Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–8 min

Warm and align

We build a little warmth through the ankles and spine, roll gently down and back up, and find a neutral, lifted posture before a single step is asked of you.

8–20 min

At the barre

Holding the barre for support, you meet pliés and tendus and learn the five positions of the feet, letting the hardware take the balance while you learn the shapes.

20–35 min

Into the centre

The same moves come away from the barre with nothing to hold, adding the arms — port de bras — so balance and line begin to look after themselves.

35–50 min

Across the floor

A simple travelling step or a chassé takes you through the space, which is where ballet stops being static and starts to feel like dancing.

50–60 min

A short sequence

We link a handful of steps to music into a calm little enchaînement, so you finish having danced a phrase rather than only practised parts.

About Ballet Classes in Newport

Ballet is the grammar underneath almost every other stage dance — turnout from the hips, a lifted spine, and five positions that quietly reorganise the way you carry yourself. Our Newport beginner class treats it as something an adult can pick up from scratch: slow, precise and unhurried, built at the barre first so you always have something to hold while the shapes become familiar.

Newport happens to carry a professional ballet heartbeat that few cities its size can claim. Ballet Cymru, the national ballet company of Wales, is based right here at its Rogerstone studios and describes what it makes as outstanding dance made in Newport. We are not that company and hold no connection to it — but the point is that this is a city where serious ballet genuinely lives, and our class is simply the adult beginner on-ramp: the gentle place you begin if watching dance of that calibre made you quietly want to try it yourself.

We teach in a central room near Commercial Street and Friars Walk, with a second riverside space on the Maindee side of the Usk, so wherever you travel in from — Malpas, Bettws, Pill, Rogerstone or out toward Caerleon — one of the two is a straightforward trip. Your exact studio is confirmed when you book.

Why Choose Ballet in Newport?

Posture you take home

The lift and alignment you drill at the barre quietly follow you off the floor, into how you sit at a desk and stand in a queue.

Slow, never rushed

Ballet rewards control over speed, so a beginner is given the time to get each position honestly right rather than skated over.

Adults, from zero

We assume no childhood training and no dance past whatsoever — the class is built for people meeting the barre for the first time.

One flat £8

A single price on the door, no membership and no term to pay for in advance — come for a week and see how it sits with you.

Your Ballet Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

01

First few weeks

Standing tall

You find a lifted, neutral posture and stop collapsing through the middle, which alone changes how the rest of the class feels.

The five positions

The feet and arm positions become a vocabulary you recognise on sight, so instructions stop sounding like a foreign language.

02

Confidence at the barre

Pliés and tendus

The bend-and-stretch foundations grow controlled and even, and your ankles and knees start to trust the movement.

Balance without holding

You let go of the barre for a beat, then two, and discover the balance was quietly building the whole time.

03

Into the centre

Port de bras

The arms stop being an afterthought and begin to carry line, which is what makes even a simple move read as ballet.

Small jumps

Gentle sautés get added, teaching your legs to spring and land softly without any jarring or thud.

04

Moving and musical

Travelling steps

Chassés and glides take you across the floor, and the class stops being fixed on one spot.

Dancing a phrase

You link steps to the music into a short sequence, which is the moment ballet finally clicks into feeling like dance.

Ballet in Newport FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I need any dance background to start? +

None at all. The beginner class is written for adults who have never taken a ballet lesson, so we start at the barre with the very first position and build slowly from there.

Am I too old to take up ballet? +

No. This is an adult class for ages seventeen to seventy-five, and plenty of people begin ballet in their thirties, forties, fifties and well beyond. Nobody here is chasing a stage career — it is for the pleasure and the posture.

I am not flexible — is that a problem? +

Not remotely. Flexibility is something ballet slowly gives you, not a ticket you need at the door. We work within whatever range you arrive with and it opens up over the weeks on its own.

What should I wear? +

Fitted, stretchy clothing you can move and be seen to move in — leggings and a close top are ideal. Thick socks or soft ballet shoes are fine; there is no tutu and no dress code beyond being able to point your feet.

Whereabouts in Newport are the classes held? +

We use a central studio near Commercial Street and Friars Walk, plus a riverside room on the Maindee side of the Usk. The exact venue is confirmed when you book your place.

Isn't Newport home to a professional ballet company? +

It is — Ballet Cymru, the national ballet company of Wales, is based in the city at its Rogerstone studios. We are not affiliated with them in any way. Our class is a separate thing entirely: the gentle adult beginner starting point, not the professional route.

How do I get there and where do I park? +

Newport (South Wales) station sits a short walk from the centre, and Friars Walk has parking for an evening class. There is no tram or metro in the city. If there is a fixture at nearby Rodney Parade, set off a touch earlier to skirt the matchday traffic.

How much is a class? +

A flat £8, handed over on the night. No membership, no joining fee and no block of lessons to buy up front — you simply pay for the weeks you come along.

How do I book my first class? +

Fill in the form on this page with your name and a contact number, and we will reply within a working day with the next beginner date, the studio and how to find it.
