Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Full-Throttle Warm-Up

A warm-up with a film track already blaring — shoulders, hips and wrists all switched on, because Bollywood will be asking each of them for something before the first sixty seconds are up.

10–25 mins

Hands, Feet, Expression

We take apart the raw materials — the classical hand shapes, the Punjabi footwork, and the eyes-and-eyebrows storytelling that shoulders half of any Bollywood routine's meaning.

25–40 mins

Building the Number

The week's choreography goes on in short chunks over a genuine song, every chunk drilled until it lodges — trimmed, bold and ready for a stage in a matter of weeks.

40–50 mins

Formation and Flourish

On come the group shapes and the showstopper ending, and you learn to move as one body and throw the whole thing to a pretend crowd at the back of the hall.

50–60 mins

The Full Thing, Then Down

We tear through the complete routine at top speed a couple of times over, then bring the shoulders and legs back down — the chorus generally catches everyone out right about now.

About Bollywood Classes in Edinburgh

Bollywood pinches from all directions — the poised hand shapes of India's classical dance, the shoulder pop of bhangra, a swagger lifted from hip-hop, and a great sweep of technicolour movie romance — then dials the colour clean past the top. Our Bollywood dance classes in Edinburgh teach genuine routines set to the film soundtracks charting right now, the drama and the faces very much part of the deal. You'll barely clock the exercise under all the fun.

Edinburgh warms to it without effort. It's a young, blended, four-university city that lives for both a proper night out and a stage to command — and while the Fringe, the planet's biggest arts festival, is on, a place to perform is never far away. Bollywood shows its face at student showcases, community nights and every wedding sangeet in between.

You'll find the classes at partner studios in central Edinburgh and out along Leith, the venue dropping into your inbox the moment you book. Some come to polish a sangeet number and just as many for the sheer cardio and the songs — and we carry sangeet sessions out across the Lothians and over the Forth into Fife, from Livingston through to Dunfermline, wherever the relatives are assembling.

Why Choose Bollywood in Edinburgh?

Actual Songs, Actual Numbers

You'll dance to the real deal — the hits climbing the charts today and the sangeet anthems every guest can already hum — not some faceless Bollywood-ish backing loop headed nowhere in particular.

Fun Is the Entire Brief

The style is powered by it — outsized moves, faces cranked to full beam, and a soundtrack that won't sit still for a second. No one has ever slipped out of this class quietly.

Sangeet, Sorted

Pulling a routine together for a wedding or sangeet? Fire us the song and the date, and a blend of group and private sessions right across the Lothians and into Fife will have the whole family drilled and grinning.

£8 a Session

Eight pounds a class, stated plainly here — turn up and pay, no membership and no strings. The block rates arrive once the studio has nailed down its weekly evening.

Your Bollywood Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

Straight into a Routine

Off You Go

You'll be dancing a real number by the close of your very first lesson — trimmed down, loud and stage-fit inside a month. Bollywood doesn't bother with a gentle run-in; it leans over and jabs the play button.

What to Wear

Leggings or joggers, a t-shirt you'd happily drench, and trainers with some support underfoot. Top up the water bottle before you come in — no other class of ours drains one so fast.

Month 2–3

The Face Work Lands

Faces Up

The hand shapes and the facial storytelling shift from slightly excruciating to flatly indispensable — in a filmi number, that expression is carrying half the plot.

Fitness Creeps In

A full track stops leaving you winded, and the second chorus that once floored you somewhere near the midpoint loses its sting.

Month 4–6

Widening Out

A Bigger Palette

Fine classical hand shapes one week, pounding bhangra the next, dewy-eyed filmi the week after — the sheer breadth of movement you soak up outstrips what anyone expects on the way in.

Quicker on the Uptake

Snapping up new steps speeds up, and a stretch of counts that used to need laborious drilling turns into one phrase you simply glide through.

Month 6+

On Stage

Where You've Got To

You're carrying longer numbers now, keeping your place in the formations and picking up the small details — the true leap from a shy sway at the back to commanding the front line.

What's Next

Running away with a cousin's sangeet, a spot in a Fringe or student showcase, or plainly an hour a week you wouldn't hand back for anything.

Bollywood in Edinburgh FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Can I take Bollywood on with no dance background at all? +

You'll do far better than merely survive. The choreography lands in small, repeatable pieces that stick, the class shrugs cheerfully at mistakes, and keenness covers whatever's left. On any beginners' night, nearly everyone near you is picking up their first routine as well.

Do I need to be into Bollywood films? +

Not in the least. The teacher explains what each song is about so the expressions make sense, and the steps tell the story regardless. A fair few dancers here come to the films through the class rather than the reverse.

Is Bollywood just bhangra by another name? +

Related, but distinct. Bhangra is a Punjabi folk dance with its signature shoulder bounce, powered by the great dhol drum; Bollywood is film choreography that raids everything nearby, bhangra among it. That folk kick surfaces often, so you'll taste both.

Where in Edinburgh do the Bollywood classes run? +

At partner studios in the city centre and out in Leith, with the venue confirmed by email once you've booked. Waverley, Haymarket and the tram are all within easy reach, so anyone in Edinburgh can get to class without steering a car into the Old Town.

What should I wear along? +

Workout gear you can genuinely throw yourself around in, and supportive trainers — this hour earns a real sweat. Fancy some flair? Sling on a dupatta or anything that jangles for the mood, but the one thing that actually counts is clothing you won't mind soaking.

What does a class cost? +

Eight pounds for each drop-in, shown openly here — you pay as you go, with no membership and nothing to put your name to. The cheaper block rates start once your local studio has fixed a regular weekly evening.

Could you choreograph our wedding sangeet? +

Gladly — it's among the work we most enjoy. Hand us the song and the wedding date and we'll map out a run of group or private sessions at your venue, anywhere across the Lothians and over the Forth into Fife, so the whole party is ready to light up the day.

Which songs will we be dancing to? +

Film playback tracks spanning the decades — golden-age classics through to this year's chart-topping soundtracks. Each routine is matched to its own song, and we're always glad of a request.

Do you teach children's Bollywood classes? +

We do — age-banded classes for children and teens with DBS-checked teachers sit alongside the adult ones. It's a lovely first style for a child: melodic, bursting with energy and impossible to hang back in. Pop your child's age on the enquiry form and we'll place them in the right group.
