Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Posture & Warm-Up
Alignment first: neutral spine, engaged core, soft shoulders — the frame every ballet step hangs on — with gentle mobilisation for ankles and hips.
Barre Work
Pliés, tendus and rises with the barre for support. This is ballet's grammar, and taking it slowly is what makes everything else possible.
Centre Practice
The same movements away from the barre, where balance becomes the real challenge — plus port de bras to get arms and eyes working with your legs.
Travelling Steps
Ballet walks, chassés and small jumps across the floor, building the coordination that turns positions into actual dancing.
Reverence & Stretch
The traditional bow to close the class, then a long, well-earned stretch while your teacher recaps what to practise at home.
About Ballet Classes in Birmingham
Birmingham is one of very few cities anywhere with a world-class company in residence: Birmingham Royal Ballet performs at the Hippodrome, right in the Southside theatre district. Our ballet classes in Birmingham put you a few streets from that stage — same art form, zero pressure, and teachers who know exactly how to start an adult from nothing.
Classes keep the classical shape — barre, centre, travelling steps, reverence — scaled honestly for beginners. You work on posture, turnout and balance from the first week, because technique is the whole point of ballet and the reason it changes how you stand, walk and carry yourself long after the class ends.
Sessions run at partner studios in Southside and the Jewellery Quarter, with the exact address confirmed on booking. New Street and the Metro tram make the journey easy without a car — worth knowing, since Birmingham's Clean Air Zone charges older vehicles driving into the city centre.

Why Choose Ballet in Birmingham?
World-Class on Your Doorstep
Birmingham Royal Ballet dances at the Hippodrome, minutes from our studios — take class on a weeknight, then go watch the very best do it.
Posture That Follows You Home
Barre work quietly rebuilds how you stand and move — most adults notice the difference at their desk before they notice it in the mirror.
Never Too Late
Adult beginner ballet is one of our fastest-growing classes. Nobody is a former child prodigy — everyone is starting roughly where you are.
Proper Kids' Training
Children's groups taught by DBS-checked professionals, with technique built correctly and kindly from the very first plié.
Your Ballet Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Learning to Stand
Getting Started
The five positions, your first pliés and tendus, and a new relationship with your own posture. The barre holds you up while you learn.
What to Wear
Leggings or joggers with a fitted top, so your teacher can see your alignment. Socks or bare feet are fine at first — ballet shoes can come later.
The Barre Makes Sense
Technique
Pliés deepen, tendus sharpen and the French names stop sounding like a menu. Balance in the centre improves week on week.
Strength
Ballet is strength training in disguise — calves, core and back all wake up, and rises stop wobbling quite so theatrically.
Joining the Dots
Combinations
Barre and centre exercises link into longer sequences, and you start dancing through the steps instead of thinking through them.
Watching Differently
A night at the Hippodrome hits differently now — you can see the technique working inside the artistry, and it makes the show better.
A Dancer's Habits
Advanced Practice
Adagio work, pirouette preparation and small allegro with genuine control — the satisfying stage where progress starts compounding.
What Comes Next
Graded work for those who like structure, pointe preparation for those who earn it, or simply the weekly class that holds everything else together.
Ballet in Birmingham FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Where in Birmingham do the ballet classes take place? +
At partner studios in Southside — the theatre district around Hurst Street, near the Hippodrome — and the Jewellery Quarter, with the exact address confirmed when you book. Both are an easy walk or tram ride from New Street.
What do ballet classes in Birmingham cost? +
Each drop-in class is £8, with no joining fee and no term commitment. Discounted blocks will be offered once your nearest studio's weekly schedule is confirmed.
Can I start ballet as a complete beginner adult? +
Absolutely — our beginner classes assume nothing. You will be shown every position and step from scratch, and the barre supports you while your balance and strength catch up. Most of the room started exactly this way.
What should I wear, and do I need ballet shoes? +
Leggings or joggers and a reasonably fitted top so your teacher can check your alignment. Start in socks or bare feet; soft ballet flats are an inexpensive upgrade once you know you are staying.
Am I too old for ballet? +
No. Our adult classes run from 17 to 75, and ballet is one of the best things you can do for posture, bone strength and balance at any point in that range. The barre does not check birth certificates.
Will I have to dance en pointe? +
No — pointe work is entirely optional, sits years down the road, and only ever happens with sufficient training and a teacher's say-so. Beginner and improver classes stay safely in soft shoes.
Do men come to ballet classes in Birmingham? +
Yes, and they are very welcome. Male dancers are central to every professional company — Birmingham Royal Ballet included — and our adult classes are mixed. The technique is identical; only some vocabulary differs later on.
Is this connected to Birmingham Royal Ballet? +
No — Birmingham Royal Ballet is the professional company resident at the Hippodrome, and we are a recreational class network. We simply think learning ballet is better in a city where you can watch it done at the highest level.
Is ballet a good workout? +
Quietly, yes. It builds deep core strength, calf and foot power, flexibility and balance, all at low impact — which is why athletes and physiotherapists keep borrowing from it. You will feel muscles you had forgotten about.
