Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Sink Into the Groove
We open by shaking off stiffness and finding the pulse that sits under every street style — knees loose, weight low — until the whole room is bouncing on the same beat.
One Style, Up Close
Rather than sprint through everything, a single foundation leads the class — locking one week, popping, breaking or house the next — held long enough to actually stay with you.
Build the Routine
That week's moves get bolted into a compact sequence over a track with some weight to it, the point where drilling quietly tips over into real dancing.
No Set Steps
Short bursts of guided freestyle, with an optional face-off for the brave, easing you toward moving with no plan laid out in front of you.
The Circle, Then Down
A cypher no one is shoved into — jump in or clap from the rim — followed by a proper stretch to unwind the hour's work.
About Street Dance Classes in Southend-on-Sea
Straight talking on street in Southend: the strength is in the schools and studios rather than a roaring adult battle circuit, and it does no one any favours to pretend otherwise. WD Studios has taught street, hip-hop and breakdance off Aviation Way since 1991, and Absolute Arts runs classes from Station Road — real local footing to build on. Whoever leads your session dances for a living, and it shows.
The classes cycle through the full street kit — weeks on locking, on popping, on breaking, on house — because the aim is to speak the whole language, not polish one party piece. Our separate hip-hop sessions go the other way, digging into hip-hop's own grooves, social steps and choreography. If you want an image that fits, a tight crew snapping into formation carries the same restless push-and-pull as the estuary tide turning along the seafront.
Every age group trains on its own — kids, teens and adults in separate rooms, each led by a DBS-checked professional. Our spaces sit central near the High Street and seafront, a short walk from Southend Central on the c2c line; there is no tram, so buses or the car bring you in. Drop-ins are £8, and our mobile team carries workshops out to schools and parties across Southend and south Essex.

Why Choose Street Dance in Southend-on-Sea?
Led by People Who Dance
Your teachers come out of the working dance world — they properly lock, pop and break themselves, and pass on only the moves they actually lean on in their own dancing.
The Full Spread
Locking, popping, breaking, house — the term travels through the lot, so you meet the whole width of street before deciding which lane pulls at you hardest.
Room for Every Age
Separate kids' and teens' groups sit alongside the adult class, all steered by DBS-checked professionals — reliably some of the busiest sessions on our Southend books.
Out Across South Essex
The mobile crew takes street sessions into schools, youth clubs and birthday parties right around Southend and beyond — Leigh, Rayleigh, Rochford, Shoeburyness. Drop a postcode on the form.
Your Street Dance Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Getting the Bounce
Starting Out
Grooves, bounce and your first taste of locking and top rock. The target is rhythm and a bit of nerve, never a polished finish.
What to Wear
Joggers or trackies, a loose tee and flat, cushioned trainers. Comfort comes first; your own style is a welcome bonus.
Trying the Styles
Foundations
Further into locking, popping, house and breaking — feeling out what each one asks of your body and which of them clicks.
First Freestyle
Guided improvising that slowly grows the nerve to move without counting every step out beforehand in your head.
Your Own Flavour
Finding a Voice
Longer freestyles and tougher choreography, blending the styles into movement that is starting to look distinctly like yours.
Fitting In
At ease in the cypher and part of the furniture — street is a culture you get folded into, not just a class you attend.
In the Scene
Advanced Work
Versatile across the styles, steady in a battle, and stitching together combinations that are genuinely your own invention.
Where Next
Regional jams and battles, our own events, or going deep on the single style that ended up choosing you.
Street Dance in Southend-on-Sea FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need any experience to start street dance? +
Zero. The first thing anyone learns is the bounce — the loose rock every street style rides on — and it builds from that point. Our starter classes are full of people who have genuinely never tried it, so walking in cold is completely ordinary.
Honestly, is Southend any good for street dance? +
It is solid rather than showy, and we would rather be straight about that. WD Studios has run street, hip-hop and breakdance off Aviation Way since 1991, and Absolute Arts teaches from Station Road. It is a real, working local scene, and we drop you into it rather than off to one side.
What is the difference between this and the hip-hop class? +
Street dance is the broad umbrella; hip-hop is one section under it. Here we rotate the whole lot — locking, popping, breaking, house — while the hip-hop class keeps its focus on hip-hop alone: its bounce, its social steps, its choreography. Plenty of dancers do both and find one feeds the other.
Where in Southend-on-Sea do the classes run? +
At partner studios central near the High Street and seafront, with children's groups spread a little wider across town. Southend Central sits a short walk off on the c2c line, there is no tram to rely on, and your exact venue is nailed down the moment you book.
How much is a street dance class in Southend? +
It costs £8 to drop in — nothing to join, no contract, and you simply come along on the weeks that work for you. When a studio locks in its regular timetable, discounted blocks open up for the regulars.
What ages do you teach? +
Adults from 17 upward make up the core class, and there are separate groups for teens and for younger children too, all run by professionals who are DBS-checked. Tell us your age bracket on the form and you will be placed accordingly.
Will I get to try breaking? +
Definitely — top rock, footwork and freezes all get their share of floor time, sitting right beside locking, popping and house in the mix. Should breaking be the thing that lands hardest for you, your coach can steer you to the local jams worth a trip.
Can you bring street dance to our school or party? +
We can — that is what the mobile crew is for. They take sessions into local schools, youth groups and children's parties all over Southend and the wider south Essex patch, Leigh through to Shoeburyness. Leave the address on the form and we will find a date that fits.
Is there freestyling in the class? +
Yes, and it is the best part. Sessions usually end on a loose circle you are free to join or skip, plus short guided freestyles along the way — making it up on the spot is where the whole thing catches fire. No one is pushed in, but most people cave and take a go within a few weeks.
