Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Ignite and Aim Out

Ten minutes to spike the heart rate and flick the attitude switch on. Joints freed, energy already pushed outward — this style performs to a camera that is not there yet, so even the warm-up looks up and off the floor.

10–25 mins

Learn the Record

No steps until we have pulled the track apart — its accents, its dropouts, the little pockets a move can nestle into. Once the song lives in your ear the counting looks after itself and the routine has something to grip.

25–40 mins

Build the Piece

This week's choreography, handed over in small helpings and assembled slowly. Every shape is tidied at low speed before the tempo lifts, so nobody trails half a phrase behind the music once it all connects up.

40–50 mins

Give It a Target

With the moves settled in the body, we give them somewhere to point. Lock onto a single spot across the room and dance at it — the version that reads as accurate and the version that reads as commanding are the same steps, and projection is the whole difference.

50–60 mins

One All-Out Pass

We close on a couple of full-throttle run-throughs played as if the shoot were live, then bring everything back to earth. Filming is opt-in and for your eyes only, and the playback tends to be where people jump furthest.

About Commercial Classes in Aberdeen

Commercial is pop made physical — the locked-in unison of a chart video, the number that opens an arena tour, the routine a group performs on Saturday-night telly. Odds are you have already copied slabs of it at home without a name for one move. The class supplies the names, lets the choreography settle until it feels like yours, and drills the truth that your projection counts every bit as much as your footwork, because the whole form exists to be filmed.

Aberdeen backs it up with a real scene. Danscentre runs street and commercial from Hutcheon Street with SQA and RAD credentials behind it; Academy Street Dance Studio teaches and hires across town; and Citymoves, the agency driving the DanceLive festival, keeps professional and community doors open. Screen-facing dance is far from a novelty in the Granite City.

Pop is in the water here, too — Annie Lennox was raised in the city long before the Eurythmics, and each year Nuart sprays a globally followed street-art trail across the granite, so bold, camera-hungry movement fits the place. We use rooms around the centre and the Gallowgate–Hutcheon Street pocket, confirmed once you book. The train pulls in at Union Square, First Aberdeen runs the buses, and with no tram in the city you either stroll uphill to Gallowgate or hop a service.

Why Choose Commercial in Aberdeen?

A Doorway to Crew Dancing

This is where dancing as a group begins. Aberdeen has genuine teams and showcase nights you can move up into, so once a single weekly class stops being enough the next rung is already waiting — and your teacher will point you at it.

Cardio Wearing a Disguise

Take a whole routine at speed and it quietly adds up to a hard workout, minus the treadmill and the rep-counting. You leave hot, winded and grinning, and over a few weeks fitter than you ever set out to be.

Led by People in the Job

Whoever runs the room earns a living from this exact thing — video shoots, live tours, TV slots — so the material lands on you shaped by real work rather than filed down for a classroom.

Your Ear Gets Sharper

So much of this is timing — catching the hit, the drop and the held breath in a song and hanging movement on them. Once that instinct sharpens it quietly lifts every other style you go on to try.

Your Commercial Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

First Month

Sharp Before Speedy

Accuracy Wins

The first weeks reward getting it right over getting it quick. Land a shape controlled and correct and the tempo climbs by itself soon enough — hurrying at this stage buys you absolutely nothing.

What to Wear

Gear you are happy to sweat through and smooth-soled trainers that slide rather than grip. Pack layers to peel off as you warm up and a full bottle of water — it will go.

Weeks 5–11

Adding the Flavour

Texture, Not Just Timing

The counts stop being a to-do list and gain some attitude — hits punched dead on the beat, silences held on purpose, the seasoning that tells the real thing from a rough copy.

Faster Recall

Snapping up choreography at pace is a trainable knack, and this is roughly where it starts showing — steps that stumped you in week one now go in after a go or two.

Months 3–5

Delivering It

Projecting Out

The job shifts from recalling the routine to selling it — chin lifted, energy hurled at an imaginary lens, and the output held steady the whole way through instead of sagging in the middle.

Longer, Harder Sets

The pieces stretch out and the links turn awkward, edging toward the sort of thing a genuine shoot or a live set would drop in front of you.

Beyond

Crew-Ready

Composed Under Pressure

You stay clean when the heat is on, hold your line in unison and pick up fresh material fast — exactly the kit a performance team or a filmed routine is looking for.

Where It Goes

From here it is the city's showcase nights, performance teams and open auditions, and whoever teaches you will steer you to whichever ones are worth an evening.

Commercial in Aberdeen FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

What separates commercial from street or hip-hop? +

Picture street and hip-hop as the source — the freestyle, the culture, the origin of it all. Commercial polishes that up for a screen, squaring the loose edges into matching lines built to look crisp on film. They bleed into each other constantly, and heaps of dancers train in both.

Can a total beginner keep pace? +

With no trouble — the whole class is aimed at first-timers. Nobody assumes a dance background, and lifting routines quickly is a skill the sessions grow in you week by week, not something you have to walk in already owning.

What tracks will we dance to? +

Chiefly whatever is topping the charts — pop laced with R&B and Afrobeats, plus the one song nobody can dodge that fortnight. We swap them out often so nothing stales, and in Annie Lennox's home city the odd homegrown classic naturally slips into the mix.

Do you film us in class? +

Usually only the final run-through, and purely so you can watch it back — nothing exposes a lazy arm faster than your own footage. We ask everyone first, joining in never depends on a yes, and no clip goes anywhere unless the whole room agrees.

Where in Aberdeen are the classes? +

We hire rooms around the centre and the Gallowgate–Hutcheon Street dance pocket, each chosen for sprung space and mirrors, with the exact one confirmed on booking. Most are a short walk or a First Aberdeen bus from the station beside Union Square.

What does a commercial class in Aberdeen cost? +

A session is eight pounds, card or cash at the door. No membership, nothing renewing behind your back — you cover the hour you turn up for, full stop. Once a fixed weekly slot settles nearby, a prepaid block comes out a touch cheaper per class.

What do I wear and bring? +

Loose, stretchy clothes you do not mind sweating in, smooth-soled trainers and a bottle of water — that is genuinely it. Leave anything stiff or specialist at home. And if what you actually want is dancing in heels, that is its own separate class.

Where might I perform later on? +

Plenty of ways. The city stays busy with crew nights and showcases, and Citymoves' DanceLive hands dance a real annual stage. We also stage relaxed showcases as a soft first outing, so you never leap straight to a big crowd.

Can you run a commercial class for an Aberdeen hen or group? +

Definitely — a favourite group and hen booking is a music-video number set to whatever act the party cannot stop playing. Drop your numbers and a date on the form, or take a look at our commercial hen party page.
