Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm and Grounded
We loosen the spine, ribs and hips and settle the posture belly dance works from — soft knees, long back — so the isolations to come have somewhere to move from.
Finding the Hips
The signature moves start here: hip drops, lifts and slow figure-eights, taken one at a time and slowly, until your hips learn to move on their own without the rest of you joining in.
Shimmies and Layers
We add the shimmy — that fast, loose vibration — and begin layering it over a slow step, which is where the style starts to feel like the dance you pictured.
Arms and Framing
Soft, snaking arms and hand framing join the hips, turning separate moves into something graceful and whole rather than a checklist of isolations.
A Little Routine
The night's moves flow together into a short sequence set to Arabic rhythm, followed by a gentle stretch for the back and hips you've just discovered.
About Belly Dance Classes in Sunderland
Belly dance — raqs sharqi in its Egyptian home — is built on isolations: teaching one part of the body to move while the rest stays still. It looks intricate, but it's learned one small piece at a time, which is why it suits complete beginners and why it's so kind to bodies of every age and shape.
It's also quietly brilliant for you: the hip and torso work builds core strength and eases a stiff lower back, and almost everyone leaves standing a little taller and feeling more at home in their own skin. There's no performance to dread and no mirror-perfect ideal to match — the class is about how the movement feels, not how it's judged.
Our beginners' sessions are based in Sunderland city centre near Keel Square, with the Tyne and Wear Metro and National Rail both calling at the station a few minutes away. And because a belly dance class travels well, we also bring it to groups right across Wearside and East Durham when you'd rather we came to you.

Why Choose Belly Dance in Sunderland?
Strength You Don't Notice
All that hip and torso work quietly builds core stability and eases lower-back stiffness — a proper workout that never feels like one.
Every Body Welcome
Belly dance has always celebrated real bodies of every age and size. There's no shape you need to be first — you turn up exactly as you are.
Confidence That Sticks
Learning to move with your own body rather than against it does something lasting; most people leave a class walking taller than they came in.
We'll Come to You
Hen parties and private groups across Wearside and East Durham can have the whole class brought to their venue, from Roker to Washington — no trip into town needed.
Your Belly Dance Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Waking the Hips
First Moves
Posture, hip drops and lifts, and slow figure-eights — the core isolations, learned gently and one at a time.
What to Wear
Leggings or comfy joggers and a fitted top, so you can see your hips work; bare feet or soft shoes. A coin scarf is fun but never required.
Adding the Shimmy
The Vibration
The shimmy comes in — loose knees, relaxed hips — and slowly steadies into something you can switch on when you want it.
Layering Up
Placing a shimmy over a slow step or a walk, the first taste of doing two things at once that belly dance is built on.
Grace and Flow
The Arms
Snaking arms and hand framing join in, and the separate moves start to link into something that genuinely flows.
Musicality
Hearing the Arabic rhythms and the drum solo, so your hips answer the music instead of a memorised count.
Dancing It Fully
Your Own Routine
Stringing moves into longer sequences and letting your own feel colour them — the point it becomes properly yours.
Where Next
Some explore props like veil or cane; others simply keep coming for the strength, the friends and the sheer enjoyment of it.
Belly Dance in Sunderland FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need any experience or natural rhythm? +
Neither. Every move is broken down slowly and built up piece by piece, so rhythm you didn't think you had tends to appear within a few weeks. The beginners' class is designed for people who've never danced at all.
Is belly dance suitable for my age or body shape? +
Completely. The dance has always welcomed every age and size — that's part of its heart. There's no ideal figure to have and nothing to slim into first; you come exactly as you are and the movement fits you, not the other way round.
What should I wear to class? +
Comfy leggings or joggers and a fitted top so you can actually see your hips and waist move. Bare feet or soft flat shoes work best. A jingly coin scarf around the hips is great fun but absolutely optional — plenty borrow the feeling before they buy one.
Where in Sunderland are the classes? +
In the city centre near Keel Square, a few minutes from Park Lane and Sunderland station, so the Metro and rail both bring you almost to the door. The exact studio is confirmed once you book, and we add sessions elsewhere across Wearside as groups form.
How much does a class cost? +
£8 on the night, and that's the lot — no membership and nothing to sign. You pay for the classes you make, and a cheaper block rate arrives once the regular Sunderland slot is running.
Will I have to perform in front of anyone? +
Not unless you ever want to. There's no show hanging over the class and no mirror you're being marked against — it's your hour, for how the dance feels. Any performing is a choice you'd make later, never an expectation.
Is belly dance a proper workout? +
More than it looks. The constant hip, waist and core control builds real strength and stamina and loosens a tight lower back, all while you're concentrating on the moves rather than the effort — you feel it the next day.
Can men join, or is it women only? +
Our beginners' classes are open to everyone, though in practice they're mostly women and have a warm, easy, no-judgement feel. If you'd like a women-only private group for a hen or a birthday, we can arrange exactly that.
Can you bring a belly dance class to a hen party? +
Yes — it's one of our most-booked hen sessions. We bring everything to your venue anywhere across Wearside and East Durham, from Seaburn to Houghton-le-Spring, scarves and all. Add your date and group size to the form and we'll take it from there.
