Dance Classes in Portsmouth
Twenty Dance Classes Across Portsmouth
First-Timers Fill the Floor
In most sessions the newcomers outnumber everyone else, so nobody feels watched — each style opens on a real starter level that takes nothing for granted. Anyone with a bit behind them steps up to improver classes led by working performers. Sorting a hen do too? The same choreographers handle both, booked in one go.
Timed for an Island-City Week
Weeknight and weekend classes sit around Southsea, the city centre and Somerstown, most a short walk or quick First bus from Portsmouth & Southsea station — an after-work session works whichever corner of the island you set off from. Come once or book a block to pay less. Wedding on the horizon? Our wedding dance lessons use the same rooms.
Eight Pounds, No Contract
Every class is £8, and that figure holds whether you drop in once or take a four-week block — no membership, no sign-up fee, nothing quietly renewing in the background. Try one style this week and something completely different the next. Ready to begin? Get in touch.
Pick Your Style
Twenty styles taught right across Portsea Island — from Southsea studios through the city centre to Somerstown — every one open to complete beginners and led by a working pro.
Bachata
Slow-quick Dominican steps, a tap and a hip that lands on the fourth beat — the softest way onto Portsmouth's Latin social nights, once you have found a night that is genuinely running.
Bachata Classes
Ballet
Barre work, port de bras and centre practice handed down across centuries — and the grown-up who never took a childhood class is exactly who our beginner room is built for.
Ballet Classes
Ballroom
Waltz, foxtrot and a quickstep with a frame that actually holds — Portsmouth's own academies keep partner dance alive, and it pays you back on every wedding floor for life.
Ballroom Classes
Belly Dance
Coin-belt shimmies, slow hip drops and the fine isolations of raqs sharqi — open to every age and shape, and quietly the hardest core workout on the board.
Belly Dance Classes
Bollywood
Film-song hooks, bhangra shoulders and hands that tell the story — pure beaming cardio, taught step by step by our own instructor rather than pinned to any one festival.
Bollywood Classes
Burlesque
Slow struts, an arched glance and full showgirl nerve — and because it always gets asked, every layer stays on; only the confidence leaves changed.
Burlesque Classes
Commercial
Chart and music-video choreography sharpened until it reads on camera — the same current, camera-ready energy that fills Southsea Common when Victorious takes over each August.
Commercial Classes
Contemporary
Release, floor spirals and open improvisation — searching, physical movement that speaks where words give up, started from the very first day.
Contemporary Classes
Flamenco
Heels cracking the boards, palmas snapping the beat and a spine held proud — flamenco runs on full commitment and exposes anyone trying to coast.
Flamenco Classes
Heels
Attitude, body rolls and struts with bite — start in trainers if you like, because the swagger turns up long before the heels ever need to.
Heels Classes
Hip-Hop
Grooves, rocks and the party dances the culture grew out of — feel and timing first, tricks much later, taught in its own right the way Portsmouth specialists like Templar Street Dance treat it.
Hip-Hop Classes
Irish Dancing
Quick reels and jigs fired off below the waist while the arms stay locked at your sides — no Irish roots required, just calves braced for a genuine shock.
Irish Dancing Classes
Jazz
Sharp kicks, spotted turns and long stretched stage lines — the grammar behind nearly every touring show that lands at the New Theatre Royal or King's Theatre.
Jazz Classes
K-Pop
Knife-clean point choreography and formation switches lifted straight off the videos — broken down section by section and filmed the moment it lands, run by our own teacher rather than any student society.
K-Pop Classes
Line Dancing
Heel digs, grapevines and a whole row moving as one — never a partner in sight, and a playlist that swings from old Nashville to this year's chart.
Line Dancing Classes
Pole Dance
Spins, climbs and your first clean invert, with the strength built in the room rather than asked for at the door — held at a dedicated pole studio, so pack grippy shorts and skip the body lotion.
Pole Dance Classes
Salsa
Cuban timing on the clave and partners passing round the room so nobody sits out — the gentlest route onto Portsmouth's Latin social scene, once you have tracked down a night that is actually on.
Salsa Classes
Street Dance
Popping, locking, breaking and house pulled into one all-styles class led by dancers who still battle for it — the session that keeps Portsmouth's street scene, from Templar Street Dance to Funk Format in Somerstown, pulling together.
Street Dance Classes
Tango
A close embrace, the charged pause between steps and a walk that means business — Argentine tango takes its time, and we open a first night slowly so nobody feels rushed.
Tango Classes
Tap
Shuffles, flaps and time steps stacked until your feet carry the whole rhythm — shoes are there to borrow on the night, so you spend nothing before you know it has you.

Dance Classes in Portsmouth FAQ
The things people ask us before booking a first class in Portsmouth.
How much does a dance class in Portsmouth cost?
Every class is a flat £8 — the same price for a one-off drop-in or a booked four-week block. There are no joining fees and nothing to lock into, so you can try a style, see how it suits you and stop or switch whenever you like.
Which part of Portsmouth do the classes run in?
That comes down to which style you pick. Grown-up classes cluster in Southsea and the city centre, an easy walk or short bus hop from Portsmouth & Southsea station, and children's groups sit nearer home in places like Fratton, North End and Cosham. Portsea Island has no tram or metro, so First and Stagecoach buses — or a brief taxi — knit the edges together, and the page for your chosen style lists exactly where it meets.
Is it easy to park near a Portsmouth class?
Portsea Island is compact but tight for parking, so for a central or Southsea class the train into Portsmouth & Southsea or a bus is usually simpler than the car. Driving makes more sense for the Cosham, Drayton and Portchester classes, and the Tipner Park & Ride is there for city-centre trips — check its live times before you rely on it for an evening session.
I have not danced since school — will I cope in an adult class?
You will more than cope — that is the whole point of a beginner level. In every style the teacher starts from zero and assumes no background at all, and in Portsmouth the first-timer sessions, salsa and street and ballet most of all, draw the largest fresh intakes term after term.
Do I need to bring a partner for salsa or ballroom?
No need. The partner styles here — salsa, bachata, ballroom, tango — all swap dancers round the floor as a matter of course, so arriving solo is the norm, not the exception. Bring someone and keep them if you like, or fold into the rotation and partner half the room by the end.
