About Bollywood Classes in Southampton
Bollywood dance is the exuberant choreography of Indian cinema — the big group numbers where a whole cast hits every accent in time. It braids three things together: the storytelling hand gestures of classical Indian dance, the earthy bounce of Punjabi bhangra, and current pop choreography. Because it is made for a crowd rather than a soloist, a first-timer can melt straight into the line and enjoy it from the opening minute.
Southampton has its own genuine home for this. Art Asia has run the Southampton Mela for around two decades — a large festival of modern and traditional Asian culture with music, dance, workshops and family activity, staged most recently on 18–19 July — and the organisation also runs learning and participation work through the year. That means our teaching leans on a real, local celebration culture rather than a borrowed hook, and the dancing belongs to the city's own South Asian scene.
You need to bring nothing — no experience, no training, no particular fitness, only a willingness to grin your way through it. That is why it lands so well at a wedding sangeet, a family celebration or a loud, colourful hen do. Our partner studios run from the Cultural Quarter and Guildhall Square across the city, each a short bus or taxi from Southampton Central.

Why Choose Bollywood in Southampton?
Fun Before Technique
Because it is built for a group, a newcomer disappears into the line from minute one — most of your first lesson is moving and grinning, not fretting over getting it exact.
All of You Joins In
Hands that speak, a face that tells the story, feet that spring — a Bollywood routine uses your whole body at once, which is why the hour vanishes.
Tied to the Southampton Mela
With Art Asia's long-running Mela and its year-round participation work, the city has a real South Asian celebration scene, and our teaching draws on it honestly.
A Celebration in Itself
Little beats Bollywood for a sangeet, a festival turn or a hen do — bright, high-energy and impossible to dance with a straight face.
Your Bollywood Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Into the Film
Getting Started
Your first steps, the bhangra bounce and the basic hand shapes, learned to real film music.
What to Wear
Loose, comfortable clothes and trainers you can bounce in; Indian dress is lovely but never expected.
Hands, Face and Feet
Coordinating
Getting the gestures, expression and footwork to happen together rather than one at a time.
The Bounce
The bhangra energy stops being tiring and starts being the best part of the hour.
A Whole Number
Full Routines
Learning a complete film-style number from start to finish, the way it would be staged.
Performance
Playing it outward — the big smile and clear gestures that make Bollywood read across a room.
Selling the Song
Polishing
Sharper accents, cleaner formations and the confidence to lead the front row.
What Comes Next
A sangeet, a Mela-season performance, or simply a weekly hour that is impossible to leave in a bad mood.
Bollywood in Southampton FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Whereabouts in Southampton are the Bollywood classes? +
At partner studios around the Cultural Quarter and Guildhall Square, spreading across the city, each a short bus or taxi from Southampton Central. The exact room is confirmed when you book.
Do I need any dance experience to start Bollywood? +
None whatsoever. The style is built for groups, so beginners blend into the line immediately — you spend the first lesson moving and enjoying it rather than worrying about being perfect.
How much is a Bollywood class in Southampton? +
£8 for a drop-in, per session, no membership or contract. Discounted block bookings follow once a regular weekly slot is set at your nearest studio.
Will we learn a whole film routine or just steps? +
Both, in order. The early weeks teach the building blocks — bhangra bounce, hand gestures, expression — and these stack up over time into a full film-style number you can perform.
What should I wear — do I need Indian dress? +
Just loose, comfortable clothes and trainers you can move in. Traditional dress adds sparkle for a performance or a party but is never needed for a class.
Can you run Bollywood for a wedding sangeet or a festival? +
Yes, that is a favourite booking. We can choreograph a sangeet routine or a festival-season piece for your group and set it to the songs you want; just tell us on the form.
Can we book a private Bollywood class for a hen party? +
Absolutely — it makes a colourful, high-energy hen do. See our Bollywood hen party page or mention your date on the form and we will arrange a private session.
Is a Bollywood class a proper workout? +
It is. The bhangra bounce and non-stop group choreography keep you moving for the whole hour, so it doubles as genuine cardio — you will know you have danced.
Am I too old to give Bollywood a go? +
Not at all. It is danced by all ages at every Mela and family celebration, and our classes welcome the same range — energy and a willingness to smile matter far more than youth.
