Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Standing Tall
Easy mobility for ankles, knees and spine, then finding a long, unforced posture — the quiet groundwork the whole of ballet balances on top of.
Holding the Barre
With the barre for support you work through pliés, tendus and slow rises, meeting the five positions and their French names as they turn up.
Away From the Wall
Those same shapes move into the middle of the room — small balances, port de bras and careful weight changes that build control with nothing to lean on.
Across the Room
Gentle chassés and a first easy turn carry the work along the floor, so ballet begins to feel like travelling rather than positions held on the spot.
Reverence and Release
A short, graceful closing sequence and then a proper stretch — the calm, upright finish that ballet is quietly loved for.
About Ballet Classes in Bolton
Nearly every other style of dance has ballet somewhere underneath it — the alignment, the turnout, the control that make the rest cohere. Coming to it as an adult, you're not working towards a childhood grade; you're taking that same rigour and spending it on a body that stands taller and moves with more control day to day.
The adult beginners' barre is held at a town-centre studio a short walk from Bolton Interchange, close to Victoria Square, and you'll be told the exact room when you book. Bolton is already well served for children's and graded ballet — Bolton School of Dance has taught here since 1984, Theatre Dance Studios works over in Halliwell, and babyballet covers the very youngest — so we happily send younger dancers their way.
What we add is a calm, unshowy class for adults who always meant to give it a go. No syllabus to sit, no performance on the horizon — just barre, centre and the steady satisfaction of learning to move well.

Why Choose Ballet in Bolton?
Posture That Sticks
Ballet quietly rebuilds how you stand, sit and carry yourself — the first thing desk-bound bodies tend to notice.
Strength, Gently
Deep, controlled, low-impact work builds core and leg strength without strain, which is why so many adults find it late and stay for years.
Easy to Reach
The adult barre runs from a town-centre studio near Victoria Square, a short walk from Bolton Interchange.
Children Well Placed
For kids' and graded, exam-track ballet we point you to Bolton's established schools — Bolton School of Dance among them — while we concentrate on adult beginners.
Your Ballet Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Finding Your Line
Getting Started
Barre basics, the opening positions and a turnout you can honestly manage — alignment and comfort long before anything for show.
What to Wear
Leggings or fitted joggers, a top you can move in, and socks or soft ballet shoes; bare feet are fine at first.
Off the Barre
Centre Work
Balances and port de bras with no barre to hold, and the core strength that quietly keeps it all upright.
Learning the Words
Plié, tendu, dégagé — the French stops sounding foreign and starts reading as instructions your body simply follows.
Moving With Grace
Travelling Steps
Joining steps into short phrases across the floor and adding the first controlled turns and small jumps.
Musicality
Matching the movement to the phrasing of the music so it flows instead of counting.
A Full Enchaînement
Longer Sequences
Linking steps into proper ballet combinations and dancing them through with calm and confidence.
Where Next
Staying with adult ballet for the poise and strength, or trying a graded school if exams start to appeal.
Ballet in Bolton FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Am I too old to be starting ballet? +
Not a bit. People take up adult ballet in their thirties, forties, sixties and later and do just fine, because the class is measured against your body, not a schoolchild's grade list. If anything the patience it asks for comes more easily with a few years on you.
I'm an adult who has never danced — is that fine? +
That's exactly who the class is for. We open with the simplest things — standing tall, a first plié — and nobody assumes you pirouetted as a seven-year-old. Look around and most people are meeting ballet for the first time in adulthood, same as you.
Do I need proper ballet kit to start? +
No special kit needed on day one. Something stretchy you can move in — leggings or fitted joggers and a comfortable top — does the job, with grippy socks or soft ballet shoes underneath. If you stick with it, a pair of ballet shoes is an inexpensive next step.
Where in Bolton is the class? +
In town, at a studio close to Victoria Square and only a short walk from Bolton Interchange, so both trains and buses leave you nearby. You'll get the exact room once you've booked, and Bromley Cross sessions come on stream as the group builds.
What does a class cost? +
A single class is £8, handed over when you arrive. There are no term fees hanging over you and no membership to join — you're only ever paying for the sessions you actually attend, with discounted blocks to come once the schedule is set.
Can my child learn ballet with you? +
Our own classes are for adults, so when it comes to children's and graded, exam-track ballet we send you to Bolton's specialists — Bolton School of Dance, teaching since 1984, Theatre Dance Studios over in Halliwell, and babyballet for the littlest ones. We'd rather point you well than pretend to cover it.
Will we go up on pointe? +
No. Rising onto pointe takes years of groundwork and properly conditioned feet, so it sits well outside a beginners' class. What we do build — flat-shoe technique, strength, control — is the exact foundation any pointe work would one day stand on.
Is there any performance or exam? +
There's none, unless you actively seek it out — no recital, no grading looming over the term. What the class gives you is the doing of it: the barre, the balances, and the oddly settling calm of a reverence to close the hour.
Could you bring a ballet-style session to a group or hen do? +
Yes — a poised barre-and-posture session carries nicely to venues around Bolton and out over the West Pennine moors, from Smithills to Westhoughton. Give us the date and a rough headcount and we'll build the hour around your group.
