Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0-10 min

Wake From the Ground

We open lying down, unspooling the spine vertebra by vertebra and letting a breath, not a push, set the first motion going. The body switches on from the floor upward before a single step is asked of it.

10-22 min

Weight and Give

Next comes the trade at the heart of the style - pouring your weight down into the floor and riding the bounce back out of it. Spirals, tilts and slow suspensions coach you to travel on momentum rather than force.

22-36 min

Cross the Room in Orbits

Phrases begin to carry you sideways and around - contrasting pathways that shift weight and tempo as they go, a nod to Holst's planets tracing their own separate arcs. Turns and level changes stitch the journeys together.

36-48 min

Make the Phrase Yours

We hand you either a short set piece or a framed improvisation task and let you play the dynamics, heavy through to feather. The instruction is raw material to shape, never a script to copy off the teacher.

48-60 min

Come to Rest

Unhurried stretches and a genuine pocket of quiet to let the hour land in the body. Contemporary trades on presence, so we leave you the stillness to actually register what just moved.

About Contemporary Classes in Cheltenham

Contemporary is the most exploratory of the studio forms - it traded ballet's fixed outline for movement steered by weight, momentum and the tug of gravity. Cheltenham makes an apt home for it: a town that runs four internationally known festivals across jazz, literature, science and music carries a creative appetite that a searching, open-ended dance form feeds off directly.

There is a local thread worth pulling too. Gustav Holst was born on Clarence Road in 1874, and while we never reproduce his compositions, the idea behind The Planets - separate bodies each holding their own tempo and weight - is a gift of an image for group travelling work. We borrow the shape, not the sound, and let the Regency ironwork and long terraced curves of Montpellier stand in for the settling, unfolding line of a phrase.

Studios such as Danceworks have kept contemporary alive locally for years, so the ground is already warm. Our adult class opens the same door with none of the audition nerves - first-timers, long-lapsed returners and any build are all welcome. Come in something fitted you can roll around in, dance barefoot or in gripped socks, and expect a town-centre room near the Promenade with the exact address sent once you book.

Why Choose Contemporary in Cheltenham?

Room to Actually Express

Beneath the technique sits real licence to move how your body wants. We chase honest intention, not one photogenic silhouette pinned in the mirror for an hour.

Strength You Can Use

Controlled descents, suspensions and floor work forge a working strength through the core, spine and joints that no fixed gym machine ever quite locates.

Sixty Minutes Off the Grid

Breath-driven work and improvisation settle a loud head while the body carries the load. For many members this is the single hour a week the phone truly disappears.

Breadth for Any Mover

Already train ballet or jazz? This bolts on the grounded, weighted end of things - floor craft and momentum that lifted styles rarely reach, feeding straight back into the rest.

Your Contemporary Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

01

Meeting the Floor

Opening Weeks

You get acquainted with the ground - rolling, spiralling, passing weight from one point to the next - and learn to let breath launch a movement. The swap between dropping and rebounding underpins everything that follows.

What to Pack

Fitted leggings, a close top, hair tied back and either bare feet or gripped socks. Leave anything baggy at home; down on the floor the teacher has to read your alignment clearly.

02

Stacking the Vocabulary

Filling the Toolkit

Contractions, suspensions and fall-and-recovery arrive, plus travelling phrases threaded with turns and changing levels. You start to notice momentum quietly doing the labour your muscles used to.

Reacting in the Moment

Guided improvisation - answering an image, a texture or another dancer - grows the nerve to keep moving with no fixed sequence waiting in front of you.

03

Widening the Range

Longer Sequences

Extended material that laces floor, standing work and small jumps into one run, testing your stamina and your recall in the same breath.

Building, Not Copying

You assemble short phrases of your own and meet the makers' tools - motif, repetition, development - that lift plain movement into something with shape and intent.

04

Sounding Like You

An Assured Dancer

Secure enough now to perform, interpret and compose. Optional showings and shared pieces sit there for the taking, or go happily ignored - the choice stays yours.

Keeping It Going

Add ballet for line, hunt down a contact-improvisation workshop, or simply keep turning up. This practice pays out on patience far more than on the quick hit.

Contemporary in Cheltenham FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Never danced before - can I still start contemporary here? +

Absolutely, and plenty of the room began exactly there. Every task is offered with an easier route in, and because the form values intention over polish there is no single perfect shape you have to nail in week one.

Am I supposed to be flexible already? +

No. Whatever range your body currently owns is enough, and we use it with control instead of hunting extreme positions. Any extra suppleness shows up later on its own, never as a fee for joining.

What actually separates contemporary from ballet? +

Ballet builds lifted, exact lines held up against gravity; contemporary works hand in hand with gravity, dropping, rebounding and rolling through the floor. Loads of dancers keep both, since each fills the gap the other leaves.

Are we down on the floor for most of it? +

Most weeks a fair amount, yes - floor work sits at the centre of the style. We build the strength to get down and back up in stages, so it stays safe at first and turns genuinely fluid inside a month or so.

What kit should I turn up in? +

Something fitted you can move freely in, a water bottle and a warm layer for the cool-down. Bare soles or gripped socks win; baggy gear only hides the alignment your teacher needs to see.

Is the class only for a certain age? +

It runs for adults from seventeen up with no upper limit - people well into their sixties move next to dancers in their twenties. Mixed ages are the design, not the exception, and nobody sticks out.

What does one class set me back in Cheltenham? +

Eight pounds, handed over on the night. No membership, no block of sessions to buy up front and nothing to forfeit if life makes you miss a week - that flat rate covers every Dance Centre UK class in town.

Whereabouts in Cheltenham do you run it? +

From a town-centre studio with a sprung floor that suits jumps and floor work, a few minutes from the Promenade and Montpellier. We email you the precise address the moment your place is confirmed.

Can I reach it without driving into the middle of town? +

Easily - Cheltenham Spa station is about a mile west, roughly twenty minutes on foot or a quick bus or taxi. During Festival and Gold Cup week in March, leave extra time and expect parking and cabs to be at a premium.
