Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Change of Gear

We start soft — the neck and shoulders rolled loose, the hips woken up, one lazy circuit of the room. The point is a switch of gear: the errands and the emails get left at the door while the sly, unhurried attitude the whole dance runs on moves in.

10–25 mins

One Piece at a Time

Now the vocabulary, taken a piece at a time. How a shimmy sits in the shoulders, where the weight lands on a hip bump, the slow logic of a glove coming loose. We drill each on its own until it stops looking accidental and starts looking chosen.

25–40 mins

The Acting Underneath

This is the acting the moves hang off — a look sent out and held a beat too long, a breath you flatly refuse to hurry, a fan cracked open just halfway. Get this and a string of steps quietly turns into a number.

40–50 mins

Threading the Number

The pieces join into one short routine, set to big-band brass, a slow torch song or whatever's riding high in the charts. It's plotted so a first-timer and a regular hit the closing pose together, nobody left scrambling.

50–60 mins

Curtain Up

One wholehearted go from the top, straight-faced and fully in character, and then we stretch everything out and trade notes on whose cheekiest moment landed best.

About Burlesque Classes in Cardiff

Take the striptease association away and what's left of burlesque is pure command of a room — a look that lingers a fraction too long, a glove drawn slowly loose, everyone leaning in to see what comes next. It's showmanship with a wink, and always has been, and Cardiff dresses the part: a city of glass-roofed Victorian arcades, the Royal, the Castle and the Morgan, gathered around a fairytale castle right in the centre.

Every session runs behind a closed door — partner studios around the city centre by the Castle and the arcades, or over the river in Canton and Pontcanna, with your room confirmed on booking. Pull the curtain and the only person watching is you, in the mirror. And let's clear up the usual nerves straight off: not one layer is removed, start to finish.

What you take home is presence, not nudity — the walk, the nerve, the timing to know when doing nothing at all is the strongest move going. Wear the thing that makes you feel a foot taller and dance in it. There's room here for anyone over 17, all builds and all genders, and plenty of groups make it an afternoon before cocktails on Mill Lane or a gig down Womanby Street.

Why Choose Burlesque in Cardiff?

Command That Follows You Out

The way you learn to own a room under pretend lights has a habit of tagging along afterwards — into meetings, onto dates, into any doorway you'd rather walk through like the place is yours.

Timing You Can Actually Learn

The loaded pause, the wink, the reveal landed on the beat — none of that is something you're born with. We dismantle each trick and rehearse it until it needs no thought at all.

The Props Earn Their Entrance

Fans, long gloves and a boa only come out once your feet are sure of themselves, brought in gradually so nobody's fighting a heap of feathers before the walk is properly their own.

A Spotlight That Isn't Fussy

This is the city that sent a Tiger Bay girl off to become a Bond-theme legend — proof enough the light isn't choosy. Your size, your age, an empty space where dance history might sit: none of it keeps you out.

Your Burlesque Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

Learning to Prowl

Getting Started

Unhurried walks the length of the room, the hips loosening off, and the relaxed carriage that draws a look without appearing to ask for one. Confidence and mischief lead; the tidy steps can catch up later.

What to Wear

Whatever leaves you comfortable and free to move — leggings and a soft top are the standard kit. A heel lengthens the leg if that appeals, though loads of people never come off their trainers.

Month 2–3

Building a Persona

Technique

A glove eased off slowly, rolling shimmies, cheeky little bumps, joined into short runs — and every move handed a thread of story so it reads as a decision rather than a stray twitch.

Your Character

You begin sketching a stage self — a name, a temperament, a firm idea of what that walk is announcing as it carries you across the floor.

Month 4–6

Working the Whole Room

Full Numbers

Longer routines that bring a fan or a boa into play, spreading right across the space and steering every eye with nothing louder than a change of pace.

Stagecraft

The weighted hush, the comic beat, the knack of trimming a track to fit your number — the last layer that makes an act out of a run of steps.

Month 6+

Your First Spotlight

Optional Showcase

For anyone who wants it, a place on a cabaret line-up with live backing — never asked of you, always at the speed you choose.

Your Own Act

Devising a solo that's yours from top to bottom — the steps, the soundtrack, the whole look — the point where you stop studying this and start performing it.

Burlesque in Cardiff FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Does burlesque mean taking clothes off? +

Not here — you keep every layer on. The dance lives in the movement and the performance of it, not the clothes: your carriage, your timing, and a reveal so light it never gets past a glove sliding off, a fan, or a look thrown back over the shoulder.

I've never danced a step — is that okay? +

That's the standard starting point, not the exception. We pull each move apart slowly from that opening walk, and in a beginners class you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who's tried burlesque before. Any body, any age over 17, all on one floor — bring curiosity and leave the rest to us.

Where in Cardiff are the burlesque classes held? +

Partner studios in the city centre near the Castle and the arcades, and out west in Canton and Pontcanna, always in a private, curtained room rather than anywhere on view. Your exact address arrives with the booking, a short walk from Cardiff Central or Queen Street.

What does a burlesque class in Cardiff cost? +

£8 on a drop-in, handed over on the night, with no contract and no sign-up. When your local studio settles a fixed weekly time, booking a block brings the cost down.

Are men welcome in burlesque? +

Of course — the Cardiff room is open to all genders. Boylesque has belonged to the art since its beginnings, and the class is mixed, easy-going and entirely free of side-eye.

What music do the routines run to? +

A real mix — brassy swing, a slow torch song, every so often something lifted from the current charts. Teaching the tease across a spread of tempos is deliberate, so you never get boxed into one sound.

Is there a dress code? +

Only that it makes you feel great and lets you move — leggings and a stretchy top are the usual pick. A heel gives a longer line if you own a pair, though plenty keep their trainers on, and no particular footwear is needed to start.

Do I ever have to get on a stage? +

Completely optional. Many come purely for the enjoyment and never perform; for anyone who feels the pull, there's a supported, no-pressure route towards a cabaret slot whenever it feels right.

Could this work for a Cardiff hen do? +

One of our most-booked. A private routine makes a brilliant hen afternoon before drinks around Mill Lane or a gig down Womanby Street — pop your date and numbers on the form and we'll sort a studio or come to you.
