Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Standing Tall
A gentle warm-up that wakes up the feet, ankles and spine, then a first look at how the arms carry and where the weight sits before we touch the barre.
At the Barre
Pliés, tendus and rises with a hand on the barre for support, learning turnout and alignment slowly so the shapes are built on something solid.
Into the Centre
Stepping away from the barre for balances, port de bras and the first simple travelling steps, finding stability with nothing to hold onto.
A Little Allegro
Small, light jumps and linking steps set to music, the part that turns barre exercises into something that actually looks and feels like dancing.
Reverence
A calm stretch and the traditional closing curtsey, the moment ballet uses to thank the room and let the body cool down properly.
About Ballet Classes in Plymouth
Ballet is the quiet engine under almost every other dance style — five positions, work at the barre, balance in the centre and the long line of the arms. People assume it is closed to anyone who did not start as a child, but the adult beginners' class exists precisely for the opposite: no background is expected, and everything is built up a single layer at a time from first position.
Plymouth is a good city to learn it in, with a real dance and theatre pedigree behind you. Plymouth Ballet School has taught RAD work across the city for years, from tiny beginners to adults and Silver Swans, while Theatre Royal Plymouth is one of the country's major producing houses and brings serious touring dance to the Hoe. Our adult rooms are in the city centre near the Theatre Royal and out toward Plymstock.
Getting to class is straightforward. Plymouth station sits beside the centre and the university, so the city-centre studio is a short walk; the Plymstock rooms are better reached by Citybus or a quick drive across the Laira, as there is no tram and the cross-city bus takes a realistic bit longer. Central evening parking is paid and busy, so plan a few minutes either way.

Why Choose Ballet in Plymouth?
Truly From Zero
The adult class opens at first position and never assumes a childhood of lessons. Most of the room walked in having never stood at a barre, so you are in the majority, not the exception.
Posture You Keep
Every exercise reinforces alignment from head to heel. Dancers notice the difference away from class — standing taller at a desk, moving more easily, aching less by the evening.
A City That Dances
With Theatre Royal Plymouth bringing national companies to the waterfront, there is always live ballet nearby to watch, and your teacher can tell you what is worth catching.
Gentle On the Body
Ballet is endlessly adaptable — every exercise can be scaled for your fitness and your joints, which is exactly why it suits people from seventeen to seventy-five.
Your Ballet Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
First Positions
Getting Started
The five positions, basic barre work and how to carry the arms, all taken slowly with a focus on understanding rather than performing.
What to Wear
Fitted leggings and a close top so the teacher can read your alignment; clean socks with grip are fine at first, soft slippers if you continue.
Away From the Barre
Centre Work
Balances, gentle pirouette preparations and simple adage, learning to hold your own line without the barre to lean on.
Reading Your Body
Turnout and placement begin to feel natural, and you start to notice your core switching on differently both in class and out of it.
Steps That Flow
Linking Movement
Travelling combinations across the floor and light allegro, so steps you once practised alone start to join into proper phrases.
Musical Phrasing
You begin to hear the music as a dancer does — landing on the count, breathing with the phrase, letting the dynamics shape the shape.
Dancing With Intention
Expressive Quality
Longer enchainements and richer port de bras, dancing with meaning behind the technique rather than only chasing the positions.
What Comes Next
An optional showcase, adding contemporary as a companion style, or stepping up to an improvers' class when you feel ready.
Ballet in Plymouth FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Am I too old to take up ballet in Plymouth? +
Not remotely. Our classes run for adults from seventeen to seventy-five, and ballet is one of the most adaptable forms there is — every exercise can be adjusted for your age, fitness and flexibility. Plenty of our dancers began well into adulthood.
Is ballet really suitable for a complete beginner? +
Yes. The adult class starts at first position and adds one idea at a time, with no dance history assumed. Most people in the room arrived having never taken a lesson, so nobody is racing ahead of you.
What should I wear to my first ballet class? +
Fitted clothing that lets the teacher see your alignment works best — leggings and a close-fitting top. Soft ballet slippers are ideal, but clean socks with a bit of grip are perfectly fine for your first few sessions. Skip jeans and baggy layers.
Where in Plymouth do the ballet classes take place? +
Our adult rooms are in the city centre near the Theatre Royal and out toward Plymstock. The exact studio is confirmed when you book; the central one is walkable from Plymouth station, the Plymstock one is an easy bus or drive.
How much does an adult ballet class cost? +
Classes are £8 on the door, paid week by week. There is no membership and no sign-up process — simply pay as you go. Once the full timetable is running we will add block-booking discounts for regulars.
Do I need to buy ballet shoes straight away? +
No. Clean socks with grip are all you need for a first session. If you decide to keep going, soft leather or canvas slippers are a small one-off cost and the only real kit ballet asks of you.
How is ballet different from contemporary dance? +
Ballet follows a codified classical vocabulary with set positions and names, danced upright and turned out. Contemporary is freer, uses the floor and plays with weight. They complement each other, and many dancers happily do both.
Will ballet help with my posture and back? +
It is one of the best things you can do for it. Every exercise reinforces alignment through the spine and strengthens the deep muscles that hold you upright, which is why so many people notice they stand and sit better within weeks.
Is there anywhere to watch professional ballet in Plymouth? +
There is — Theatre Royal Plymouth is a major producing house and regularly hosts touring national companies. Watching live is one of the best ways to learn, and your teacher can point you to what is worth booking.
