you will be surprised how quickly the range arrives.

How is jazz different from contemporary? +

Jazz is sharp, up and outward — turns, kicks, attitude, built for the stage and the front row. Contemporary is more grounded and internal, closer to the floor. They share roots but ask different things of your body.

What does a jazz class in Leicester cost? +

Drop-in jazz classes are £8, with no membership or contract. Once the regular Leicester timetable settles at your nearest studio, discounted block bookings will be offered as well.

I would be shy about performing — is that handled? +

It is, deliberately. Performing is treated as a skill we practise a little every week — projecting, holding a look — so confidence builds gradually. Nobody is shoved to the front before they are ready.

Could this lead to auditions or the stage? +

It can. Jazz is the base technique behind musical-theatre and commercial work, so it opens doors to auditions and shows. Or it can stay a brilliant hour a week — plenty of dancers keep it exactly that.
