Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Ease Into the Beat
The first stretch is loose and unhurried, shoulders and hips waking up over a track, so the rhythm has soaked in a little before anyone teaches a single thing.
The Bounce Comes First
Before any moves at all, we drill the springy, weighted groove that every hip-hop step rides on — small to begin with, repeated until it feels less like an exercise and more like how you naturally stand to music.
One Party Dance, Then a Run
A single classic social dance is unpacked each session, its origins included, then slotted into a brief bit of choreography set to something you will find familiar.
Talk Back in Movement
Playful call-and-response drills get you catching a beat and firing something back at it, so the confidence to move without a script grows quietly in the background.
Optional Circle, Proper Stretch
A relaxed ring forms for whoever wants a turn in the spotlight — nobody is pushed toward it — and then we stretch the hour right out.
About Hip-Hop Classes in Southend-on-Sea
There is a muddle worth clearing up: hip-hop and street dance are not interchangeable. Street dance is a catch-all class that cycles through locking, popping, breaking and house. Hip-hop is one specific thing sitting inside that mix — bounce-led grooves, the named social dances, and choreography built on records — and here it gets the whole sixty minutes rather than a rotating slice of them.
We would rather be honest about the town than oversell it. The bulk of Southend's street and hip-hop activity sits with WD Studios on Aviation Way, backed by Absolute Arts on Station Road and stage schools like Tina Phelps. What is missing is a straightforward grown-ups' groove session, and that is the one we run, from a room near the High Street. No grand claims about a scene — just a friendly weekly hour.
You can walk in with nothing. A session costs £8 on the day, with no membership and no block to commit to. Two railway lines reach the town — Southend Central onto the High Street, Southend Victoria a little to the north — and with no Underground or tram it is trains, buses and the A127 that get you in. Teenagers and children have their own supervised, age-split classes away from the adult hour.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Southend-on-Sea?
Sixty Minutes, One Thing
Instead of a class that darts across the whole street spectrum, this one holds on hip-hop alone — the groove, the party dances, the choreography — and that single focus is what makes it stick.
No Overselling Here
The adult hip-hop crowd in Southend is small and we would sooner admit it than pretend otherwise, pointing you to WD Studios or Absolute Arts if the wider street and youth timetable is what you are after.
History in Every Move
Each social dance turns up with its backstory attached, so what you build is a living catalogue of steps and where they came from, not one routine memorised off a screen.
Under-18s, Separate Classes
Kids and teens have their own DBS-checked, age-grouped sessions running clear of the adult hour — flag the age on the form and we will slot them where they belong.
Your Hip-Hop Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Meet the Groove
Where You Begin
Basic bounces, a rock or two, and a first social dance. The aim this early is feel and timing, not polish or sharp edges.
Kit for Day One
Something loose to move in and flat trainers with a bit of padding. A water bottle, and no concern at all about looking the part yet.
Fill the Toolkit
More to Draw On
Additional party dances and grooves arrive, plus the counting that lets you thread a few of them into longer sequences.
Into Freestyle
Gentle improvisation exercises coax you into moving unscripted — the beating heart of hip-hop, once the steps stop being the whole story.
Find the Pocket
Reading the Track
You start hearing the snare and the bassline and placing moves onto them, so the dance looks deliberate rather than approximate.
Bigger Routines
Longer choreography gathers a stretch of weeks into a single piece you can run cleanly from start to end.
Sound Like You
Your Signature
The steps begin turning into something distinctly yours, rather than a copy of whoever happens to lead from the front.
The Next Step
Guest workshops, open floors around the estuary, or branching into the street and commercial classes when you fancy it.
Hip-Hop in Southend-on-Sea FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
How does this differ from your street dance class in Southend? +
Street dance is the umbrella session: locking, popping, breaking and house, swapped around week to week. Hip-hop pulls out one strand of that and stays with it for the full hour — the groove, the party dances, the record-based choreography. Some dancers do both; many are perfectly happy on just this one.
Does Southend really have a hip-hop scene? +
For adults, only a modest one, and we would rather be straight with you. WD Studios on Aviation Way leads the local street and hip-hop provision, with Absolute Arts and Tina Phelps' school busy on the younger side, but a dedicated adult hour barely exists — hence ours. You will not hear us calling Southend a hip-hop capital.
Where do the classes actually run? +
Partner studios close to the High Street, walkable from Southend Central and a short bus or stroll from Southend Victoria. With no tram or metro in the town, we deliberately choose rooms near stops and parking, and confirm the precise venue once you have a place.
What is the cost of a class? +
It is eight pounds, paid the day you turn up. Nothing to join, no upfront block and no contract — you simply come on the weeks your diary allows and pay for each of those, and nothing for the rest.
I have never danced in my life — is that a problem? +
Not remotely. Every beginners' hour opens on the simplest groove there is and grows from that, and most of the room arrived exactly as green as you. Newcomers blend straight in, for the plain reason that newcomers are the majority.
Do you actually teach foundations, or is it copy-the-video? +
Foundations first, every time. Each party dance is broken into its parts, named, and reassembled, and only then does it feed the choreography — so the movement makes proper sense in your body instead of being mimicked off a phone.
What do I wear? +
Anything you can move freely in; a t-shirt and joggers are perfect, with flat, slightly cushioned trainers. Self-expression is part of the whole thing, so beyond comfy and flat, dress however feels like you.
Is this just your commercial or heels class under another name? +
No. Commercial is after that music-video gloss, and heels is a distinct craft danced in a heel. This is groove and street-born social dance. They coexist happily on the timetable, but each has its own hour and its own focus.
Do you teach children and teenagers as well? +
Yes — younger dancers and teens have age-banded classes beside the adult one, run by DBS-checked staff. Tick the appropriate age on the enquiry form and we will direct you to the right session.
