Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Get Moving

We open on the groove — the bounce and rocking weight that sits under locking, popping and the rest — worked until the whole class locks onto the same rhythm.

10–25 mins

This Week's Pillar

A single foundation heads each session, be it locking, popping, top rock or house, so week by week you cover the entire street family properly.

25–40 mins

Make It a Routine

That focus style gets assembled into a short piece over funk, hip-hop or house — the moment the drills finally become real dancing.

40–50 mins

Freestyle Time

Structured improv with low-key optional battles for anyone game, quietly building the nerve to move without a script.

50–60 mins

Circle Up & Stretch

An entirely optional cypher where whatever you bring gets cheered on, then a proper stretch to finish.

About Street Dance Classes in Aberdeen

Aberdeen's street scene runs deeper than outsiders expect. Danscentre has taught breakin from Hutcheon Street since 1987, folding locking and popping into its hip-hop; Academy Street Dance Studio adds all-ages classes and parties; and Citymoves runs community and professional routes from its city studios. Whoever leads your session dances for real — this comes off years on the floor, not a printed lesson plan.

A term rotates through the foundations — spells on locking and popping, spells on breakin, spells on house — because the aim is fluency across the whole language, not one showpiece. Hip-hop runs as a class of its own, zeroing in on grooves, party dances and set choreography. It fits the city: Nuart Aberdeen paints international street art straight onto the granite walls each year, so urban culture is already part of the streetscape here.

Each age band trains in its own room — kids, teens and adults kept apart, every class led by a DBS-checked professional. The studios sit centrally around Union Street and the Gallowgate, an easy walk from Union Square station or a First Aberdeen bus from Rosemount, Bridge of Don and the West End; there's no tram or metro up here, and the granite streets are made for walking. Drop-in sessions are £8.

Why Choose Street Dance in Aberdeen?

Taught by Real Dancers

Your teachers come out of Aberdeen's own scene — dancers who breakin, lock and pop for real and pass on what they genuinely use.

Every Style in Rotation

Term by term you cycle through locking, popping, breakin and house, trying the full spread before committing to one.

Kids and Teens Welcome

Age-grouped children's and teens' classes led by DBS-checked professionals — some of the most-requested sessions on our Aberdeen timetable.

A City That Moves

Danscentre has taught breakin here since 1987 and Nuart paints the granite each year — street culture is already rooted in Aberdeen.

Your Street Dance Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

Lock Into the Groove

Getting Started

We begin on the groove and an early taste of top rock and locking. The goal for now is finding the beat and the nerve to move, not polish.

What to Wear

Whatever's comfy to move in, plus flat trainers that cushion a bit. Style is welcome but never marked — come as you are.

Month 2–3

Meet the Foundations

Foundations

Cycling through popping, locking, house and breakin, letting each one settle before the next takes over.

First Freestyle

Gentle improv exercises that grow the confidence to dance off-plan — the real doorway into street.

Month 4–6

Your Signature

Finding a Voice

Harder routines and longer freestyles, where you start folding styles together into a look that's clearly your own.

In the Cypher

At home in the circle and one of the crew — street is something you belong to, not just a class you show up for.

Month 6+

Into Aberdeen's Scene

Advanced Practice

Fluent across several styles, happy to battle, and inventing combinations nobody showed you — the originality the culture prizes.

What Comes Next

Aberdeen and North-East jams, battles, our own competitions, or committing hard to the one style that claims you.

Street Dance in Aberdeen FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Total beginner here — is a street class going to be over my head? +

Not at all. Everyone starts on the groove — that bounce and rock anyone can find — and builds from there. Beginners are the majority of the Aberdeen starter class, so you'll be in good company from minute one.

What actually separates street dance from hip-hop? +

Street dance is the umbrella — locking, popping, breakin, house and more, rotated across the weeks. The separate hip-hop class narrows in on hip-hop itself: its grooves, party dances and choreography. Loads of dancers here do both and reckon each feeds the other.

Has Aberdeen actually got a street scene? +

More than you'd guess. Danscentre has taught breakin from Hutcheon Street since 1987, Academy Street Dance Studio and Citymoves add more, and Nuart paints street art onto the granite every year — so once you've found your feet there's a real local world to step into.

Where in Aberdeen do the street classes run? +

At central studios around Union Street and the Gallowgate, walkable from Union Square station or a short First Aberdeen bus from Rosemount and Bridge of Don, with children's sessions reaching out into the suburbs too. There's no tram or metro; the exact studio is confirmed once you register.

How much is a street dance class in Aberdeen? +

£8 flat for a drop-in — no joining fee, no contract, just show up. Once a fixed weekly slot lands at your nearest studio, we'll add discounted blocks for regulars.

What should I wear? +

Loose gear you can move in and flat trainers with a bit of cushioning. Past that, street dance celebrates personal style, so turn up as yourself — no uniform, no dress code.

Will I get to try breakin? +

Definitely — the rotation includes top rock, foundational footwork and freezes right beside locking, popping and house. And with Danscentre coaching breakin in the city since 1987, there's a genuine local lineage waiting if it grabs you.

Do I have to freestyle in front of everyone? +

Never put on the spot. We ease in with low-pressure guided exercises, and stepping into the cypher is always optional. Funnily enough, once a few weeks pass, most dancers find themselves itching for a go.

Can you bring street dance to a school, party or hen do? +

Yes — we've a travelling street team covering Aberdeen as well. School workshops, birthday sessions, youth-group classes and a street dance hen party all head out across the city and wider Aberdeenshire. Use the form and tell us the venue.
