Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Warm Through, No Counting Yet

We roll the joints loose and let a record play while nobody is asked to learn a single thing — knees soft, weight kept low, the rhythm sinking in a while before any step gets a name.

10–25 mins

The Groove Is the Root

Every hip-hop step grows out of a weighted, springy bounce, so that is what we drill first — kept small, repeated plenty, until it stops feeling like a task and starts feeling like the way you naturally ride a beat.

25–40 mins

A Named Social Dance, Then a Combo

One classic party dance is pulled apart each week, its story told as we go, and then dropped into a short piece of choreography set to a track you will clock straight away.

40–50 mins

Answer the Beat Back

Short call-and-response games have you snatching a beat and throwing a move back at it, so moving without a fixed script quietly becomes second nature well before you clock it happening.

50–60 mins

A Ring If You Fancy It, Then Stretch

A loose circle opens for anyone wanting a solo turn — never a requirement — and then we stretch the hour right out before the lights come up.

About Hip-Hop Classes in Bolton

Let us be straight about Bolton first. The town's real hip-hop energy sits out at Harc Studios in Bromley Cross, which leads the local street and hip-hop timetable and does it properly. What the centre of town has been missing is a plain, grown-up groove hour with no audition and no showcase looming over it — and that is the single class we run, a short step from the Interchange.

It is worth prising hip-hop apart from street dance, because the two get blurred constantly. Street dance is the umbrella class that rotates through locking, popping, breaking and house. Hip-hop is one thread inside it — the bounce, the named party dances, choreography built on records — and here that thread gets the whole hour to itself rather than a fifth of one.

Nothing is required to begin. A session is £8 on the day, no membership, nothing to sign. Bolton has no tram or Metrolink, so it is heavy rail into the station, the Interchange buses, or a car — and we pick a room handy for all three. Teenagers and children get their own age-split, DBS-checked classes running well apart from the adult hour.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Bolton?

One Hour, One Focus

Rather than a class that skips over every street style in turn, this one stays with hip-hop alone — the groove, the social dances, the choreography — and that undivided attention is exactly what makes it lodge in the body.

We Won't Oversell It

Bolton's adult hip-hop scene is modest and we would sooner say so than dress it up; if you are after the fuller street and youth timetable, we will happily send you toward Harc Studios out at Bromley Cross.

Every Move Has a Backstory

Each social dance turns up with where it came from attached, so what you leave with is a living index of steps and their roots, not one routine copied blankly off a phone screen.

Under-18s Taught Separately

Children and teens get their own age-banded, DBS-checked sessions kept apart from the adults' hour — note the age on the form and we will place them in the class that fits.

Your Hip-Hop Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

Settle Into the Bounce

Starting Point

Simple bounces, a rock step and your first named party dance. This early we chase feel and timing rather than crisp edges or polish.

What to Bring

Loose clothes you can move in and flat trainers with a touch of cushioning. A water bottle, and zero worry about looking the part yet.

Month 2–3

Stock the Toolkit

More in the Bag

Extra party dances and grooves land, along with the counting that lets you thread a handful together into a longer run.

Trying Freestyle

Low-key improvisation nudges you into unscripted movement — the real engine of hip-hop, once memorised steps stop being the whole picture.

Month 4–6

Sit in the Pocket

Hearing the Track

You begin picking out the snare, the bassline and the accents, dropping moves onto them, so it reads as intended rather than roughly close.

Longer Choreography

Fuller routines gather several weeks of material into one piece you can run clean from top to tail.

Month 6+

Move Like Yourself

Your Own Stamp

The steps start becoming recognisably yours instead of a copy of whoever happens to be leading from the front that week.

Where Next

Guest workshops, open sessions around the borough, or crossing into the street and commercial classes whenever the mood takes you.

Hip-Hop in Bolton FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

I have genuinely never danced — will I sink? +

You won't. Every beginners' hour opens on the plainest groove going and grows from there, and most of the room walked in exactly as new as you. Newcomers fold straight in, for the simple reason that newcomers are the bulk of the class.

How is this different from your street dance class in Bolton? +

Street dance is the umbrella session: locking, popping, breaking and house, shuffled about week to week. Hip-hop lifts out one strand of that and stays put on it for the whole hour — the groove, the party dances, the record-based choreography. Some dancers take both; plenty are content with just this.

Does Bolton actually have a hip-hop scene? +

A modest one for adults, and we would rather be honest than boast. Harc Studios in Bromley Cross carries the real local street and hip-hop provision, strong on the younger side especially, but a dedicated grown-ups' hour has been thin on the ground — which is precisely the gap we fill. You will never catch us calling Bolton a hip-hop capital.

Where in Bolton do the classes run? +

At partner studios in the town centre, walkable from Bolton station and the Interchange and easy to reach on the buses that feed in from Bury, Horwich and Farnworth. There is no tram or Metrolink here, so we deliberately choose a room near stops and parking, and confirm the exact address once your place is held.

What does a hip-hop class in Bolton cost? +

Eight pounds, paid the day you turn up. Nothing to join, no block bought in advance and no contract — you simply come on the weeks that suit and pay for each of those, with nothing owed for the rest.

What should I wear? +

Whatever you can move freely in; a t-shirt and joggers do the job, with flat, lightly cushioned trainers. Personal style is half the point, so past comfy and flat, dress however feels like you.

Do you teach real foundations, or is it copy-the-clip? +

Foundations every time. Each party dance is taken to bits, named and rebuilt, and only then does it feed the choreography — so the movement lands properly in your body instead of being mimicked off a screen at arm's length.

Can you bring hip-hop to our youth group or school in Bolton? +

Gladly — we are also a mobile team. Workshops for schools, youth clubs and birthdays run right across the borough, from Halliwell and Harwood out to Westhoughton and Horwich. Flag your venue on the enquiry form and we will sort the rest.

Do you run classes for children and teenagers too? +

Yes — younger dancers and teens have age-banded classes alongside the adult one, staffed by DBS-checked teachers. Tick the right age on the form and we will steer you to the correct session.
