Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Groove Foundations

Bounces and rocks over classic boom bap to settle everyone into the pocket — hip-hop lives in the groove before it lives in any move.

10–25 mins

Party Dance of the Week

One social dance from hip-hop history each session — think the Running Man, the Smurf or the Bart Simpson — learned properly, with the story of where it came from.

25–40 mins

Choreography Block

A set piece built on the week's grooves and party dance, taught count by count and then pushed up to full music speed.

40–50 mins

Flavour and Musicality

The same choreography, made personal — playing with levels, texture and timing so eight people dancing the same counts look like eight different dancers.

50–60 mins

Full Runs and Stretch

Two or three full-energy runs of the routine in small groups, big cheers included, then a guided stretch to finish.

About Hip-Hop Classes in Birmingham

Our hip-hop classes in Birmingham deal in the real thing: grooves, party dances and choreography rooted in hip-hop culture, not a vague catch-all. If you want the full umbrella of locking, popping and breaking, that is our street dance class — this one goes deep on hip-hop itself, from block-party foundations to the choreography styles filling timelines today.

Sessions run at partner studios in Digbeth and Southside — we confirm the exact address when you book. The Midlands has a serious hip-hop scene and Digbeth is its creative heart, so you are learning the culture in the corner of Birmingham that lives it. New Street, Moor Street and the Metro all land you within a short walk of class.

Beginners are the point here, not a problem — every move is broken down from zero. Adults train together from 17 to 75, with separate teen and junior groups taught by DBS-checked teachers. Your first session costs £8 with nothing to sign, so finding out whether hip-hop is your thing costs less than the takeaway you will earn afterwards.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Birmingham?

Culture, Not Just Counts

Every routine comes with its context — which era it belongs to, which dances fed it — so you leave knowing hip-hop, not just copying it.

Party Dances You Can Use

The Running Man and its cousins work at weddings, birthdays and kitchen discos — vocabulary you will actually pull out in the wild.

Juniors and Teens Welcome

Dedicated younger groups with DBS-checked teachers — hip-hop is consistently the class Birmingham parents ask us about first.

Digbeth Energy

Class in Birmingham's creative quarter, surrounded by the street art and warehouse venues that give the city's scene its flavour.

Your Hip-Hop Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

Find the Pocket

Getting Started

Bounce, rock and your first party dances — the goal is feeling the beat in your body rather than chasing perfect shapes.

What to Wear

Loose, comfortable layers and flat trainers. Hip-hop rewards personal style, but comfort wins the first month.

Month 2–3

Vocabulary Builds

Social Dances

A growing catalogue of party dances from four decades of hip-hop, plus sharper grooves and cleaner transitions between them.

First Choreography

Longer routines that string your vocabulary together — you stop thinking in single moves and start thinking in phrases.

Month 4–6

Style Emerges

Musicality

Riding different layers of a track — drums, bass, vocal — so your dancing starts to interpret music instead of just keeping time.

Confidence

Small-group runs and freestyle exercises make performing in front of the class feel normal, then genuinely fun.

Month 6+

Your Signature

Advanced Work

Faster teaches, tougher choreography and the personal flavour that makes a routine look like yours alone.

What Comes Next

The Midlands' jams and events, choreography intensives, or crossing into our street dance and commercial classes to widen the toolkit.

Hip-Hop in Birmingham FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Where in Birmingham do the hip-hop classes take place? +

At partner studios in Digbeth and Southside, both a short walk from New Street, Moor Street and Metro stops. We confirm the exact studio address when you book your place.

How much is a hip-hop class in Birmingham? +

£8 for a drop-in session — pay as you go, with no membership or joining fee. Discounted blocks follow once your nearest studio's regular slot is confirmed.

I have never danced before — can I still come? +

Yes, and you will be in good company. Starter sessions are built for absolute beginners: everything begins with the groove, and every move is broken down from zero.

What should I wear for hip-hop? +

Clothes you can move and sweat in — joggers and a tee are perfect — plus flat-soled trainers. Bring water; the choreography block earns it.

How is this different from your street dance class in Birmingham? +

Street dance is the umbrella covering locking, popping, breaking and house. This class is hip-hop specifically — its grooves, party dances and choreography — studied in depth rather than sampled.

What music will we dance to? +

Everything from golden-era boom bap to current chart hip-hop, matched to the week's material. Old-school weeks and new-school weeks both come around regularly.

Do you run hip-hop classes for kids in Birmingham? +

Yes — junior groups for ages 6–8 and 9–14 and a teen class for 15–16s, all taught by DBS-checked teachers. Choose the age group on the enquiry form.

Is hip-hop a good workout? +

A sneaky one. An hour of grooves and choreography is solid cardio with plenty of leg work, but the music does such a good job of distracting you that it rarely feels like exercise.

Will I have to freestyle? +

Not until you want to. We build up to freestyle through guided exercises with set vocabulary, so by the time the circle happens you already have plenty to say in it.
