Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Ankles loose
Tap is all ankle and quick weight changes, so we warm the feet, ankles and calves properly before any sound is made. Loose ankles are fast ankles.
The core sounds
You meet the building blocks — the shuffle, the tap, the step and the ball-change — one clean sound at a time, because clarity always beats speed.
Weight and rhythm
We string the sounds into simple rhythms and get your weight moving cleanly between feet, which is where tap starts to feel like music you are making.
A short break
A little combination — the tap equivalent of a phrase — comes together, so you have a proper piece of rhythm rather than a set of isolated steps.
Run it to music
We take the combination up to a track and run it, so the hour ends with you tapping in time to a song rather than counting in silence.
About Tap Classes in Newport
Tap is the one dance where you are also the instrument. Every step makes a sound, so learning it is really learning to play rhythm with your feet — which is exactly why it is so satisfying and, quietly, such good training for the brain. These beginners' tap classes in Newport start from the core sounds and build clean, musical rhythms at a pace that lets everyone actually hear what they are doing.
Newport punches above its weight for dance. Ballet Cymru, the national professional ballet company, is based right here and describes what it does as work made in Newport — a genuinely unusual level of dance identity for a city this size. Tap sits happily inside that heritage: unpretentious, rhythmic and open to anyone, it is dance you can hear as much as see.
This is an instructor-led beginners' class rather than a slot in some big existing tap circuit, and we like it that way — small, clear and built around the sound. It runs in studios near Commercial Street and the Riverfront, comes to private and hen groups across Newport and Gwent, and stays a flat 8 pounds on the night with nothing to sign and no experience assumed.

Why Choose Tap in Newport?
You make the music
In tap your feet are the instrument, so you are learning rhythm and dance at once — and hearing your own progress is oddly addictive.
Sharp for the head
Coordinating sound, weight and timing is proper mental exercise; regular tappers often say it leaves them noticeably sharper.
Clarity over speed
We chase clean, honest sounds before any speed, so you build rhythm you can actually hear rather than a blur of noise.
No experience needed
Nobody expects you to arrive able to tap. We start from single sounds and grow real rhythms from there, first session included.
Your Tap Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
First weeks — The sounds
One clean sound
You learn the core sounds — shuffle, tap, step, ball-change — one at a time, chasing clarity before anything quick.
Loosening the ankle
The ankle stiffness that makes tap feel impossible eases early, and the sounds get lighter as it does.
Building rhythm
Stringing it together
Single sounds join into simple rhythms, and suddenly you are making phrases rather than a scatter of isolated taps.
Weight on the move
Clean weight changes between feet arrive, which is what stops rhythms falling apart halfway through.
Dancing it
A real combination
A short break or combination comes together, so you can hold a proper piece of tap rather than a handful of steps.
In time with music
Running it to a track teaches you to sit your rhythm inside a song, which is where tap properly comes alive.
Going further
A weekly habit
Most settle into one class a week as speed, clarity and repertoire all climb together.
Where it leads
Toward faster combinations, cleaner sounds and rhythms you would never have believed on your first, clattery night.
Tap in Newport FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need tap shoes to start? +
Not for a first class — any hard-soled shoe will do to try it. Once you are hooked, proper tap shoes are inexpensive, and we will point you to the right sort.
How much is it? +
8 pounds flat, paid on the night. No membership, no block booking and no contract — you drop in whenever the week allows.
Do I need any experience? +
None at all. We start from single sounds and build rhythms gradually, so a complete beginner is exactly who these classes in Newport are for.
What should I wear? +
Comfortable clothes you can move in and, to begin, any hard-soled shoe. Save the trainers for another class — soft soles make no sound, and no sound means no tap.
Where in Newport is it held? +
In studios near Commercial Street and the Riverfront, with the exact room confirmed when you book. Private and hen groups we cover across Newport and Gwent.
Is tap a good workout? +
Better than it looks. It keeps your feet and calves working non-stop and, because it doubles as rhythm training, your brain gets a session too.
What ages come along? +
Broadly 17 to 75. Because tap rewards timing and clarity rather than athleticism, it suits a genuinely wide spread of ages sharing the same beginners' room.
Has the class started yet? +
The Newport tap group is forming now, so the day and venue are being finalised. Send an enquiry and we will pass on the go-live dates as soon as they are set.
How do I book? +
Fill in the form on this page and we will reply with current class times, the studio location and how to reserve your place.
