Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Warm Up to the Soundtrack

We limber up to a big film number — nobody manages to stay stony-faced to that music, so the grinning tends to arrive well ahead of the actual dancing.

10–25 mins

Talking Hands and Eyes

Half of Bollywood lives in the face and hands, so we take on a set of the signature gestures and the expressions that let an audience read the story unfolding.

25–40 mins

The Bhangra Bounce

Then the feet get involved — the bouncing, high-spirited footwork pulled from bhangra and cinema that drives the whole number relentlessly along.

40–50 mins

Stacking the Number

We build the gestures, the steps and the attitude into a compact routine set to a film track — the kind an entire cast dances as one in a movie.

50–60 mins

Perform It Full Beam

We take the finished routine from the top to a full film track, big grins all round, dancing it together as a cast the way these numbers are built to be danced.

About Bollywood Classes in Derby

Bollywood dance is the exuberant choreography of Indian cinema — the show-stopping group numbers that light up a film, where dozens of dancers hit every accent in perfect time. It blends three things: the delicate storytelling gestures of classical Indian dance, the earthy bounce of Punjabi bhangra, and up-to-the-minute pop choreography. Designed for a crowd rather than a soloist, it lets a first-timer disappear happily into the group.

Derby has its own living roots for this. Surtal Arts runs South Asian arts across the city, Bollywood dance workshops among them, and the Derby Hindu Temple has hosted classes through the Shakti Dance Academy. That means our teaching leans on a real, home-grown celebration culture rather than borrowing a hook from elsewhere — the dancing you learn here belongs to Derby's own South Asian community.

You need to bring nothing at all — no experience, no dance training, no special level of fitness, only a willingness to grin your way through it. Which is why it lands so well at a wedding sangeet, a family celebration or a rowdy, colourful hen do. Our studios reach from Chapel Street in the Cathedral Quarter out across Derby, each a short bus or taxi from the station on the east side.

Why Choose Bollywood in Derby?

Joy First, Skill Second

Because it is built for a whole group, a newcomer melts into the line from the first minute. You spend most of lesson one moving and grinning, not agonising over getting every step exactly right.

Your Whole Self Dances

Hands that speak, eyes that tell the story, feet that spring — a Bollywood routine calls on the whole of you at once, and that is why the hour simply vanishes.

Rooted in Derby's Own Culture

From Surtal Arts' South Asian workshops to the classes hosted at the Derby Hindu Temple, the city has a real celebration scene, and our teaching draws on it honestly.

Made for Celebrations

Nothing quite matches Bollywood for a hen do, a sangeet or a festival turn — bright, high-spirited and impossible to dance with a stony face.

Your Bollywood Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

Onto the Screen

First Moves

An opening warm-up to a film song, a first look at the storytelling hand shapes, and the bouncing base step that drives most numbers.

What to Wear

Loose clothes you can move and sweat in, and trainers that grip a little; add bangles or a splash of colour if you fancy, though nothing is required.

Month 2–3

Face and Feet Together

Storytelling

Picking up the mudra-inspired hand shapes and the facial expression that lift bare steps into a story the room can follow.

Folk Flavours

A dose of bhangra shoulder bounce and folk stepping laced into the film routine.

Month 4–6

The Whole Number

Full Routine

Assembling the gestures, steps and swagger into an entire film-song routine you can run start to finish.

Formations

Hitting the group formations — the shifting lines and shapes that give Bollywood its cinema look.

Month 6+

Selling It

Performance Polish

Tighter timing, larger expression and the confidence to perform a number to a full, watching room.

Where Next

Improver sessions, a turn at a wedding or festival, or just a bright standing date in your week.

Bollywood in Derby FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Whereabouts in Derby are the Bollywood classes? +

Our studios run from Chapel Street in the Cathedral Quarter out across the city. Do bear in mind Derby station is on the east side of the centre, so from the platforms it is a short bus or taxi to the studio. Your exact room is confirmed once you book.

Do I need any dance experience to start Bollywood? +

None whatsoever. The dance is built for a full cast to perform together, so it is about as beginner-friendly as they come — no solo spotlight, and nowhere you have to stand out. We begin from scratch, and most of the room is trying it for the very first time.

How much is a Bollywood class in Derby? +

A drop-in is £8, paid on the night with no membership and nothing to sign. Once your nearest studio locks in a regular weekly time, we add discounted blocks for anyone who wants to book a full run of weeks.

Will we learn a whole film routine or just steps? +

Both, and in that order. The early weeks build the toolkit — the hand gestures, the expression and the springing footwork — then we assemble it all into a full film-song routine you can dance right through. Finishing on a real number is the whole point of it.

What should I wear — do I need Indian dress? +

Only comfy clothes you can move and sweat in, with trainers that grip a bit. Indian dress is absolutely not required, though bright colours or a jangle of bangles add to the fun if you like. Come exactly as you are and dive straight in.

Can you run Bollywood for a wedding sangeet or a festival? +

Very much so — a sangeet or festival set is one of the jobs we most enjoy. Celebration is Bollywood's whole reason to exist, so those occasions fit it naturally. Tell us your song, your group size and your date on the form, and we will build the routine to match.

Can we book a private Bollywood class for a hen party? +

Yes, and it is a cracking choice — bright, joyful and impossible to be shy through. Bollywood hen parties are among our most-booked group days: the group picks up a single film number together and everyone finishes beaming. Send the form with your numbers and a date.

Is a Bollywood class a proper workout? +

It genuinely is, though you will be enjoying yourself far too much to clock it. The fast footwork, the constant arm and hand work and the pace of a full routine add up to real cardio — most people end the hour glowing and out of breath in the best way.

Am I too old to give Bollywood a go? +

Not in the least. Bollywood is danced across every generation — as much a family and festival tradition as a young person's style — so all ages are welcome in our classes. The energy carries you along rather than wearing you out, and you set your own pace inside the routine.
