Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

First 10 min

Warm and Loosen

We wake the spine, ankles and hips and drill clean isolations — head, ribcage, shoulders moving alone — so the body is switched on and articulate before any real step arrives.

10–22 min

Line and Carriage

A little time on the upright jazz posture and the lifted chest that makes the style read from the back row, plus the flat-back and contraction that give it its shape.

22–38 min

Travel the Floor

Across-the-floor patterns — chassés, pas de bourrée, a chained kick — worked in short runs so distance, timing and cover all come together without a scramble.

38–50 min

Build the Combo

The pieces gather into a short show-style routine set to a musical-theatre track, layered slowly so the accents land where the music actually asks for them.

50–60 min

Run It and Stretch

A couple of full runs with a bit of performance shine, then a proper cool-down and lengthen so you leave loose rather than stiff.

About Jazz Classes in Huddersfield

Huddersfield already has real jazz pedigree in its dance schools. Adele Taylor Dance has taught from the town centre for more than forty years, and Pennine Academy of Dance runs jazz beside its tap, acro and street work out of Gledholt and Milnsbridge. Our jazz classes in Huddersfield are not competing with either of them — they are an unhurried adult-beginner hour that sits alongside that established provision, for people who want the theatrical style without a graded syllabus or an exam at the end of it.

Jazz is the upright, sprung, show-facing cousin of the dance family. Expect isolations that move one part of you at a time, a pas de bourré that ferries you across the floor, kicks and pirouettes, and the flash of a jazz hand landed on the right beat. Its bloodline runs through Broadway and the musical stage, and the Lawrence Batley Theatre on Queen Street South keeps live theatre a few minutes' walk from the class, so the style never feels far from where it belongs.

This is a town that listens for a living — the Huddersfield Choral Society has filled the town hall with mass harmony for generations, and every November hcmf// turns the place into a laboratory for brand-new music. Jazz rewards exactly that kind of ear, because it lives on hitting the accent inside the phrase. We teach from confirmed rooms near St George's Square, close to Harold Wilson's statue outside the station, plus a spot on the Lindley and Marsh side, and we come to you for groups across Kirklees.

Why Choose Jazz in Huddersfield?

Theatre-Bred Style

Jazz is the language of the musical stage, and with the Lawrence Batley Theatre on the doorstep the show-facing polish always has somewhere real to point at.

Built on Musicality

In the home of the Huddersfield Choral Society and hcmf//, we teach you to hit the accent inside the phrase — the thing that separates jazz from simply moving on the beat.

Honest Beside the Schools

Adele Taylor Dance and Pennine Academy carry the town's graded jazz; ours is a separate, unaffiliated adult-beginner hour, and we happily send you their way for exams or a full pathway.

We Come to Kirklees

Town-centre and Lindley rooms plus a real come-to-you service mean Almondbury, Milnsbridge and the Colne Valley all get the same hour in a hall nearby.

Your Jazz Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1–4

Finding the Frame

What settles

The lifted jazz posture and clean isolations stop feeling posed and start feeling normal, so you look switched-on before you have even begun to travel.

Where we go next

The first across-the-floor steps — a chassé and a pas de bourrée — taught slowly enough to stay tidy rather than blur into a rush.

Month 2

Moving With Attack

What settles

You cover ground with intent, the travelling steps joining up smoothly and the arms arriving with the feet instead of trailing behind them.

Where we go next

A single clean pirouette prep and a controlled kick, introduced gently so balance and height build without strain.

Months 3–5

Carrying a Number

What settles

A whole short routine is yours to perform, phrased with the music and finished with the little flourishes that make jazz read from the back of the room.

Where we go next

Sharper dynamics — snap against sustain — and the beginnings of your own performance face, which is where confidence really shows.

Month 6+

Dancing It Like You

What settles

Turns, kicks and isolations feel dependable enough that you can stop managing them and simply enjoy the number as a piece of theatre.

Where we go next

Longer combinations, cleaner double turns for those who want them, and the polish that would hold up on the Lawrence Batley stage.

Jazz in Huddersfield FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Where in Huddersfield do the jazz classes run? +

Adult sessions are confirmed near St George's Square, a short walk from the railway station and Harold Wilson's statue, with a second spot on the Lindley and Marsh side. The precise room is confirmed once your place is held, and for groups we travel out across Kirklees.

How much is a session? +

Each class is £8 flat, handed over on the day — no term to pay for in advance, no membership and nothing renewing quietly behind the scenes. If you would rather book a private group or a class at your own venue, just ask and we will price it clearly.

How is jazz different from contemporary or street? +

Jazz is upright, sprung and show-facing — it comes from the musical stage, all sharp lines, kicks and turns aimed outward at an audience. Contemporary works lower and more inward through the floor, while street lives in groove and bounce. Different flavours, and you are welcome at all three.

Do I need to be flexible or already fit? +

No. We warm and open the body every week, and the kicks and turns are built up slowly from where you actually are. Plenty of people arrive stiff from a desk job and find the range comes with the weeks rather than being asked for on day one.

What should I wear? +

Leggings or joggers you can move and stretch in, and either jazz shoes, soft trainers or bare feet — we will steer you once we see the floor. Bring water; leave anything that restricts a high kick or a clean turn at home.

Is this like the jazz on Strictly? +

There is family resemblance in the sparkle and the show face, but Strictly leans on ballroom and Latin partnerwork. Our jazz is solo, theatre-rooted style — isolations, travelling steps and a short number danced to a musical-theatre track, no partner required.

Do you teach children's jazz? +

The drop-in is written for adults, though come-to-you workshops can be geared to younger groups on request. For ongoing graded children's jazz in Huddersfield, Adele Taylor Dance and Pennine Academy of Dance run classes and are the ones to contact.

Can you bring a jazz class to a group or event? +

Yes — come-to-you bookings are a big part of what we do. Give us a hall, a studio or a function room anywhere across Huddersfield and Kirklees and we tailor a jazz hour to the group, whether that is a birthday, a work social or a hen afternoon.

I did jazz as a child — is this too basic? +

The hour is pitched for beginners, but returners are welcome and we quietly stretch the combinations for anyone with mileage. If you want a genuinely advanced or exam-graded route, the town's established schools are the better fit and we will happily say so.
