Wake the Feet
Everything in tap happens at the ankle, so we ease those joints open first and coax the feet toward crisp, intentional taps instead of a racket. A clean sound always beats a loud one.
Single Sounds
Then we separate the building blocks — shuffle, dig, heel-drop — and drill them individually, until every tap is distinct and you can name the exact part of the foot behind it.
Making Phrases
Those single sounds get strung into little rhythmic runs — and this is where it clicks into music, your feet sounding out a pattern rather than merely moving.
A Time Step
Next comes a traditional time step — the one bit of language every tap dancer has in common — pulled apart piece by piece until the rhythm lodges in your feet.
The Full Rhythm
Finally the phrases fold together into a short number set to a track, played through enough times that you go home having tapped a complete rhythm, before we wind gently down.
About Tap Classes in Bath
Tap is unusual: it's a dance you hear as much as watch. Rather than following the music you become it, the floor turned into a drum under precise, deliberate sounds from your shoes. In Bath we start you at zero — shuffles, a time step, the trick of getting one clean sound — and within a handful of weeks you're tapping actual rhythms.
It's a game of exactness, and Bath hands you an unlikely teacher for that. Minutes from the studio, below the Abbey, the hot spring has been striking the same Roman stone for two thousand years — a slow, echoing beat under the vaults, arguably the oldest percussion in the country. Tap wants precisely that discipline: every sound landed on purpose, none of it wasted, the tidiness itself turning into the joy. Measured, exact, and quietly addictive.
The price is a flat £8 each time, nothing to sign up for, and we assume no experience at all. Sessions run from central studios near SouthGate and up in Walcot, both a short walk from the shops and Bath Spa station, and we confirm the room when you book. You don't need tap shoes to begin — any hard-soled shoe makes enough sound for a first go. Coming by car, the park-and-ride beats the cobbled centre and its short-stay parking.

Why Choose Tap in Bath?
You Are the Band
Here you're drummer and dancer at once. The beat isn't something you chase — it comes straight out of your own feet, which is oddly thrilling the second it lands.
A Workout for the Head
Lining up exact sounds under a little pressure trains memory, timing and concentration — a proper mental stretch dressed up as an hour of fun.
It Never Dates
Black-and-white musical number or today's rhythm tap, the form simply refuses to age — and good luck keeping a straight face while you do it.
Kind on the Joints
Being light on the knees and hips, tap suits pretty much any age or shape. How hard you push is entirely your call.
Your Tap Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
First Taps
The starting kit
Neat single taps — shuffle, dig, heel-drop — and the knack of keeping each one sharp instead of muddy.
On your feet
Easy-moving clothes and tap shoes if you own them, though a firm sole is fine to begin. Anything soft is silent, so give trainers a miss.
Into Rhythm
Building phrases
Weaving those taps into brief patterns — the point where it genuinely turns into music.
Meeting the time step
Taking on the one bit of vocabulary every tapper shares, unpicked slowly until it runs by itself.
Full Routines
Longer combinations
Brief patterns knit into whole numbers over a track, repeated until the beat sinks into your feet.
Clean at speed
Picking up pace without losing clarity — the line between a tapper and someone just making noise.
Further In
A weekly slot
Most dancers land on one regular class as their store of rhythms keeps widening.
Where it goes
On to speedier sequences, a first go at improvising, and the buzz of answering someone else's rhythm with your own.
Tap in Bath FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need tap shoes to start? +
No need on day one — any shoe with a hard sole gives you sound to work with. Trainers stay quiet, so avoid them. Plenty of people buy tap shoes only once they're properly hooked.
How much is a class? +
Just £8 a session, settled as you arrive — no membership and nothing to sign.
Do I need experience? +
Absolutely none. We open with the simplest single sounds and take it from there, on the basis that nobody in the room has done it before.
Is tap hard on the body? +
Not really — it's gentle on the joints, one reason it works at any age. The intensity stays in your hands the whole time.
Where are the classes held? +
Central studios by SouthGate and up in Walcot, both near the shops and Bath Spa station; we'll tell you which room when you book. Private group sessions can travel to you instead.
Is there an age limit? +
The adult class begins at 17 with no ceiling at all — people take tap up happily at every stage of life.
Will I actually learn a routine? +
You will. Everything points at short numbers over a track, so by the end of a block you can tap a whole rhythm through, top to tail.
Do I need rhythm already? +
Not at all — tap is where you build one. Few things sharpen your sense of timing quite as fast, and you start from nothing.
How do I book? +
