Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Loosen and Bounce
The hour opens easy, hunting the head-nod and shoulder rock that everything else grows out of. It is also the quickest trick for melting the awkwardness out of a fresh room full of strangers.
A Social Dance With a Name
Each week brings one proper party dance and a line about where it was born, so you learn the real move with its history rather than a blurry copy off somebody's feed.
Choreo to a Beat
That week's steps get folded into a short choreographed run over a hip-hop or chart record, then we add the accents and stops that separate going-through-the-motions from actually dancing it.
Playing With the Track
Small, unfussy improv games where the aim is to feel the music and answer it — no spotlight, just enough room to try things and start trusting your own instincts.
Once More, Then Down
We take the routine full-tempo one last time so it lands, then wind everything back down with a stretch that looks after the calves and ankles the class has been working.
About Hip-Hop Classes in Cardiff
Hip-hop is a full discipline, and it earns a whole hour to itself instead of a cameo inside a lightning tour of the street family. What you get in these hip-hop dance classes in Cardiff is the branch on its own terms — the grooves, the named social party dances, the choreography set to hip-hop and chart records — with the depth that a proper subject deserves.
The capital keeps its music young and close to street level. Womanby Street and the little rooms tucked under the Castle have kept a home-grown hip-hop and street scene ticking for years, while the big student population out around Cathays keeps a class busy, mixed and easy to disappear into. Our floors sit in the city centre by the Victorian arcades, over in Cardiff Bay, and up towards Cathays — you will hear which is yours once a place is held.
Turning up unable to dance a step is completely ordinary here; that describes most of the room on any given week. We pull the groove right apart so it becomes second nature, then we start stacking. The main class welcomes everyone from school-leavers to dancers well into their sixties, younger age groups run separately under vetted teachers, and one visit is £8 with no sign-up hanging over it.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Cardiff?
One Branch, Done Properly
The whole hour stays inside genuine hip-hop rather than sprinting through locking, popping and breaking and giving none of them a fair go — depth over a sampler.
A Young Capital's Energy
Cardiff's grassroots music lanes and its huge student crowd hand the room a busy, mixed buzz that first-timers find genuinely easy to slip into.
Sessions for Under-18s
Younger dancers work in their own age groups with safeguarding-checked teachers, and hip-hop is one of the most requested classes on that side of the timetable.
Starting From Scratch Is Normal
Arriving with no steps whatsoever is the usual way in, not the odd exception — the person beside you almost certainly began the exact same way.
Your Hip-Hop Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
The Feel
Where It Starts
Bounce, rock and a first party dance, chasing timing and ease on the beat. Sharpness is a later concern and tends to sort itself out once the feel is there.
Turning Up
Joggers or trackies, a top you do not mind sweating through, and flat trainers with a little cushioning. Once you are comfortable, dress however feels like you.
The Vocabulary
Building Up
New party dances land each week and the choreography gets tidier, with texture and hits worked in until your runs start sounding like the records they sit on.
A Bit of Improv
The freestyle games nudge forward — short solos, call-and-response, backing your own decisions while the track carries on around you.
The Flavour
Sounding Like You
Longer pieces and freestyles where you start pulling counts about and leaving a fingerprint, rather than mirroring whoever happens to be at the front.
In the Circle
Comfortable jumping in and greeted by name — in Cardiff the hip-hop room is a scene you belong to, not a box you tick and forget.
Holding Your Own
Going Further
Meatier choreography, keener musicality, and freestyle solid enough to lean on when a record hands you a curveball halfway through a phrase.
What's Next
Showcases, our own events, or narrowing in on whichever corner of hip-hop has quietly got its claws into you the deepest.
Hip-Hop in Cardiff FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
How is this different from your street dance class? +
Think of street dance as the family name — locking, popping, breaking and house all rotated through. Hip-hop is one member of that family, and this is where it lives: grooves, social party dances and choreography to hip-hop and chart tracks. A fair few people happily take both.
I can't dance at all — is that going to be a problem? +
It genuinely is not. We build every course up from the bounce and add a single idea at a time, and in the starter sessions the outright newcomers are the majority, so you are the rule rather than the exception.
Which parts of Cardiff are the classes in? +
Partner studios by the arcades in the city centre, down in Cardiff Bay, and up around Cathays, with younger groups spreading a bit wider. The precise venue comes through when you book, and each is a short stroll or hop from Cardiff Central or Queen Street.
Is it more about set routines or freestyle? +
Both live in every session. You collect social party dances and a piece of choreography, then dip into guided improv — brief games rather than a spotlight. Most people are itching to get in the circle within a handful of weeks.
What am I best off wearing? +
Anything you can move and sweat in, on flat trainers with a cushioned sole. Beyond that, hip-hop has always been about how you carry yourself, so lean into whatever feels like your own look.
What does a drop-in cost, and is there a contract? +
It is £8 a class, handed over on the night, and nothing binds you in. When your nearest studio settles into a regular weekly slot, cheaper multi-week blocks open up next to the single sessions.
Are there classes for kids and teenagers? +
There are — under-18s have their own age-banded groups with safeguarding-checked teachers, and hip-hop is one of the busiest on that timetable. Pop your age on the form and we will point you at the right one.
Do you do social party dances or choreography? +
Both, side by side, week after week. The party dances come with the story behind them and the choreography puts them to work — by the close of a term you can hold a clean eight-count without thinking too hard.
Could you run hip-hop at a venue outside the centre? +
Yes, we are mobile as well. Workshops, birthdays and youth-group sessions travel out across greater Cardiff and into the Vale, from Penarth across to Barry and up toward Caerphilly — just tell us on the form where you are based.
