Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Set the Frame
The style holds the upper body tall and still over quick, turned-out feet, so we spend the first minutes coaxing the ankles, calves and posture loose before asking for any real step.
Featherlight Feet
On to the soft-shoe basics — the points, hops and small springing travels that seem barely to brush the boards, every one danced high on the toes.
A Touch of Rhythm
Over the weeks the noisy side creeps in: gentle clicks and easy repeated beats you knock out for yourself, introduced slowly so they never overwhelm the footwork.
Piece It Together
The evening's steps get strung into a short passage at genuine reel speed, the trick being to hold steady inside the beat rather than bolt off ahead of the music.
A Few Clean Runs, Then Ease
We finish with several tidy passes at the passage, then stretch out the calves and ankles properly, since they carry the lion's share of the effort.
About Irish Dancing Classes in Southampton
Irish dancing is genuinely established in Southampton. The Southampton University Irish Dance Society keeps it thriving on campus, while schools such as Forrestall and Blair-McCarthy carry it into competition across the region. Both are terrific — yet one is for enrolled students and the others are competitive, which is exactly why our beginner class stands apart as the way in for anybody: any age, any background, nobody already ahead of you.
What you learn is the real thing — first the hushed, gliding soft-shoe of the great stage shows, and only later the pounding hard-shoe rhythm you drive out yourself. We teach from central partner studios and will just as happily bring a class to a hall closer to you — Eastleigh, Chandler's Ford or Romsey — with the room and current times settled once you book.
Shoes are the least of it — flat, soft pumps or even thick grippy socks see you through at first, and proper Irish shoes are an investment for once you know the bug has bitten. Each session costs £8, with nothing to join. The adult floor spans teenagers to the long-retired, while under-18s learn separately in supervised, age-banded groups.

Why Choose Irish Dancing in Southampton?
The Way In for Anyone
No competition medals to gather and no student enrolment needed — where the university society and the local schools have their own paths, this class is built flat-out for adults and children starting at zero.
Glide Now, Stamp Later
You open in the light, floating reels and only meet the loud, hammering hard-shoe work once you are good and ready to make a racket.
Arrive Solo, Always
It is a solo dance, usually performed shoulder to shoulder in a line, so coming alone leaves you neither short of company nor waiting on a partner to show.
Across Hampshire to You
Past the central studios we will set up in a hall on your doorstep — Eastleigh, Chandler's Ford, Romsey and further out through the county.
Your Irish Dancing Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Frame and First Steps
Where It Begins
A tall, still carriage, feet turned out, and the little point-and-lift shapes that quietly hide beneath every reel to come.
On Your Feet
Easy clothes with flat, grippy shoes or thick socks. No outfit, no metal-tipped shoes, nothing to buy at this stage.
The Floating Style
Soft Shoe Flowing
Joining points and travels into short, light phrases that cross the boards without a whisper of sound.
Sitting in the Beat
Setting those phrases to a true reel tempo and learning to nestle inside the timing instead of racing it.
Bringing the Noise
Hard Shoe Arrives
The percussion joins in — clicks, stamps and straightforward drilled beats you produce against the floor yourself.
Time for Real Shoes
The moment reel or hard shoes finally pay their way, because by now you know for sure you are in it to stay.
Truly Dancing
Full Passages
Longer sequences with sharper lines and tighter timing that begin to echo the dancing you watch on a stage.
Beyond the Class
Performance sets if you fancy them, a way into Southampton's Irish community, or a come-to-you class for the people around you.
Irish Dancing in Southampton FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need a partner, or any Irish roots? +
You need neither. Irish dancing is danced solo, side by side in lines, so turning up alone each week still lands you inside a proper group — and there is no heritage test, with most of the room having no Irish connection whatsoever.
How does this differ from the university's Irish Dance Society? +
That society is student-run and members-only, and schools like Forrestall and Blair-McCarthy are aimed at competition. Our class is the open, public route in — for grown-ups and children beginning fresh, with no medals expected and no student status required.
What actually separates soft shoe from hard shoe? +
Soft shoe is the light, bouncing, all-but-silent side — the reels and light jigs. Hard shoe is the loud, rhythmic half, a cousin of tap. Every beginner starts in soft shoe and comes to hard shoe once the groundwork is solid.
Must I buy special shoes before I start? +
Not for a good while. Flat, grippy shoes or thick socks are ample early on. Reel and hard shoes are a purchase for much later, once staying is a certainty, so please do not rush out and buy a pair in advance.
Where in Southampton do the classes take place? +
From central partner studios, with a travel-to-you option to a hall closer to home — Eastleigh, Chandler's Ford, Romsey and beyond. Since hall access varies, your precise room and time are pinned down on booking.
What does an Irish dancing class in Southampton cost? +
£8 a drop-in, no membership and no contract. As soon as a local group lands on a settled weekly slot, we bring in discounted blocks for whoever wants them.
Have I left it too late to begin? +
Not remotely. The adult floor stretches from teenagers to dancers long past retirement, and because the great majority here started as adults, you are the very person the class is designed around.
Could you teach a group out in the county? +
Absolutely — a travel-to-you Irish class works a treat for community groups, celebrations and villages across Hampshire. Add your venue and rough numbers to the form and we will build it around you.
Are there performances or competitions? +
Only if that is what you want. We will put together performance sets for anyone keen, and Southampton's Irish community stages its own events — but many dancers are content simply learning the steps for the pleasure of it.
