Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Get on the Beat
An easy full-body warm-up ridden over the track — shoulders, chest and knees finding the pulse — so you are already inside the music by the time the teaching starts.
A Classic Social Step
One old-school step a week — the Roger Rabbit, the Bart Simpson, the Steve Martin — pulled apart to its real mechanics rather than left as a vague impression.
Piece Together a Combo
Those steps get stitched over a hip-hop cut into a short combination, so you walk out with something whole to run instead of a bag of loose moves.
Talk Back to the Music
Brief improv drills where you learn to catch the snare and the kick and answer them with movement, growing your nerve without leaning on a fixed routine.
Circle and Wind Down
An open circle for whoever fancies a moment in the middle — take it or leave it — then a proper stretch to shut the hour down.
About Hip-Hop Classes in Aberdeen
Street dance is the big umbrella; hip-hop is one branch beneath it. Where a street class tours popping, house, breaking and locking in turn, hip-hop keeps its focus on the social grooves, the named party steps and the set choreography that grew up beside the records. This hour stays on that single branch, so the material has room to sink in properly rather than being sampled and dropped.
Aberdeen brings real pedigree. From 89–91 Hutcheon Street, Danscentre has taught poppin', lockin' and breakin' since 1987; Academy Street Dance keeps its own city floor; and Citymoves threads community and professional work through the centre. Alongside them we run an adults-only hour devoted to hip-hop itself, held just off Union Street with a second space over toward Rosemount and Gallowgate.
Turning up with no timing and no combos behind you is completely fine — that is exactly who the beginner hour exists for. It costs £8, settled at the door, with nothing to sign or commit to. First Aberdeen buses drop you close; the city runs no tram or metro, so build in a little slack when the weather turns. Anyone under eighteen dances in separate, staffed junior sessions.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Aberdeen?
A Whole Hour, One Branch
Instead of sampling every street style in turn, we spend the full session inside hip-hop — its groove, its social steps, its choreography — which is why the learning actually holds.
Foundations Run Deep Here
Danscentre has drilled poppin', lockin' and breakin' on Hutcheon Street since 1987, so this is a city already carrying the groundwork in its bones.
Urban Culture on the Walls
Every year Nuart turns Aberdeen's granite into a street-art trail, and that same culture runs under the tracks and the movement you meet in class.
Under-18s Kept Separate
Younger dancers get their own staffed, age-banded sessions with vetted teachers, run well apart from the adult beginner hour.
Your Hip-Hop Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Onto the Beat
Where You Begin
Simple grooves, a rock or two and your first social step. We aim for feel and timing well before anything looks sharp.
Kit for Day One
Loose, comfy clothing and flat trainers with a touch of padding. Water in the bag, and no fretting about how you look.
Stock the Cupboard
Wider Range
More social steps and grooves, plus the counting that lets you chain them into something longer than a single move.
Trying Improv
Short guided improv eases you into moving without a plan — the very heart of how hip-hop actually works.
Sit in the Pocket
Hearing the Track
Spotting the accents in a song and dropping your moves onto them, so the dancing looks meant rather than merely guessed.
Bigger Combos
Longer choreography that gathers several weeks of work into one piece you can run right through.
Find Your Signature
Your Stamp
You start bending the steps toward something recognisably yours instead of copying whoever stands at the front.
Next Steps
Local jams and battle nights, guest sessions, or a move over into our street and commercial classes.
Hip-Hop in Aberdeen FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
What's the difference between your hip-hop class and a street dance class in Aberdeen? +
Street dance is the catch-all that cycles through popping, house, breaking and locking. Hip-hop is one lane inside it, and we stay in that lane all hour — the grooves, the social steps, the choreography. Plenty of dancers study both side by side.
I've genuinely never danced — is that a problem? +
Not in the least. Every beginner hour opens on the simplest groove going and grows from there. The room is mostly people who arrived with nothing behind them, so a first-timer never sticks out.
Where in Aberdeen do the hip-hop classes run? +
Partner studios just off Union Street in the centre, plus a second base toward Rosemount and Gallowgate. First Aberdeen buses stop near both, and we send the precise address once your place is booked.
How much does hip-hop cost per class in Aberdeen? +
Eight pounds a session, handed over on the day. No joining fee, no block up front, no contract — you come along on the weeks that suit your diary.
Do you actually teach foundations, or just copy videos? +
Foundations lead every time. We pull each social step and groove apart, name its pieces and rebuild it, then use that to make choreography — so the movement makes sense to you rather than being aped off a screen.
Is there a hip-hop scene near Aberdeen? +
Yes. Danscentre, Academy Street Dance and Citymoves all keep the city's street and hip-hop life going, and cyphers, battle nights and guest workshops surface around the north-east. Your teacher will nudge you toward the next one.
Will I be pushed to freestyle in front of everyone? +
No pushing here. The improv drills arrive softly and the end circle is always a choose-to-join. Funnily enough, once a few weeks pass most people are itching for a go anyway.
What should I put on for the first class? +
Anything you can move easily in — a tee and joggers are spot on — with flat trainers that carry a bit of cushion. Style is part of the culture, so beyond the basics, wear whatever feels right for you.
Do you run sessions for kids and teens as well? +
We do — under-eighteens train in their own age-banded, staffed groups with vetted teachers, kept clear of the adult hour. Flag the right age band on the enquiry form and we'll slot them in.
