Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm Up, Find the Bounce
The hour opens with a moving warm-up that loosens the knees, ankles and chest and settles you onto the rhythm — the bounce and rock that sit under every street style firing from the very first minute.
A Style Each Week
Each session zooms in on a single style — the crisp snap of locking, the freeze of a pop, top rock from breaking, or the quick feet of house — so a month takes you through the entire family.
Build the Routine
The moves from that style get assembled into a brief routine set to funk, house or a hip-hop break, and you run it until it lives in the body instead of being counted out in your head.
No Script
Improv exercises, gently steered, get you moving without a plan at all — and that gap, between marking steps and actually dancing, is exactly what they close.
Cypher and Cool Down
The session ends in a relaxed, optional cypher — a chance to test a move before a supportive room that claps for anything you put out — followed by a proper stretch to finish.
About Street Dance Classes in Edinburgh
Street dance is the umbrella term for the styles that were born in clubs, on pavements and at parties instead of inside studios — popping, locking, breaking, house and more besides. What our street dance classes in Edinburgh do is run through the lot, led by dancers who are out on the city's own scene, letting you sample each strand before you commit to one. There's a place in the room for children, teenagers and adults.
Street dance fits Edinburgh naturally — a young, performance-driven capital that hosts the world's largest arts festival every August, where there's almost always a stage to step onto. Four universities pack the classes with newcomers, and Leith, the reborn waterfront a short tram north, has turned into the city's warehouse-and-studio creative quarter: an obvious fit for dance like this.
You don't need any background at all — everyone kicks off with a groove that takes only minutes to catch. The studios sit around the city centre and out in Leith, each an easy walk or a quick hop on the tram. Turn up in trainers and clothes with room to move.

Why Choose Street Dance in Edinburgh?
Always a Stage
Edinburgh throws the world's biggest arts festival every summer and keeps a stage running somewhere most of the year. You're learning street dance in a city that performs for a living — the audience and the opportunities are already here.
Every Strand, By Turns
Each term hands popping, locking, house and breaking their own turn in the spotlight, so you get a proper go at every branch of street before deciding which one is yours.
Every Age Included
There are age-banded classes from six upward, every one taught by DBS-checked coaches. It's the children's session we book most, and the one where anxious grown-ups settle in just as quickly as the youngsters.
A Big, Young Scene
Between four universities and the endless churn of festival performers, the street scene in Edinburgh stays lively, youthful and easy to step into — there are jams and battles to watch or join whenever you feel like it.
Your Street Dance Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Catching the Bounce
Getting Started
We start on bounce and rock drills, then have a first go at top rock with a touch of locking thrown in. Getting the rhythm and the confidence matters more than tidiness early on — sharp lines can come later.
What to Wear
Trackies or joggers, a t-shirt, and flat trainers with a little give underfoot. Put comfort first — but this is a scene that celebrates individuality, so otherwise dress however feels most like yourself.
Trying the Styles
Foundations
Now you push further into popping, breaking, house and locking, sussing out what each one requires — and, usefully, which of them comes to your body most naturally.
First Freestyle
Guided freestyle work grows the courage to move without any set plan — the gateway ability the entire style quietly depends on.
Your Own Voice
Finding a Voice
Your freestyles stretch out, the choreography gets harder, and you notice the earliest traces of a movement style that reads as unmistakably yours.
Belonging
By this stage the cypher feels like home and you count as one of the crew — street dance turns out to be a community you enter, not simply a slot on the calendar.
Into the Scene
Battle-Ready
At ease in every style, calm when a battle breaks out, and building combinations of your own — the originality this culture prizes more than anything.
What's Next
Edinburgh's jam and battle nights, a shot at our own competitions, or committing fully to whichever style claimed you in the end.
Street Dance in Edinburgh FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Where in Edinburgh are the street dance classes held? +
Sessions are based at partner studios in the city centre and over in Leith — the waterfront creative quarter a tram ride to the north — while the kids' groups reach further across the city. Each is a short walk or a quick tram, and you'll get the precise address as soon as you register.
How much do street dance classes cost in Edinburgh? +
Each session is £8 on a drop-in, no membership and no tie-in — turn up when you like. Block discounts come once your local studio has its weekly schedule confirmed.
Do I need any experience to start? +
Not a bit. Each class begins with the bounce — a groove you'll catch inside a minute or two — and builds up from that. In a starter session, first-timers who've never set foot on a dancefloor are the overwhelming majority.
What ages do you teach? +
The adult class spans 17 to 75. Alongside it there's a teen group for 15 and 16-year-olds, plus two younger bands — 9 to 14 and 6 to 8 — all run by DBS-checked instructors. Tell us your age on the form and we'll place you in the right group.
How is street dance different from your hip-hop classes? +
Street is the wide umbrella here — over a term it rotates through popping, locking, house, breaking and the rest. Our hip-hop class narrows in on hip-hop specifically: its grooves, its party dances and its choreography. A lot of dancers sign up for both and find the two strengthen each other.
What should I wear to street dance? +
Baggy or loose gear you can move big in, and flat trainers with a bit of cushioning. Otherwise the whole scene is built on individual style, so genuinely — turn out however you please.
Will I get to learn breaking? +
Yes. The breaking weeks bring in top rock, footwork, freezes and go-downs, right alongside popping, locking and house. If breaking is the one that hooks you, Edinburgh's jams are the obvious next step, and we'll send you their way.
What makes Edinburgh good for street dance? +
It's a place built to perform. The world's largest arts festival arrives every August, four universities keep the crowd young, and for much of the year there's a stage going somewhere. That instinct to get up and perform is exactly what street dance feeds on.
Do you bring street dance to schools and venues around Edinburgh? +
Absolutely — our mobile team runs assemblies, birthday parties and youth-club sessions all over Edinburgh and the Lothians, reaching Livingston, Musselburgh and across the Forth into Fife. Mention your venue on the form and we'll take care of the rest.
