Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Bounce In

Rocks, bounces and grooves to warm up — the common ground under every street style, and the quickest route to getting a nervous room moving and grinning.

10–25 mins

Style Focus

One pillar per week — locking, popping, breaking or house — taught from its foundations, so over a month you tour the whole family rather than skimming it.

25–40 mins

Choreo Block

The week's foundations built into a routine — funk for locking weeks, breaks for breaking weeks — stacked eight counts at a time until the room moves as one.

40–50 mins

Freestyle Drills

Structured improvisation games that make freestyling learnable instead of terrifying — small constraints, big discoveries, zero judgement.

50–60 mins

The Circle

An open cypher for anyone who wants it — always optional, always loudly supported — then a stretch and cool-down before you head back out into Digbeth.

About Street Dance Classes in Birmingham

Street dance classes in Birmingham are based where the city's street culture actually lives: Digbeth, the creative quarter where graffiti covers the viaducts and warehouses became venues long before it was fashionable. Our partner studios sit on that side of the centre — exact addresses confirmed at booking — and the setting suits the syllabus.

The Midlands street scene is strong and Birmingham is its capital, so classes teach the real foundations — locking, popping, house and breaking — on rotation, rather than a vague fitness-class approximation of them. Kids, teens and adults each get their own sessions, and complete beginners start with the groove, which nobody is born with and everybody can learn.

Getting to class is easy: Digbeth sits a short walk from New Street, Moor Street practically borders the quarter, and the Clean Air Zone is one more argument for arriving by train. Turn up in comfortable trainers; leave with a wobbly two-step, a louder playlist and the beginnings of a new obsession.

Why Choose Street Dance in Birmingham?

Digbeth Is the Classroom

Learning street styles in Birmingham's creative quarter, surrounded by the street art and warehouse venues the culture grew up with, beats any mirrored gym studio.

Tour the Foundations

The four pillars — locking, popping, house and breaking — take turns week by week, so you find the style that fits before committing to one lane.

Sessions for Every Age

Kids, teens and adults each have separate sessions, so nine-year-olds and forty-somethings both get a room pitched exactly at them.

A Scene, Not Just a Class

The Midlands has jams, battles and crews of its own — once you feel ready to watch or enter, your teachers know the calendar.

Your Street Dance Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

Get the Groove

Getting Started

Bounce, rock and your first locking and top-rock basics. The win this month is moving on beat without thinking about it — everything else stacks on top.

What to Wear

Loose, comfortable layers and cushioned flat trainers. Street dance has no dress code beyond that — though Digbeth will quietly upgrade your style anyway.

Month 2–3

Pick Your Poison

Deeper Foundations

Popping hits, house footwork, breaking floorwork — each style asks something different of your body, and by now one of them is whispering your name.

First Freestyle

The improvisation drills pay off: eight counts of your own movement, invented live. Everybody's first attempt is awkward; nobody's second one is quite as awkward.

Month 4–6

Your Flavour

An Identity Emerges

Freestyles stretch longer, the choreography gets harder, and you build the habit of blending styles into something recognisably yours — originality is the whole currency of this culture.

Into the Cypher

The circle stops being scary and starts being the best part of the week. Optional forever; irresistible eventually.

Month 6+

Repping Birmingham

Advanced Practice

Battle-ready freestyle, a style specialism if you want one, and combinations of your own construction — dancing that could only have come from you.

What Comes Next

Midlands jams and battles, competitions of our own, or helping the next intake of beginners find their bounce — the culture runs on exactly that.

Street Dance in Birmingham FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Where in Birmingham do street dance classes happen? +

On the Digbeth side of the city centre — the creative quarter — at partner studios whose exact addresses are confirmed after you register. Moor Street station is on the doorstep and New Street is roughly a ten-minute walk.

What do street dance classes in Birmingham cost? +

£8 a session, drop-in, nothing to sign. Block discounts get added once the regular weekly slot for your studio is confirmed — until then, pay as you dance.

I have never danced — is street dance a bad place to start? +

It is one of the best places to start. The groove comes before any technique, beginners outnumber everyone else in the starter sessions, and this culture celebrates effort loudly — first attempts get cheered here, not graded.

What do I wear to street dance? +

Flat, cushioned trainers and clothes built for moving and sweating — joggers and a tee is the uniform that isn't one. If breaking is on the week's menu, long sleeves save your forearms during floorwork.

How is this different from your hip-hop classes in Birmingham? +

These classes treat street dance as the umbrella it is, rotating through the locking, popping, house and breaking foundations. The hip-hop sessions concentrate on hip-hop's own party moves, grooves and set choreography. Take both and compare; many people do.

Do the classes cover breaking? +

Yes — footwork, top rock, freezes and safe floorwork basics all come around in the rotation. If breaking becomes your thing, the Midlands has a real breaking community to grow into, and we will make the introductions.

Are there street dance classes for kids in Birmingham? +

Yes — it is our most requested children's style. Age-banded groups for 6–8s, 9–14s and teens run with DBS-checked instructors; choose the age range when you enquire and we'll match you to the right session.

Can you bring street dance to my school or venue? +

We can — birthday parties, school workshops and youth sessions travel across Birmingham and the wider West Midlands, from Solihull and Sutton Coldfield out to the Black Country. Mention your venue and dates on the form.

Is freestyling compulsory? +

Never compulsory, always available. The freestyle drills are structured so nobody gets thrown in cold, and the end-of-class circle is strictly opt-in — though give it two months and you will probably be volunteering.
