Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Posture and Hold
Before any step, you set the frame: standing tall, finding a comfortable partner hold and learning where the weight sits — the quiet backbone every ballroom figure balances on.
One Dance's Basic
The night's dance — a waltz box, a quickstep chassé or a cha-cha check — is broken to its bare bones and walked slowly until the timing stops being a puzzle.
Lead and Follow
Paired up in a light hold, you try giving and reading the gentlest of signals; partners rotate around the room, so a wrong turn is shared and gone in a moment.
Adding a Figure
One turn or underarm move is stacked onto the basic, just enough to make the dance travel and feel like more than a repeated square.
Around the Floor
The pieces join into a short routine you dance the length of the room to a full track, moving anticlockwise the way a real ballroom does.
About Ballroom Classes in Aberdeen
Ballroom is partner dancing with the manners left in — a shared frame, a lead and a follow, and a handful of dances (waltz, quickstep, foxtrot, cha-cha) that have outlasted every fashion since. A beginners' class assumes nothing: you learn to stand, to hold and to move together one small step at a time.
Aberdeen has kept its ballroom habit better than most. Academy Street Dance Studio and the city's Ballroom Dance Studio carry the partner-dance thread, and the Beach Ballroom out on the seafront has sprung its dance floor since 1929 — a genuine piece of Granite City history rather than a television set. Our beginners' hour runs from a city-centre studio near Union Street.
Reaching class is simple. Aberdeen station sits at Union Square in the heart of the centre, First Aberdeen buses cover the short hop from most neighbourhoods, and there is no tram to figure out. The beach and its ballroom lie a brisk walk east of the centre, weather permitting.

Why Choose Ballroom in Aberdeen?
Come Alone or Paired
Book on your own and rotate through the class, or hold onto your partner all evening. Either way it is an hour on the floor rather than time spent watching.
Several Dances, One Class
Waltz, quickstep, foxtrot and cha-cha rotate through the term, so you sample the swing-and-sway ones and the sharper Latin ones before choosing a favourite.
Real Local Heritage
Aberdeen kept a proper ballroom culture, right down to the Beach Ballroom's sprung 1929 floor — the steps you learn belong to a living city tradition.
Gentler Than It Looks
The formality is only on the surface; the room is friendly, the pace forgiving, and the practised are firmly outnumbered by people finding their frame for the first time.
Your Ballroom Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Frame and Footing
Early Weeks
You build a comfortable hold, learn to move forward and back without watching your feet, and take the basic of your first dance at a walking pace.
What to Wear
Smart-casual clothes you can move in and shoes with a smooth sole that slides — leather soles are ideal; leave gripping trainers at home for the turns' sake.
Moving Together
Give and Read
Offering a clear lead and following one back, keeping the frame steady while your own feet carry on and a partner's do the same.
Timing by Ear
Letting the beat of a waltz or a cha-cha set your steps, rather than counting silently through the whole track.
A Bigger Vocabulary
More Figures
Turns, underarm moves and progressive steps that let a dance travel the room, joined into sequences you can string together on the night.
More Than One Dance
Enough of the waltz, quickstep and cha-cha to switch between them as the music changes, instead of knowing only a single routine.
Owning the Floor
Dancing Out
Comfortable leading or following a stranger, adjusting to a busy floor and keeping the line-of-dance moving without a stumble.
Where It Leads
Sharper technique, a social or medal test if you fancy a target, and the confidence to dance anywhere from a wedding to the Beach Ballroom.
Ballroom in Aberdeen FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need a partner for ballroom classes? +
No. The class rotates partners throughout, so arriving alone just means the whole room to dance with. If you would rather stay with the person you came with, that works perfectly well too.
Where in Aberdeen are the ballroom classes held? +
Our beginners' ballroom runs from a partner studio in the city centre, a short step from Union Street, with the exact room confirmed on booking. Aberdeen's wider partner-dance scene includes Academy Street and the historic Beach Ballroom on the seafront.
How much is a ballroom class in Aberdeen? +
Each drop-in is £8, settled on the night, with nothing to join and no term to sign. Once a fixed weekly slot beds in at your nearest studio, we add a cheaper rate for booking a run of weeks at once.
What should I wear on my feet? +
A smooth-soled shoe that slides and turns cleanly — leather soles or proper dance shoes are ideal. Trainers grip the floor and fight the turns, so save them for another style; smart-casual clothes you can move in do the rest.
Which dances will I actually learn? +
The beginners' term rotates the ballroom staples — waltz, quickstep and foxtrot — with the Latin cha-cha in the mix, so you get a taste of both the gliding dances and the sharper ones before settling on a favourite.
I've got two left feet — is ballroom really for me? +
Honestly, yes. Everything is walked slowly at a beginner's pace, one small figure at a time, and the room is mostly other first-timers. The frame does a lot of the work once you stop fighting it.
Isn't ballroom a bit formal and stuffy? +
Only on paper. The etiquette is light, the atmosphere friendly, and the point is a good time on the floor — Aberdeen's ballroom tradition is a sociable one, not a stiff one.
What's the story with the Beach Ballroom? +
It is a genuine Aberdeen landmark on the seafront, dancing on a sprung floor laid in 1929 — a real piece of the city's ballroom history. We teach in a city-centre studio, but it shows how deep the local habit runs.
Can you teach ballroom for a wedding or private group? +
Yes — we run one-off ballroom and first-dance sessions for weddings, hen dos and groups, in a city-centre studio or at your place; we come to you across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. Send over a date, numbers and a postcode and we will price it as a single flat rate.
