Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

First 10 min

Warm Into the Pulse

A full track goes on before anything is named, and we let the beat settle into shoulders, ribs and knees so the body is loose long before a single step earns a label.

10–25 min

Drill the Bounce

The weighted, grounded rock that sits under every hip-hop move gets its own repeated loop; nothing flashier is worth adding until that base can idle on its own.

25–40 min

One Named Step, Credited

We pick a single social dance, say plainly where it came from, and slow it right down until it lands in muscle memory instead of blurring past on a phone screen.

40–50 min

Build a Short Run

Two or three pieces from the hour get joined into a phrase you can keep, talked through on the count until the numbers quietly drop away.

50–60 min

Cypher and Cool Down

Anyone who wants a turn takes the middle of a loose circle — watching is genuinely fine — then we ease the legs and breathing back down before you head off.

About Hip-Hop Classes in Telford

Street Dance Telford has run since 2010 and carries genuine competition titles, and the Telford Academy of Performing Arts on Oxford Street covers street work for younger dancers — between them they are the real hip-hop scene in this new town, and we say so plainly. Our hip-hop classes in Telford add one calm adult lane beside them rather than pretending to own the floor; we point you their way with respect and stay a separate, unaffiliated session.

It is worth being honest about what the word covers, because hip-hop gets stapled to three fairly different jobs. Breaking lives close to the ground — the toprock, drops and freezes that need a whole class of their own. Commercial is the polished, camera-ready finish behind chart singles and tours. What we teach sits in the party-dance heart of the culture: the grounded bounce, the named social steps that came off block-party and club floors, and short runs built on top once that groove is honestly in your legs.

Telford grew as a planned town stitched together from Wellington, Oakengates, Dawley and Madeley, so there is no single centre — which suits us, because we work out of confirmed studio space near Southwater and Telford Central and travel to the wider Shropshire villages. Book a spot in town or bring us to a hall near you.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Telford?

One Groove, One Full Hour

Breaking, commercial and party dance each deserve their own room, so the whole sixty minutes goes to the social hip-hop core and the bounce actually beds in.

Straight About the Local Scene

Street Dance Telford since 2010 and the Telford Academy already carry street work here — we name them out loud and add an adult lane rather than claiming to be the town's only floor.

Roots Before Routines

Every social step is credited and pulled apart before it reaches choreography, so it settles in properly instead of being copied and forgotten by the weekend.

We Cover the New Town

Can't get to a central studio? We bring the class out to Wellington, Oakengates, Dawley and the Shropshire villages for schools, youth groups and private bookings.

Your Hip-Hop Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1–4

Owning the Bounce

What clicks

The grounded rock stops feeling like homework and starts driving on its own, so your weight, timing and knees finally agree with the track.

What we add

A couple of the easiest named party steps, each credited and drilled slowly so they stick rather than flash past.

Month 2

Stacking Steps

What clicks

You can switch between two or three social dances without losing the pulse underneath, and the changes stop feeling like emergencies.

What we add

Short linked runs and a first taste of attitude — the small pauses and accents that make a phrase read as yours.

Months 3–5

Holding a Whole Track

What clicks

A full song no longer feels like a marathon; you can pace an entire routine and still breathe at the end of it.

What we add

Musicality work — catching breaks, hits and the quiet bars so the movement answers the music instead of running over it.

Month 6+

Sounding Like You

What clicks

Freestyle stops being frightening; you can take eight bars in a circle and make choices that feel like your own voice.

What we add

Groove refinement and, if you fancy it, a nudge towards the specialist breaking and competition rooms the town genuinely has.

Hip-Hop in Telford FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Where in Telford do the hip-hop classes run? +

Our confirmed adult sessions are based near Southwater and Telford Central, with a Wellington-side option, and the exact studio is confirmed when you book. Because Telford is a spread-out new town rather than one tight centre, we also travel to Oakengates, Dawley, Madeley and the wider Shropshire villages for group and private bookings.

How much is a class? +

Every drop-in is £8, paid per session with no term to sign up to and no block you have to buy in advance. Come once to try it or come every week — the price stays the same.

How is this different from a street-dance class? +

Street dance is the broad umbrella that also holds locking, popping and commercial routines. Our hip-hop hour stays in the social, party-dance heart of the culture — the bounce and the named club and block-party steps — rather than trying to cover the whole street syllabus in sixty minutes.

Isn't hip-hop already covered by Street Dance Telford? +

It is, and we say so happily. Street Dance Telford has run since 2010 with real competition titles, and the Telford Academy teaches street work too. We are an independent adult class that sits alongside them, not a claim to replace them — if you want breaking or a competition team, they are the right door.

I've genuinely got no rhythm — will I sink? +

No. The first stretch of every class is nothing but the bounce, drilled on a loop until your body finds the beat, and we don't name a single step until that pulse is there. Most people who arrive convinced they can't dance are moving in time well before the hour is out.

What should I wear? +

Comfortable clothes you can move and sweat in, and clean trainers with a flat sole that lets you pivot. Bring water. Nothing branded or special is needed — turn up as you are.

Do you teach real foundations or screen-copied routines? +

Foundations first, always. Each social dance is credited to where it came from and unpicked slowly so it becomes yours, rather than a shape lifted off a fifteen-second clip and lost by Sunday.

Can you bring hip-hop to our school or youth group? +

Yes — that is a big part of what we do across Telford and Shropshire. We travel to schools, colleges and youth groups in Wellington, Oakengates, Donnington and beyond with an age-appropriate, foundations-led session. Ask us for a quote.

Do you run sessions for children and teenagers? +

Our weekly drop-in is pitched at adults from 17 up, but we teach younger age groups through schools, youth groups and private bookings, and we can point families towards the town's established children's street classes. Tell us the age range and we'll steer you right.
