Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

First 8 min

Let the Track Land

Nobody counts anything yet. A whole song plays while the beat sinks down through relaxed knees and easy ribs, so that when we do move, the movement is answering the music rather than a number in your head.

8–22 min

Anchor the Weight

The low, springy shift of weight that sits beneath every hip-hop move gets drilled on its own — patient, near the floor — until it starts powering itself off the beat with nothing from your brain.

22–38 min

Name and Trace

We take a single club step, say it out loud, place where it first came from, and take it to pieces gently, so it arrives honest and keeps its history instead of blurring into a knock-off.

38–50 min

Weave the Eight

Groove and new step get threaded into one short, repeating eight-count, and the second it loops round without a snag the numbers quietly disappear and it becomes dancing.

50–60 min

Ring It Out

A loose circle forms, a solo turn in the middle is there for the taking with zero pressure, and then a warm stretch sees everyone out on a grin.

About Hip-Hop Classes in Huddersfield

Huddersfield is not short of street dance, and saying otherwise would be daft. Fidget Feet Dance holds the town's strongest breaking and street reputation — popping, locking, waacking, the lot — while RISE Dance and Fitness and Pennine Academy of Dance keep a steady stream of young dancers moving on the Gledholt and Milnsbridge side. Set against all that, our hip-hop classes in Huddersfield aim at something modest and specific: a calm, single-lane hour for adults picking the style up late in life, offered next to those specialists rather than in competition with them, and we will gladly wave you toward Fidget Feet or RISE the day you fancy going properly deep.

One word doing three very different jobs is worth untangling before you book. Breaking is the acrobatic floor craft — toprock into drops and freezes — and it really wants a matted room of its own. Commercial is the polished, camera-ready look that fronts idol videos and tour stages. The version we spend the hour on is neither of those: it is the club-born groove, the springy weight sitting under the music and the steps people genuinely danced at parties, with any routine bolted on only after that feel has moved properly into your legs.

For a town of its size Huddersfield takes sound seriously — this is where the Ultravox synth man Billy Currie grew up, and where the thrash band Evile came together back in 2004 — so an adults' groove session hardly feels out of place. Sessions run from confirmed rooms barely a couple of minutes from the Grade I railway station, around St George's Square and New Street, with another on the Lindley and Marsh side, and for groups we load the car and head out to Almondbury, Milnsbridge, Newsome and along the Colne Valley.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Huddersfield?

All Sixty Minutes on Groove

Breaking and commercial each demand a room of their own, so we give every minute of the hour to the club-born core — comfortably the quickest way to get real bounce into a grown-up body.

No Bluffing About the Town

Fidget Feet and RISE are the genuine breaking and street outfits here and we say so gladly. Our adult hour runs beside them, entirely unaffiliated, and we send you their way whenever a serious pathway is the goal.

Where the Steps Came From

Every move is placed back in its own history as you learn it, so you walk out understanding the party-dance lineage behind it instead of parroting a clip filmed on a phone.

Across Kirklees to You

Town-centre and Lindley rooms plus a proper mobile service put the very same hour into a hall near Almondbury, Milnsbridge, Newsome or anywhere out along the Colne Valley.

Your Hip-Hop Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1–4

Settling the Bounce

What clicks

The grounded shift of weight quietly stops needing your attention and simply keeps itself going, pulling your knees, your balance and your timing into line with the track.

What we add

A couple of the most forgiving club steps, each placed in its roots and taught unhurried, so they lodge in the body rather than whipping past and disappearing.

Month 2

Linking Steps

What clicks

You glide between a few steps while the bounce keeps ticking underneath, so the joins between them read as dance instead of as beats going missing.

What we add

Gentle dips in level and a hint of shoulder swagger, so the groove starts to look like you rather than a copy of the person teaching it.

Months 3–5

A Song, Start to Finish

What clicks

A complete track becomes something you can carry, rising and dropping alongside it rather than emptying out after a couple of eights.

What we add

Small freestyle gaps left open inside the phrase where the next move is entirely your shout — dependably the spot where nerve turns into confidence.

Month 6+

Your Own Accent

What clicks

Steps you know start taking on your personal flavour, the delay and lean in your timing hardening into a signature you never actually set out to build.

What we add

Solo spells taken into the ring and short, low-stakes moments with eyes on you, until dancing in front of a room stops feeling like a dare.

Hip-Hop in Huddersfield FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Where do the hip-hop sessions actually happen? +

Adult classes are confirmed a two-minute walk from Huddersfield railway station, around St George's Square and New Street, with a second base on the Lindley and Marsh side — you get the precise room once your spot is booked. For groups we also travel out to Almondbury, Milnsbridge, Newsome and the Colne Valley.

What is the price? +

Eight pounds flat for a single class, settled on the day. There is no sign-up fee, no run of weeks to buy ahead and nothing ticking over quietly in the background. If a private group or a booking at your own venue suits you better, say so and we will give you a straight figure.

So what separates this from your street-dance hour? +

In all honesty the two blur into each other, which is why people muddle the names. Our dividing line is the finish: the street-dance hour reaches for the tight, choreographed, commercial look, whereas this one stays down in the loose, social, groove-led half — club steps and bounce leading, fixed routines trailing well behind.

With Fidget Feet and RISE around, why offer this at all? +

Because they cover a different need. Fidget Feet is the town's serious breaking and street base and RISE adds plenty more, and both are the right port of call for a full pathway. Ours is a smaller, unattached beginners' hour that simply sits alongside them, and we point you onward the moment that suits you.

Rhythm isn't my strong point — am I going to struggle? +

You really will be fine. We open every class doing nothing but coaxing the pulse into the body, well before a single step earns a name, and the bounce is handed over slowly and on its own. The folk most convinced they cannot dance are usually the ones laughing their way through the phrase by the end.

Is there anything I should wear? +

Wear something roomy enough to drop low in, and trainers with a smooth sole so you can turn without the floor grabbing at you — leave stiff jeans and grippy soles behind. Water sorts you out; there is no need to break out pristine kicks until your feet feel at home.

Is this proper foundations or just copying videos? +

Foundations, every session. The bounce is laid down first and each club step is credited back to where it started, so you finish with the culture in your pocket rather than a mimicked video. Choreography is only ever stacked on once that groove is genuinely alive in your legs.

Could you run a session for a group, society or youth club? +

Very much so — coming out to a group is one of the things we do most. Hand us a school hall, a University of Huddersfield society room or any community space across Kirklees and we shape the hour around the ages and the level actually standing in front of us.

Is there anything for under-18s? +

The standard drop-in is written with adults in mind, though come-to-you workshops can be pitched at younger groups when you ask. For regular junior street and hip-hop in the town, Fidget Feet and RISE both run children's classes and are the people to call.
