Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Setting the Frame
We begin by finding the soft, lifted carriage the whole style rests on, then easing the hips, ribs and shoulders awake. Nothing in raqs sharqi works without that relaxed, tall base, so it comes first.
One Part at a Time
The engine of the class: teaching the hips to move alone, then the ribcage, then the shoulders, each in turn, until any one of them can travel while the others stay put.
Adding Layers
Now the shimmy arrives and the layering begins — a hip drop riding over a walk, a shoulder shiver over a shimmy — and this is the moment the dance suddenly looks like the real thing.
Onto the Rhythm
The pieces gather into a short sequence over Arabic percussion, and you practise catching the drum and letting the music's accents dictate where your body answers.
Loosening Off
We run the sequence more freely, with licence to colour it your own way, then wind down with a slow stretch through the hips and the small of the back.
About Belly Dance Classes in Edinburgh
Strip away the coin belts and belly dance — raqs sharqi, correctly — is a meticulous solo craft made of isolations, drilling the hips, ribcage and shoulders to act independently before knitting them back together on top of the drum. Our belly dance classes in Edinburgh teach exactly that real craft, holding genuine regard for its Egyptian and Turkish lineage and teaching it with a great deal of warmth.
No hour on our schedule carries less self-consciousness. Nobody's age, height or size is remotely the issue — the movement moulds itself to whoever turns up, and you're never once put on show. That relaxed feeling is a natural fit for Edinburgh, and for Stockbridge above all: the green, village-like enclave of independent shops just above the New Town, where community dance has quietly lived for years.
We teach at partner studios in Stockbridge and central Edinburgh, with the exact room sent through once you've signed up. Handily, Edinburgh runs a tram line on top of its dense bus network, and the heart of the city is a short walk from Waverley — so the journey to class is seldom the tricky bit of your night.

Why Choose Belly Dance in Edinburgh?
There's No Wrong Body
Whoever comes through the door is exactly right for this room. Curves count for you, not against you; age simply isn't a factor; and there's no idealised figure pinned to the wall for anyone to be measured against.
Strength You Don't See
Those unhurried shimmies and circles switch on the deep stabilising muscles most workouts sail past — the kind of strength that later reads as poise instead of obvious graft.
The Real Thing, Not the Flyer
What you learn is raqs sharqi taught with care — isolations, layering, authentic Egyptian and Turkish styling — rather than a glittery keep-fit hour that's simply pinched the name.
Eight Pounds to Try
A single drop-in runs to just £8, said plainly and up front. No membership, no term to lock into; the cheaper blocks appear once your closest studio beds in a weekly evening.
Your Belly Dance Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
The First Isolation
Finding It
You work out how to isolate and drive the hips by themselves, then the ribcage — that odd, gratifying sensation of one section moving while everything around it holds dead still.
What to Bring
Leggings or easy trousers with a fitted top, so the teacher can watch the hips and ribs at work. Bare feet or gripped socks do nicely; a jingling scarf is a laugh but never obligatory.
Stacking It Up
Combinations
Single isolations start gluing into shimmies and stacked moves, and the short runs begin to feel like proper dancing rather than a row of exercises.
Hearing the Drum
You tune into the percussion sitting under the tune and pin your accents to it — the point where the whole thing shifts from counting to actually listening.
Your Own Colour
Adding Yourself
Routines lengthen and there's room to stamp your own character on them, along with the elegant arm and hand shapes that frame all the work going on below.
Ease
That first-few-weeks awkwardness has slipped away without your noticing, replaced by a plain enjoyment of how the motion feels from the inside.
A Dancer in Earnest
Where You Are
Comfortable across the whole core vocabulary, able to improvise to a track you've never met before, and moving with genuine, deliberate control.
What's Next
Veil and finger cymbals, richer Egyptian or Turkish styling, or a step toward performing if the stage ever begins whispering your name.
Belly Dance in Edinburgh FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
I haven't got a dancer's figure — will that hold me back? +
Not even slightly. Belly dance honestly fits every size and every age; the movement bends to suit the person rather than demanding the person change, and you're never expected to bare your middle. Turn up precisely as you are — that's the entire ethos of the class.
Can I begin with zero experience? +
Absolutely — that's exactly who it's built for. Everything is broken into little chunks you repeat until they settle, the room never takes itself too seriously, and just about everyone beside you on a first night is discovering their own opening isolation.
What is raqs sharqi, exactly? +
It's the Egyptian classical style that most people are picturing when they say 'belly dance' — a graceful solo form founded on precise isolations of the hips, ribs and shoulders, framed by flowing arms. We teach the authentic technique with its Egyptian and Turkish styling, not a thinned-out copy.
What should I wear? +
Leggings or roomy trousers and a top that fits closely, so the teacher can read the hips and ribcage. Bare feet or non-slip socks work best. A coin or hip scarf gives the shimmies a soundtrack and adds to the fun, though you honestly don't need one on your first visit.
Where do the Edinburgh classes take place? +
At partner studios in Stockbridge and the city centre, with the precise room emailed once you're signed up. Regular buses and the tram tie the centre to Stockbridge and the north of the city, and the middle of town is a gentle walk from Waverley.
How much is it? +
A drop-in is eight pounds, shown openly on this page. There's no membership and no term to commit to; discounted blocks come available the moment your nearest studio settles into a regular weekly evening.
Will it do anything for my core? +
A great deal. Those slow, governed movements recruit the deep abdominal and back muscles ordinary training tends to bypass, which is why regulars so often report better posture and an easier, sturdier lower back inside a couple of months.
Have I left it too late? +
Almost certainly not. We teach adults all the way to 75, and belly dance is renowned for being gentle on the joints while building real core strength and mobility — genuinely one of the kinder things you can do for your body as time goes on.
Is it just for women? +
The rooms are predominantly women, and plenty of people treasure that easy, no-pressure feel, but the art belongs to anyone who wants it. If you'd like to join, flag it on the enquiry form and we'll steer you to the right class.
