Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm and Loose
A moving warm-up that wakes the joints and gets the groove going, so the body is ready to snap into shapes without pulling anything on the first big hit.
Groove With the Track
Before the routine, we sit inside the song — catching the accents, the drops and the little pockets in the beat that the choreography will later hang off.
This Week's Eight-Counts
The main routine, broken down slowly and stacked eight counts at a time. You learn the shapes clean first; speed and sharpness come once the order sticks.
Add the Attitude
The same steps again, now with the texture that makes commercial read on screen — the pauses, the level changes, the face. This is the part that turns steps into a performance.
Full-Out, Like a Take
We run the whole thing at performance energy a few times, sometimes to a phone on a tripod, then cool down. Watching it back is where the biggest jumps happen.
About Commercial Classes in Reading
Commercial is the choreography pop hangs its visuals on — the routine in a chart video, the number that opens an arena tour, the tight unison behind a televised slot. It borrows from hip-hop, jazz and street and polishes the lot for the camera, so where you aim your energy matters as much as where you put your feet.
Reading has a genuine ecosystem to plug into. Urban Stylez, the town's award-winning street crew, runs hip-hop, popping, locking, house and breaking with proper crews and showcases, and every August Reading Festival turns Richfield Avenue into one of the country's biggest stages. There is a real, filmable appetite here, and a University of Reading crowd to match.
Classes run at partner studios around the town centre, an easy walk from Reading station, with the exact venue confirmed once you book. Complete beginners are the norm — a good chunk of the material is already lodged in your head from years of watching it, so the early weeks feel more like remembering than learning.

Why Choose Commercial in Reading?
A Route Into the Crew Scene
Commercial is the on-ramp to dancing in a group. Reading has real crews and showcases through outfits like Urban Stylez, so there is somewhere for this to lead beyond the weekly class if you want it.
Your Phone Is a Teacher
Filming a run and watching it back is the fastest way to improve — you spot the timing gap or the lazy arm instantly. We build that habit in class so your own footage does half the coaching.
You Learn to Hear a Track
Half of commercial is musicality — catching the accents, drops and silences a routine plays with. Train that ear and every style you touch afterwards gets sharper, not just this one.
Perform, Don't Just Dance
The style demands projection — dancing outward to a lens or a back row instead of inward to a mirror. That knack of filling a space carries into plenty of rooms that have no music in them at all.
Your Commercial Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Catch the Count
Getting Started
You learn to pick up short pieces of choreography and hold the order in your head. Recognising counts and copying shapes cleanly is the whole job this month.
What to Wear
Trainers with a bit of cushioning and clothes you can sweat in. Layers help — you will warm up fast — and a full water bottle is non-negotiable.
Add the Flavour
Texture and Dynamics
The steps stop being a list and start having attitude — hits landing on the beat, pauses used on purpose, the swagger that makes commercial look like commercial.
Picking Up Faster
Learning choreography quickly is a trainable skill, and by now you feel it sharpening — routines that felt impossible in week one go in over a couple of run-throughs.
Perform, Don't Just Dance
Projection
The focus shifts from remembering the routine to selling it — facing front, dancing to the camera, and holding energy through a whole number rather than fading halfway.
Bigger Pieces
Routines get longer and the transitions trickier, closer to what an actual video or stage set would ask of you.
Crew-Ready
Sharp and Consistent
You hit clean under pressure, stay tight in unison and pick choreography up at pace — the toolkit a group or a filmed piece actually needs.
What Comes Next
Reading's crews, showcases and open auditions are the obvious next step, and your teacher can point you toward the ones worth your time.
Commercial in Reading FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
I've never done street or commercial — can I keep up? +
Yes, and you are in the majority. Classes start with beginners in mind and break every routine down slowly. It helps that you have unknowingly copied a lot of this off screens for years, so the first weeks feel more familiar than you expect.
How is commercial different from an Urban Stylez street class? +
Street and hip-hop, like the ones Urban Stylez specialise in, dig into foundations, freestyle and culture. Commercial is the polished, camera-facing end — pop routines built to look sharp on film and stage. They overlap, and plenty of dancers do both.
What should I wear and bring? +
Comfortable trainers with cushioning, clothes you can move and sweat in, and layers you can peel off as you warm up. Bring water and, if you like, a phone to film yourself — it is one of the best learning tools going.
Where in Reading are the commercial classes held? +
At partner studios around the town centre, a short walk from Reading station and well served by the bus network. We confirm the exact venue when you book, and pick spaces that are easy to reach without a car.
What does a commercial class in Reading cost? +
£8 per drop-in session — turn up, pay, dance, no contract. Discounted blocks for anyone who wants to commit to a run of weeks will be offered once the regular Reading schedule is confirmed.
What kind of songs will we dance to? +
Current chart pop, R&B and the kind of tracks you would hear behind a music video or tour set, rotated week to week so the choreography stays fresh. If a particular artist or song is having a moment, expect it to turn up.
Do we get filmed in class? +
Sometimes, and always with the room's say-so — a phone on a tripod for a full-out run so you can watch it back. It is optional, it is never posted anywhere without permission, and it genuinely speeds up your progress.
Where could I perform once I'm ready? +
Reading has a live crew and showcase scene — Urban Stylez and others run performance groups and events — and our own showcases give you a low-pressure first stage. Your teacher will nudge you toward whatever suits your level.
Can we book a commercial class for a hen or group in Reading? +
Yes — a private commercial session makes a brilliant group or hen booking. Take a look at our commercial hen party option, send over your numbers and a rough date, and we will build a routine to fit the group.
