Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 min

Warm-Up & Grip

We mobilise the shoulders, wrists and core, then learn the basic hand grips and how skin holds to a pole. Getting the grip trustworthy first is what makes everything above it feel safe.

10–20 min

Spins Near the Floor

Your first spins happen low and slow, feet never far off the ground, so you feel the momentum and the landing before height is ever part of the picture.

20–35 min

Holds & Engaging the Back

You learn to switch on the back and core and hold a supported shape, the quiet strength work that later turns a scramble up the pole into a smooth climb.

35–50 min

Your First Climb

A short, controlled climb of a metre or two with a mat below and a taught descent. It is the moment most people surprise themselves — the strength was already there.

50–60 min

Link & Stretch Out

We join a spin and a pose into one small sequence so it feels like dancing, then stretch the shoulders and hips properly to finish.

About Pole Dance Classes in York

Pole dance classes in York begin at the floor rather than the ceiling. The first thing you learn is how to hold the pole and how to move around it low down, so the strength and the confidence arrive together and nothing is ever asked of you before your body is ready for it. It blends genuine fitness with a bit of performance, which is exactly why people who thought they had no upper-body strength end up hooked.

You need no experience and no starting strength — that is what the class is for. Sessions run in a warm, private studio with mats down, a flat £8 paid on the night and no block to buy. We teach centrally, near Coppergate and the Shambles, and over on the Clifton and Bootham side, with private group sessions able to travel out across York and the Vale of York.

We are straight about what pole is in York. It is studio-based and instructor-led here — a small, committed community rather than anything you will stumble on during a night out — so a proper weekly class is the way in. We run this one ourselves and point you at nothing we are not part of.

Why Choose Pole Dance in York?

Strength that shows up fast

Pole is real functional training for the arms, back and core, and most people notice they are stronger within a few weeks without ever setting foot in a gym.

Taught safely, at your pace

Mats down, clear progressions and nothing pushed before you are ready — height and tricks only come once the grip and the holds underneath them are solid.

No strength to begin with

You do not arrive able to do pole — you leave able to. Complete beginners with no fitness background are exactly who these sessions are built around.

Central York or your venue

Sessions sit near Coppergate or over the Clifton side, room confirmed on booking, with private groups able to travel across York and the Vale of York.

Your Pole Dance Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

01

Weeks 1–2 — Getting a Grip

The pole stops feeling slippery

Once your grips are reliable the whole thing feels less intimidating, and low spins start to be genuinely fun rather than nerve-wracking.

You find muscles you forgot

A pleasant ache in the back and shoulders is the first sign the strength is coming — and it comes quickly at this stage.

02

Weeks 3–6 — Spins & Holds

Spins link together

Two or three spins start to flow into each other with a controlled walk between, and it begins to look like a routine rather than isolated moves.

Holds feel secure

Supported poses you could barely engage at first become somewhere you can pause and breathe, which is the foundation for climbing.

03

Months 2–3 — Climbing & Combining

Height stops being scary

A controlled climb and a safe slide down become routine, and being off the floor feels like a choice rather than a leap.

Short sequences of your own

You string spins, a climb and a pose into a little sequence to music, and the fitness underneath it all is noticeably there.

04

Ongoing — Your Own Style

Strength keeps compounding

Each session banks a bit more control, so harder shapes that looked impossible in week one quietly come within reach.

Keep going, no strings

At a flat £8 a drop-in with nothing to sign up to, you set the pace and simply come back for the next one when it suits you.

Pole Dance in York FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I need to be fit or strong to start? +

No. The class exists precisely to build that strength — we start on the floor and add height only once your grip and holds can support it. Most people arrive with no pole or gym background at all.

Will I get bruises? +

A few small ones early on are normal — pole dancers cheerfully call them 'pole kisses', and they fade as your body adapts to the grip and pressure. Nothing dramatic, and they settle quickly once you are a regular.

What should I wear? +

Shorts and a vest or T-shirt — pole needs bare skin on the arms and legs to grip, so leggings actually make it harder. Come with no lotion or oil on, as they stop the pole holding.

Is it a fitness class or a performance class? +

Both, honestly. You get a genuine strength and cardio workout, but everything is aimed at a move or a short sequence, so it never feels like reps in a gym — it feels like learning to dance.

How much does it cost? +

A flat £8 on the night, the same as every class across our York programme. Pay as you go, with no membership and nothing to commit to in advance.

Do I need my own pole? +

No. The studio poles are set up and checked for you — you just turn up. Plenty of people fit a pole at home eventually, but that is entirely optional and never needed to learn.

Is there a pole scene in York? +

It is studio-based and instructor-led rather than a nightlife thing — a small, dedicated pole community centred on classes like this one. We run our own weekly session and are not affiliated with any other studio.

Where in York are the classes? +

Centrally, near Coppergate and the Shambles, and over on the Clifton and Bootham side, with the exact studio confirmed when you book. Private group sessions can travel across York and the Vale of York to a suitable space.

Could I book it for a group or hen do? +

Yes. Friends are welcome in the ordinary class, and for an occasion we run private beginner pole sessions shaped around your group and booked as a one-off rather than the weekly drop-in.
