Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Flat-Footed Warm-Up

A full warm-up in trainers with real attention on the ankles and feet — the joints that do the work later, so we look after them from the first minute.

10–25 mins

The Walk

Drilling the heels walk on its own: the posture, the hip, the unhurried confidence of it. Get this and the choreography has somewhere to live.

25–40 mins

This Week's Choreography

A fresh piece of sharp, front-on choreography, taught in sections and built up — the part most people came through the door for.

40–50 mins

Sell It

Running the routine with the attitude turned up, learning to project it outward rather than just remember it. Heels rewards full commitment.

50–60 mins

Full Out, Then Down

One last full-energy run with everything you've got, then a careful cool-down for the calves and ankles before you swap the shoes back.

About Heels Classes in Southampton

The name fools people into thinking the class is really about the shoes. It isn't, much. Heels is a style of bold, audience-facing choreography — sharp lines, a strong walk and plenty of attitude — with the raised shoe as the finishing touch. Whether you look good up there comes down to balance and presence, and we build both from scratch, starting flat in trainers.

Heels grew straight out of clubs, stages and music videos — a world that couldn't care less whether you'd ever trained. Southampton is good at a night out, too: the tight run of independent bars and late venues around Bedford Place and Carlton Place, the smarter cocktail-and-dinner stretch along Oxford Street, and the marina bars down at Ocean Village. Take an earlier class and the confidence walks straight out with you.

There's no hurry to get you into a stiletto. We keep the first few weeks in flat trainers while the ankles toughen up for what's coming, and we never set a routine above a height you can comfortably manage. This floor is for anyone over 17 — every level, every gender, no side-eye at the door. Southampton Central is a short walk or bus away, and central car parks are easy outside event nights.

Why Choose Heels in Southampton?

The Walk Is a Skill

Nobody's born gliding across a room in heels. That confident walk is really posture, balance and timing learning to arrive at the same moment — all of it coachable, and you'll feel it improving week on week.

Safety Is the Starting Point

The flat opening weeks, the full warm-ups and the capped routine heights aren't extras bolted on — they're the whole design. You only go up onto a heel once you're steady enough to.

One Mixed Floor

Heels has never belonged to women. Every gender works the same material together, and one look around the room settles any doubt on that score.

The Best Warm-Up for a Night Out

Hardly anything else leaves you walking taller than a heels class does, and that buzz doesn't fade at the door — ideal before a Bedford Place evening.

Your Heels Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1–4

Trainers and the Basics

Starting Out

All flat, all trainers. Posture, the walk, and waking up the ankles for what's ahead. Confidence before altitude.

What to Wear

Leggings or joggers, a top you can sweat in, and trainers to start. Water always; kneepads later, once floorwork appears.

Month 2–3

Adding the Heel

First Steps Raised

Once your ankles are ready, the heel comes on for short stretches — a block heel with a strap is the kind, gentle place to start.

Routines With Height

Choreography that now uses the shoe, still capped at a height you can hold comfortably.

Month 4–6

Commanding the Room

Performance

Longer routines danced fully in heels, with the attitude and projection that make people look up when you move.

Your Style

Finding the way you personally carry the choreography — the swagger that reads as yours and nobody else's.

Month 6+

Running the Whole Thing

Advanced Work

Harder, faster choreography, sharper transitions, and full control of the shoe at speed.

Where Next

Showcases, performance groups, or simply the most confident entrance in any room you walk into.

Heels in Southampton FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I have to wear heels from the very first class? +

No — heels come on later, never on day one. You'll begin in flat trainers and keep them on through the opening weeks while the walk beds in and the ankles build up. The early classes are about standing tall and moving well before any height is involved.

Do I need any dance experience? +

None needed. The large majority of people in our Southampton heels room arrived having never danced, we take every step apart and rebuild it slowly, and nothing gets assumed. Honestly, being able to walk across a room is the only entry requirement.

Is the Southampton heels class only for women? +

Definitely not. All genders train together on identical choreography, and the easy, mixed crowd that shows up each week makes the point on its own. Heels was born in a club-and-stage world that never cared who was dancing, and the class keeps that spirit.

Is it genuinely safe for my ankles? +

It is, provided the teaching is right — and that's the entire reason the class starts flat, warms the ankles before anything else, and never pushes a routine past a height you can manage. Nobody goes up onto the shoe until they're solid on it, so strength always comes before altitude.

Besides shoes, what should I bring? +

On the legs, leggings or joggers — anything you can really move in — plus a top you're happy to sweat in and a bottle of water. Once we get to floorwork, kneepads are worth having, though not for your first visit, and trainers see you through the flat early weeks.

Where in Southampton are the heels classes held? +

Central partner studios in and around the Cultural Quarter, minutes from the Bedford Place nightlife. You'll get the precise venue by email after booking, and it's a short walk or Bluestar bus from Southampton Central.

How much does a heels class in Southampton cost? +

Each drop-in is £8, paid when you get there, with nothing to join and no contract. Once your local studio settles on a fixed weekly evening, buying sessions in a block brings the price down a little.

When the time comes, which heels should I buy? +

Go for a block heel with an ankle strap first — the strap locks your foot in and it's far more forgiving than a brand-new stiletto. A sturdy heeled boot with a strap works too. Avoid anything wobbly or too high, and honestly there's no need to buy a thing until you know you're carrying on.

Can we book a heels session for a Southampton hen do? +

Absolutely — a private heels class makes a brilliant warm-up for a night around Bedford Place. Put your date and headcount on the form and we'll either hold a central studio or bring the whole class out to you.
