Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Warm Up & Wake the Middle

A gentle warm-up that mobilises the spine, hips and shoulders and switches on the deep core belly dance leans on. Nothing strenuous — this is about softening up and starting to feel where the movement is going to come from.

10–25 mins

Isolations & Hip Drops

We break the body into parts and learn to move one at a time — a hip drop, a slide, a gentle circle. These clean isolations are the alphabet of belly dance, and finding them is oddly satisfying from the very first go.

25–40 mins

Shimmies & Flowing Arms

In comes the shimmy — that lovely shivering vibration — along with the soft, framing arm lines that make the style look so graceful. We layer them slowly so they feel achievable rather than like patting your head and rubbing your tummy.

40–50 mins

Travelling & Putting It Together

We take the moves off the spot and travel them across the floor, joining a few together into short phrases. This is where the separate pieces start to flow into something that genuinely looks and feels like dancing.

50–60 mins

A Combination to Music

We knit the hour's moves into a flowing little combination set to proper Middle Eastern rhythm, and simply enjoy dancing it. You leave looser, stronger through the middle and usually grinning — it is impossible to shimmy grimly.

About Belly Dance Classes in Newcastle

Belly dance is one of the oldest social dances in the world, rooted in Egypt and across the Middle East, and it is built around isolations — moving the hips, chest and shoulders independently in ways ordinary life never asks of you. It looks exotic and feels wonderful, but at heart it is warm, welcoming and gloriously down to earth, which is exactly why total beginners take to it so happily.

This is a style with no body it turns away. Every age, every shape and every level of fitness genuinely belongs on the floor — the movement is low-impact, easy on the knees and joints, and quietly brilliant for core strength and posture. Most people arrive a little self-conscious and leave standing taller, because belly dance celebrates the body you have rather than asking you to change it.

You will find us in Newcastle's most characterful corners. Our partner studios cluster in Ouseburn — the city's creative valley of artists' studios and makers, just east of the centre — as well as in leafy Jesmond and the city-centre heart near the Monument, each an easy Metro ride or walk from Central Station. It is a friendly, supportive room, and it happens to be a favourite for hen parties and girls' nights too.

Why Choose Belly Dance in Newcastle?

Every Body Belongs

There is no shape, age or fitness level belly dance is not for — it is a style that has always celebrated real bodies rather than a single mould. People arrive nervous and leave taller, because the room is warm and nobody is judged on anything but their enjoyment.

Core Strength, No Impact

Belly dance is quietly excellent exercise — all those isolations and shimmies build genuine core, posture and control — yet it is kind on the knees and joints. It is one of the rare dances that tones you up while feeling more like joy than a workout.

In the Creative Quarter

Learning in Ouseburn, Newcastle's valley of artists' studios and makers, suits belly dance perfectly — an expressive, characterful style in the city's most expressive, characterful district. Jesmond and the central studios round out easy, Metro-friendly options across the city.

A Brilliant Group Day

It makes a joyous hen party or girls' night — sociable, giggly and flattering on everyone, with a routine to show off by the end. If you are booking for a group rather than a weekly class, our belly dance hen party is made for exactly that.

Your Belly Dance Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

Finding the Moves

First Isolations

Hip drops, slides and circles, learned slowly one body part at a time. The joy of the early weeks is discovering you can move in ways you never knew you had in you.

What to Wear

Leggings or comfy joggers and a fitted top so you can see your hips work. A coin or hip scarf makes the movement easier to spot and more fun — we have some to borrow, so nothing to buy first.

Month 2–3

Layering It Up

Shimmies & Arms

The shimmy settles in and the soft, framing arm lines join it, so the movement starts to look as graceful as it feels. Layering two things at once stops being a puzzle.

Growing Control

The isolations get cleaner and more precise, and the deep core strength quietly builds underneath, showing up in steadier posture on and off the floor.

Month 4–6

Dancing With Flow

Travelling Steps

The moves come off the spot and travel, joining into flowing phrases that carry across the floor rather than staying rooted in one place.

Musicality

Hearing the drum and the melody in Middle Eastern music and answering them — a sharp accent on a beat, a slow roll through a phrase — so the dance really talks to the song.

Month 6+

Real Expression

Your Own Style

Comfortable with the vocabulary, you begin colouring the moves with your own feeling and flair, which is where belly dance becomes genuinely yours.

Where Next

Improvers' work, a first play with veil or finger cymbals, or simply a weekly class that keeps you strong, supple and smiling through the year.

Belly Dance in Newcastle FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Where in Newcastle are the belly dance classes? +

At partner studios in Ouseburn — the creative valley just east of the centre — along with leafy Jesmond and the city-centre heart near Grey's Monument. Each is an easy Metro ride or short walk from Central Station, and your exact room is confirmed the moment you book.

Do I need any experience, or a dancer's body, to start? +

Neither. Belly dance genuinely welcomes every age, shape and fitness level, and the beginner class assumes you have never danced. The movement celebrates real bodies rather than a single ideal, and most of the room on any week is starting from complete scratch alongside you.

How much does a belly dance class in Newcastle cost? +

A drop-in is £8, settled on the day with nothing to join and nothing to sign. When your nearest studio lands a regular weekly slot, we bring in discounted blocks for anyone who would rather book a run of classes at a lower rate per session.

What should I wear, and do I need a coin scarf? +

Leggings or comfy joggers and a fitted top are ideal so you can see your hips working, and you dance barefoot or in soft socks. A coin or hip scarf makes the movement easier to spot and more fun, but it is optional — we have some to borrow, so there is nothing to buy first.

Do I need to be flexible or fit to try it? +

Not at all. Belly dance is low-impact and gentle on the joints, and the flexibility and core strength build gradually as you go rather than being asked of you up front. If anything, it is one of the best styles for easing into movement when you are not especially fit.

Is belly dance actually good exercise? +

Yes — deceptively so. All those isolations, shimmies and travelling steps build real core strength, posture and body control, and an hour flies by without ever feeling like a slog. Plenty of people take it up as much for the toning and the good mood as for the dancing itself.

Am I too old for this? +

Almost certainly not. Belly dance is famously ageless and easy on the body, which is exactly why its floors span such a wide range of ages. You work entirely at your own pace, there is no upper limit, and the welcome is the same whether you are twenty or seventy.

Is it only for women? +

The floor is mostly women and it makes a wonderfully supportive, un-self-conscious space, but the class is open to anyone who fancies it. Belly dance has a rich mixed tradition, and the welcome here is warm to everyone — come exactly as you are.

Can we book a belly dance class for a hen party or group? +

Absolutely — it is one of our most popular group bookings, sociable and flattering on everyone with a routine to show off by the end. For a one-off celebration rather than a weekly class, take a look at our belly dance hen party and we will build the session around your group.
