Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Loosen to the Loop
We warm up riding the two-step and shoulder bounce that every hip-hop move sits on top of, getting the whole room moving to the track before any counts arrive.
One Named Social Dance
Each session picks a single classic off the function floor — where it came from and how it was really done — so your vocabulary grows one genuine party dance at a time.
Learn the Set
The night's moves get threaded into a short routine over a hip-hop or current chart cut, taught count by count and repeated until your body stops having to think about it.
Hit It or Ride It
Time spent on feel — attacking a beat sharply on one run, then leaning back lazy on the next — because in hip-hop how you move the counts matters as much as the counts.
Optional Circle, Then Down
A voluntary cypher for anyone who wants to try the moves their own way, followed by a full stretch to send you home loose.
About Hip-Hop Classes in Derby
Hip-hop earns a whole class here rather than a cameo in a street-dance mix. Where street dance rotates through locking, popping, breaking and house, hip-hop stays with what it grew out of — the grooves, the social dances people actually threw down at parties, and choreography built on hip-hop and chart tracks. Given sixty focused minutes, it becomes a craft.
Derby already moves to this. The weekly programme around Chapel Street runs commercial, breaking and street sessions, and academies out in Spondon and the city centre keep the style busy — so you are joining something genuinely alive rather than switching a light on. Our hip-hop classes in Derby teach from partner studios in the Cathedral Quarter, with the exact room named once you book.
Almost everyone arrives unable to chain two moves together, and that is precisely the right place to start — groove first, everything else stacked on top. Drop-in is £8 with nothing to sign, and under-18s train in their own age-grouped, supervised classes. If you are travelling in, the bus station on the Morledge sits closer to the Cathedral Quarter than the railway station does.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Derby?
Its Own Class, Not a Sampler
Hip-hop here means grooves, named party dances and choreography given a full hour — not a single move lifted from a street-dance rotation.
A City Already Dancing It
Commercial, breaking and street sessions run weekly around Chapel Street and beyond, so you step into a living scene rather than an empty room.
Groove Comes First
We drill the bounce and rock before any routine, so the choreography lands on a real foundation — the order the style was actually built in.
Kids and Teens Included
Age-grouped children's and teen classes run beside the adult floor, each one led by DBS-checked teachers.
Your Hip-Hop Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
The First Bounce
Where You Begin
The two-step, the shoulder bounce and one easy social dance — all about locking into rhythm, not producing a finished routine.
Turn Up In
Comfortable clothes that cope with a sweat and flat trainers with a little give. Nothing else to buy.
Building a Bank of Moves
Collecting Classics
A new named party dance most weeks, each filed away with the story that makes it stick in the memory.
Your First Set
Short choreographed pieces over hip-hop and chart music, drilled slowly until they run without you counting aloud.
Making It Speak
Playing the Beat
Pushing and dragging against the music so identical counts can feel aggressive one moment and laid-back the next.
Into the Circle
The cypher loses its teeth as short improvisation games grow the confidence to move without a plan.
A Voice of Your Own
Tougher Material
Longer, cleaner routines that pull together everything you have banked into something worth performing.
Stepping Out
Local jams, battles and open floors to try when you are ready — your teacher knows which ones suit you.
Hip-Hop in Derby FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
How is this different from your street dance class? +
Street dance is the umbrella term — locking, popping, breaking and house shared out across the sessions. Hip-hop keeps to its own ground: the grooves it came from, the named party dances and choreography set to hip-hop and chart music. A lot of dancers happily do both.
I've never danced before — is that a problem? +
Not remotely. Most of the room walks in unable to link two moves, which is exactly the starting point we build from. Every class opens on the groove — a bounce anyone can find — and grows from there, so beginners are the rule here, not the exception.
Will we actually learn proper party dances? +
Yes — most weeks feature one named social dance taught with its history attached, from older staples to far more recent ones. They are the backbone of hip-hop and, for most people, the most enjoyable way into the style.
Whereabouts in Derby are the classes? +
At partner studios in the Cathedral Quarter, close to Chapel Street's busy dance scene, with kids' sessions spread wider across the city. Your exact room is confirmed when you book — and the Morledge bus station is the handier arrival point for the centre.
What should I bring or wear? +
Clothes you can move and sweat in, plus flat trainers with a bit of cushioning. Hip-hop has always rated personal style, so past the basics, wear whatever feels like you.
How much does a hip-hop class in Derby cost? +
Drop-in is £8, paid per session, with nothing to join and no contract to sign. Discounted blocks follow once your local studio's regular timetable is settled.
Can adults join, or is it aimed at children? +
Adults from 17 to 75 share the main floor. Under-18s have their own age-grouped, supervised classes — 15–16, 9–14 and 6–8 — every one led by DBS-checked teachers.
Is there any breaking in it? +
A little top rock and groundwork gets a look, but breaking is really its own discipline with its own coaches around Derby. If it grabs you, we will happily point you toward the specialists.
Do I have to freestyle in front of people? +
Never on demand. The closing cypher is always optional, though most people have talked themselves into it by the second month. Gentle, structured drills build the confidence long before anyone expects a solo.
